Dr. Fred Tom Mitchell, grad- uate of Mississippi State Col- lege, returned to his Alma Ma- ter in 1946 to assume his du- ties and responsibilities as President. He has carried these out with ever-increasing com- petence. Dr. Mitchell lias won the admiration of both Faculty and Students in his sincere hard work for Mississippi State Col- lege. His devotion to his job is deeply appreciated by students of this College. Dr. Fred T. Mitchell 3L PRESIDENT . . . AND HIS MESSAGE . . TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS: The years you have spent at Mississippi State College will be remembered as among the most eventful and momentous years of our history. You young men and young women who are graduating this year have obtained most of your college training during one of the great transitional periods of the world. Rapid changes are taking place in our social, economic, and political lives that challenge students to strive more diligently than ever to prepare themselves to meet the demands of our present-day dynamic society. In reaching the goal of a college degree, many of you have experienced difficulties pe- culiar to this particular period: studies interrupted by service in the armed forces of the Nation in our struggle to maintain the ideal of democracy in the world and our own characteristic freedoms, the return home to a country geared to war but faced with the problem of sudden conversion to peacetime operation, and to a college totally unprepared to receive students in the unprecedented numbers seeking admission— its teaching staff scattered beyond immediate recall by war and industrial necessity, its physical plant badly crippled by wartime shortages, and its housing facilities entirely inadequate for students and staff alike. A heavy investment has been made in you, but the State does not expect its expenditure to be without great returns— to you personally in broader and happier lives, and to society in your greater capacity for trained leadership and fruitful effort. We are fully confident that you will enter the ranks of worthy and informed citizens and workers and that each of you will do the kind of job called for by the times in which we live. Sincerely yours, FRED T. MITCHELL, President
