SCHOOL of ARTS and SCIENCE DEAN M. P. ETHEREDGE When the doors of the college opened in 1880, there was a chemistry department, and the School of Science was organized in 1911. Chemical En- gineering became a part of the chem- istry department during the thirties and was the only department in four southern states recognized by the American Chemical Society in 1941. The department of geology, with its petroleum geology majors, has the second largest number of students in the School of Arts and Sciences. There are many job opportunities for these graduates as well as for physics ma- jors, with an unlimited field in atomics. The biological sciences are repre- sented by the departments of bacteriol- ogy, botany and zoology, and en- tomology. The discoverer of aureomy- cin was a graduate of this school. In the Liberal Arts division of this school are found the departments of English and mathematics as the two largest, though the history department has the most active graduate program in the state. Mathematics, formerly in the Engineering School, will still serve that school and should soon evolve as a major department in the School of Arts and Sciences. Other social science fields are po- litical science, sociology, philosophy, . ' . 1 r
