It appears to be just an insignificant dot in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, yet students from India, California, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida have found their ways to this small campus. Over 1600 students were drawn to the MDJC campus during the 1987-88 school year, bringing with them their own customs, accents, and traditions. What is the special attraction that reaches such a diversity of students? Is it the athletic program, the academic opportunities, or the vocational-technical facilities? Is it the small, intimate campus with a down-home atmosphere? You can speculate indefinitely, but the real answer is probably all of the above. MDJC is PEOPLE UNLIMITED. Well, to MDJC students, it means partying at Macon around a fire, shooting pool at the Pool Hall, going to the Firehouse on Thursday nights, study- ing, not studying, going to open dorm, waiting endlessly in the cafeteria line, doing battle with the crickets, having shav- ing cream fights, having water balloon fights, making cur- few, not making curfew, crying on a shoulder, talking it out, pulling through the bad times, understanding, making up . . . going to MDJC and sharing our lives. Whether a student is inter- ested in academic or vocational- technical courses, the curriculum provides the variety necessary to attract students from every walk of life. I i i I I i i I r I I I I I Opportunities 1 1 1 1 1 1 r nlimited Spirit is the activating force inside people that motivates them, excites them, and makes them gung-ho about themselves and the activities that go on around them. At MDJC it means bon- fires, where everyone gets fired up about the upcoming game. MDJC Spirit is cheerleaders standing in 30 degree weather rooting the football players on and trying to get the fans in the stands excited. The Spirit Band performs, the Mascot clowns around, and pep rallies make everyone look forward to the up- coming activities. 1 1 1 1 1 II I I II I I I I I nlimited T Anyone who has ever attended MDJC has left with special memories — some good, some bad. Studying until 2 in the morning, breaking up with a boyfriend girlfriend, a specific party where you met your special someone, a certain song, a familiar cliche — all these make MDJC more than just study and tests. There are the moods, the friends, the competition, the absolute idea of living. The band is under the direction of Mr. Wardell Herring and is made up of 55 members and six different sections. To help boost school spirit, they perform every home game and many out-of-town games. Also they per- form at many Delta cities for Christmas parades. LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! In January, Mississippi Delta Junior College got hit by the Siberian Express snowstorm. It swept through the South and covered it like a big fluffy blanket. Our registration was delayed and the out-of-state students from places that had never seen snow were in an alien environment. Students slipped and slid around campus cursing Mother Nature all the while. Finally, after nearly a week, the snow melted and Moorhead life returned to its former state. The day before the pageant involved practice from the Ambas- sadors, who were to provide the entertain- ment for the Revue, and from the girls who were to be in the pageant. However, these young men knew how to fight back each week, for they did just that game after game. The 1987 Trojan Football Team learned that winning isn ' t everything but wanting to win is. Keeping this in mind, the team kept plugging, working, fighting, and scrapping to come up in the final game with a victory of 23-10 over an excellent East Mississippi Football team. A larger-than-ever crowd of alumni and parents visited the campus and participated in a variety of activities. From homecoming elections to the crowning of Queen Michelle Cleveland, students enjoyed the many organized campus events. The Home- coming Dance featuring the Steve Azar Band gave the students a welcome break from the routine of campus life. The Mississippi Army National Guard pro- vided military helicopters for public dis- play. The game ball was parachuted into the stadium by Robbie McCord, former MDJC student. The Woman ' s inter collegiate basketball team played 23 games dur ing the 1987-1988 season. The 1987-88 MDJC Boy ' s Basketball team started out on the down side by losing three start- ers before the first game. Also, injuries and illness kept two other starters out of commission for five games. Despite these negative factors, the Tro- jans continued to excite avid basketball fans. The team is now trying to improve its outlook for the spring season by working hard and replacing key players. These talent- ed writers were present at the Creative Writ- ing Association workshop at Pearl River Ju- nior College in Poplarville. Too Late To Cry by Tempa Daniels My routine respiratory therapy work was interrupted by a familiar voice shouting over the hospital intercom, Code Blue! Emergency Room! Without a moment ' s hesitation. I leaped down four flights of stairs leading directly to the emergency room. In one hand I grasped tightly a bright red tackle box that held the needed emergency material. Though responding to a code had become a reflex action somehow, this time my heart seemed to beat more rapidly as 1 anticipated the event about to follow. I burst into the emergency room in full sprint and ran to the trauma room where the code was already in pro- gress. Out of my tackle box I jerked an amber bag, placing it over the traumatiz- ed victim ' s nose and mouth. With this miraculous mechanism 1 could manually force needed air into the patient ' s lungs. Somehow, in the unusual chaos 1 managed to concentrate only on the rise and fall of the chest of the patient who was in respiratory distress. For some peculiar reason the nurses who normally were in control seemed suddenly completely out of control. Therefore, when 1 heard a large crash followed by foul language, I did not notice it was my co-worker. Instead, 1 ig- nored the disturbance. My undivided at- tention was centered continually on the rhythmic rise and fall of the traumatized victim ' s chest. Yet, in this particular code I could not help being disturbed by the hysteria around me. Nurses were falling over one another, and a doctor stood motionless in a corner. I kept ask ing myself, What is going on? A hospital staff is supposed to be rational during a code. I was witnessing a panic! Then, for the first time, I glanced down at the frail skeletal figure before ine What looked to be a ninety year old man turned out to be fourteen year old )V Unfortunately. I recfxjni ed the 88 I ' jilfjw eyes whu h weie ncjw expres sionless. I was mortified. I faintly whispered, Oh, Michel, when will your nightmare end? Michel was a hemophiliac, who during a routine blood transfusion had con- tracted an ill-fated virus, AIDS. At the moment of recognition I was startled by a nurse frantically waving sterile gloves in front of my face and frantically shouting. Put these on! Now! Now! I did not ask questions. I did not hesitate. It was too late. The doctor immediate- ly brought the code to an abrupt end and pronounced Michel dead. While tossing the gloves mto the garbage, 1 was hor- rified by my reflection in a metal basin. Blood was splattered all over my lab coat, hands, and shoes. Quickly, I ran toward our department, not knowing what to do. 1 had heard awful stories about the AIDS virus, and now I was standing helpless in our Respiratory Therapy Department covered in an AIDS patient ' s blood. 1 was also upset that the hospital had not prepared us for this tragedy. The hospital knew Michel had AIDS and knew he would die soon, but they had ignored the possibility that the code blue staff would be confronted with the tragedy that had just taken place. We, the code staff, were naive as to what to do for a dying AIDS patient. I was the most naive of all. My co-worker came running into the department in a greater frenzy than even I was feeling. He kept screaming over and over, My God, I cut myself! Oh, my God, do you know what this means? The fear in his voice and the tears in his eyes were a hard slap of reality. I had to get myself together and give him needed support. I now realized that the crash during the code was my co-worker who had cut himself on some utensils on entering the code. The fresh cut was an ideal target for the deadly virus. He could be another ill fated victim just as Mi( hel had been. I can still hear the words of a Wfii ant officer whose name I ' ve forgotten. A little skill, a little decep- tion, a hell of a lot of luck. Still, only God knows how you win sometimes. I couldn ' t see the comparison until two nights ago when the enemy penetrated the regiment between the 2nd and 4th division, and by some miracle, missed the battery by less than two miles, allow- ing us to escape total annilation. Not that it mattered. The seven remaining guns of the 22nd battalion were now the center of the 4th brigade. Second divi- sion ' s front line had orders to cover the retrograde action; it was, at best, a death sentence for us. . . Harrison Castlen Honorable Mention used during the code were burned. We were also approached by lab technicians who requested that blood and urine samples be given in order to run the necessary tests. Serious thoughts assailed me as I left the hospital. The truth of the matter was the hospital acted irresponsibly by not taking the necessary steps to prepare us for Michel. Therefore, the real terror was the hospital staff who worked this par- ticular code might pay a heavy price for a job not-so-well-done. I thought, Every- day, we will be living a nightmare of our own. The tests will not show anything for two years because the virus remains in incubation within the body ' s cells for two years. Without the necessary sterile gloves the odds are not good, especially for my co-worker. Therefore, a hospital manages a cover up, while the real vic- tims ' entire fate rests solely in the hands of time. Billy Tyner Third Place 87 1988 Retrospect Dedication Through the years at Mississippi Delta Ju- nior College, there has been one whose loyal service has been taken for granted much too often. During her 29 years at MDJC, she burned the midnight oil on more than one occasion in an effort to meet the yearbook and the newspaper deadlines. She was not only a devoted instructor, but also a responsible com- munity leader who worked diligently to im- prove the image of Moorhead. All who were associated with her can attest to her spirit of cooperation, no matter what the task. Laney Wooten was a dedicated instructor who was totally devoted to her work. Her in- fluence at Mississippi Delta Junior College will be felt for many years to come. Dr. J.T. Rubber Jackon 1921-1987 WMMii M mm mm M Mississippi Delta Junior College lost one of its staunchest supporters in 1987. W. L. Bubber Jackson, who passed away on the eve of Homecom- ing, was to have received the Alumnus of the Year award at the Alumni meeting on Homecoming Day. Bubber was a permanent fixture at MDJC sporting events, whether sitting in a chair and keeping up with foul balls at baseball games or guarding the main gate at football games. His dedication to MDJC was also evidenced by the number of stu- dents he encouraged to attend junior college. Some will remain at Moorhead another year, while others may begin new lives at universi- ties, new careers, or even new families. Each person has his life to live, and MDJC is just a stepping stone to the rest of the world. By simply being students, we learn how to cooperate with others, how to live with our defeats as well as our accomplishments, and how to adjust to the real world. As each student leaves, he takes with him many memories at MDJC, whether it ' s spending time with friends or studying for a major test. Our staff has worked extremely hard this year to try to catch all the events at Mississippi Delta and transfer them to the pages of the 1987-88 RETROSPECT. We all started out not knowing each other and knowing little about putting together a yearbook. Mrs. Sandra Moore very boldly took over the position of sponsor, not knowing what she was getting into. We all worked long hard hours to meet deadlines while trying to sustain the quality of our yearbook. We tried many new ideas and techniques to bring about diversity throughout. We viewed MDJC as being Unlimited in many different ways; therefore, we tried to express this. Each member of the immediate staff worked independently as well as cooperating with the rest. Glynda Criswell wrote copy until she was all copied out. Carol Ware typed her poor fingers to the bone. William Hamilton and Allen Brooks could hear copy this, copy that, in their sleep. Traci Rush and I threw orders around until we were blue in the face. Mrs. Moore had to put up with all of us. Without all the work and dedication of these people our yearbook would never have been. I would also like to add special thanks to Mr. Joe Wilson and Mr. Lawrence Kenneth for all of their work in the dark room and also Lambs Studio for their special work. Thanks, Guys!
