3 ' u TO THE MEMORY OF . . . ( Sj IFTY-FIVE years ago there came to Mississippi State College a man who was destined to take his place in the hearts of the faculty, the adminis- tration, and the students. As Professor of Chemistry, Dean of the Science School, and Vice-President of the College, he served his alma mater well and willingly, yet modestly. He was a brilliant scientist of international recog- nition, a beloved teacher, an untiring and capable worker, and a man endowed with an understanding of human nature. The following excerpt from the eulogy of Dr. Fred T. Mitchell, president of the college, pays apt tribute to The Grand Old Man of State. He was the one to whom all turned with hope and confidence when grievous problems developed. His uncanny ability to explore, evaluate, and find a solu- tion to perplexing situations was recognized and appreciated by all who had the honor and privilege of working with him. The richness of Dr. Hand ' s contributions to the students for the last 55 years cannot be evaluated. Truly, the candles of his influence have been lighted for a thousand years. They shall be passed from life to life and from generation to generation while the wings of Destiny continue to beat above his silent house of clay. And so it is with proud hearts that we respectfully dedicate this 1949 Reveille to the undying memory of Dr. William Flowers Hand.
