he imtl ty College Harmon Boggs, dean of instruction, checks schedules at pre-registration. MDJC . . . Where the action is Action may not always bring happi- ness; but there is no happiness without action. Benjamin Disraeli Action is the culmination of inspiration mixed with a lot of motivation, participa- tion and results. Action may begin at home when you are motivated to mow the lawn that Mom has been asking you to do for week. Or the car that Daddy bought to motivate you to do well in school. Planned action is demonstrated through clubs and organizations, sports, music, and the classroom. At MDJC ac- tion is the VICA blood drive and the an- nual fruitsale. It is the full attendance at Vernetta Whittaker the Spectator club meeting, where stu- dents are supporting the transmission of culture and gaining of knowledge. Action is the modeling squad selling mums for homecoming. Students eagerly join clubs that will give them a little extra boost in their chosen field, and then apply them- selves to redeem the time spent. Action is the Delta Spirit perform- ing the half-time show at a football game where the Trojans are putting forth 100 percent for victory. Action is the awe- some show of skill and strength on the court where the girls and guys execute high-performance basketball. Action is even the winning baseball team. And then action is the clicking cameras and electric typewriters of campus journalists who seek to get it all on paper. Spontaneous action includes a group of coed commenting on the physique of a passing football player. Or, the hoots and whistles one hears when the Delta Danc- ers shake to a popular hit. The greatest action, however, is seek- ing the guidance of God in daily lives and making Him the absolute to determine if actions are right or wrong. No matter if the action in planned or spontaneous, MDJC is where it all is. Action in the Classroom by Beth Pritchard Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Danc- ing ... on to Zoology, MDJC ' s class- rooms are full of action. Prompted by a qualified faculty, students soon discover that a wonderful learning experience can be derived from classroom participation. Students realize by getting involved in the classroom, learning is made easier and more enjoyable. Through action and participation, the students develop those vital skills necessary to make the move into the adult world and into the careers for which they are receiving instruction. Action in the classroom reveals those be- fore unseen abilities that are within each student. However, spontaneous action will al- ways be remembered throughout the classrooms such as Miss Wooten ' s exas- peration with Harry Briscoe in Photog- raphy Class, the football player who nev- er brings a book to Mrs. Bennett ' s English Lit. Class, or the wise-guys in Mr. Whittington ' s Physical Science Class. Action in Organizations by Melissa James and Vernetta Whittaker Action is one of the key elements to the success of MDJC organizations. All students who participate in the various clubs willingly work long hours, portray determination, diligence, and a sincere desire to make that organization the best it can be. By participating in VICA, the Specta- tor Club, the modeling squad or the Phi Beta Lambda, the student not only adds his own special creativity to the organi- zation, but he gains valuable knowledge in concentrated areas. For instance, the Spectator club had the opportunity to hear the famous free-lance writer and Mississippi resident, Bern Keating. The VICA club produces quality students who represent MDJC well in the state vocational skills competition. In the famed Delta Spirit, students reached another peak, producing more technical routines and an extraordinary sound. Action is clearly displayed in each or- ganization on campus. Whether he is writing for a publication, practicing for the TJ ' s or being the batboy in the Dia- mond Squad, the MDJC student molds a sound organization, and a sound organi- zation molds a sound person. 8 Chatting Gossipping Waiting Lounging Flirting Such are the actions that go on inside the Horton Science foyer Monday through Friday. Homecoming by Melissa James If there is any one event in which the spirit of MDJC is reflected, it is Home- coming. The entire week preceding the big event in Trojan Stadium on Satur- day, Oct. 5 was a buzz of excitement. The football players worked hard in practice, as did the cheerleaders, Delta Dancers, and the band. The Homecom- ing assembly was one to remember. Five lovely ladies were presented as the 1985 Homecoming Court. The Homecoming dance was also full of lights, cameras, and action. The widely known band Xavion performed for the students. The main attraction however, was the second presentation of the Homecoming court and the announcing of queen Kathy Manning. Clubs and individuals alike were in- volved in preparations for the parade and game. Special events such as Spirit days, the Parchman Band, and the Homecoming bon-fire and picnic added a special delight to the occasion. Homecoming at MDJC more than any other time of the year is a display of planned action to the fullest. Action is everywhere, and no one can escape its penetrating power. I The 1 985 Homecoming Court members are pictured on page 10. They are (from left) Cassandra Barnett, freshman, Greenville; Suzy Ellis, sophomore. Green- wood; Vernctta Whittaker, sophomore. Greenwood; Alicia Peden, freshman, Schlater. 13 15 The Board of Trustees The Action-Makers Headed by Board chairman Jack Harper of Indianola, the MDJC Board meets monthly to discuss campus policies and procedures. Working under public scrutiny of the media and numerous state agencies, the Board has spent hours on budget-cut adjustments, accreditation mandates, and construction plans. They have overseen one of the busiest years in MDJC ' s history. Members of the MDJC Board are Jack E. Harper, Jr., Chairman; Mrs. S.N. Allen, Secretary; Louis Fancher, Glenn E. Norwood, Ben R. Blackley, Robert Oakes, Lonnie Haynes, H.I. Clark, Malcolm Commer, John Darnell, John W. Garrard, H.T. Greer, Herbert Hargett, J.F. Pap Stevens, Sherard Shaw, Dunbar Lee, Robert Brick Mason, Robert W. Steinreide, and Mrs. Thomas Henry Showers. What ' s Happening in Student Life Section Editor: Ted Williams Layouts: James, Barnett, Nelson Photographers: Gantt, Hawkins, Briscoe The pace on campus slows around suppertime, and visitors get the idea that MDJC action is always that laid- back. But those who stay around awhile learn that the pace can get frenzied. Samples of what ' s hap- pening on campus — both in everyday situations and on special occasions — follow. Action Sites Settings for the activities that make up life at MDJC are microcosms of their own. For instance, over on the west side of the campus, traditional classroom lec- ture halls attract folks like David Pearce and Jeff Horn to stimulating lectures in American literature. In Horton Science building, student lab experiments are both dangerous flops and surprising suc- cesses. Students stroll to Stanny Sanders Library to meet friends and sometimes, to study. On the eastern fringe of the campus, the vo-tech building is one big world of its own. The Hands-On training in each separate vocational shop could oc- cupy several photographers full-time. Athletes have their own special cam- pus shelter, too. The pace picks up in their coliseum and field house in mid- afternoon and continues until late night. Action in the campus dorms is almost indescribable. Suffice it to say that male dorm residents will always remember their private versions of the daily routine of watching VCR ' s, drinking, and hav- ing water fights. Females will recall the sessions with All My Children , late-night ID ar- guments with Security, and popcorn — lots and lots of popcorn. Whoever said the learning process had to be boring? Just as the saying goes that life is what you make of it, so is class. The individual himself determines whether or not he will be intimidated by Mrs. Bennett ' s Sears catalog tests in English Literature, or whether or not he will sleep in Mr. Spencer ' s Physical Science class, realizing that he could be faced with a flying eraser or piece of chalk. A class lecture that lasts an hour can feel like an eternity when the weather is beautiful or you know your girlfriend is meeting you for lunch after class. Thank goodness for instructors like Mr. Whittington (Mr. Wizard) and his country twang. Such interesting instructors make what could be just another dull hour, an action-packed, fun-filled adventure. That ' s why students seek means of es- cape from the dorm room other than going to and from supper. Besides the events on campus, many students spend evening hours shooting pool and playing Pac-man at the Pool Hall. The Pool Hall burger has be- come a favorite food to kill evening hun- ger. And every dorm student likes the 39c special on soft drinks at Double Quick. Most of us never will forget $1.29, the cost of the chicken snack pack. When no one is hungry, however, stu- dents are usually found hanging out in the Union, or shooting more pool in the campus gameroom. Whether it is attending a sports event or just sitting out under the sun on one of the many benches, dorm life at MDJC is where the action is. i 6:30 a.m Scnova Hall 26 27 Stunts and Breaking The Rules Students Find Unusual Ways To Entertain Themselves We here at Moorhead have our own type of good ole boy to fight the system. For instance, there ' s Mad Max who hangs from the ceiling at the thunder dome. Furthermore, the girls are not angels all the time. For proof, we offer the picture of the coed breaking the 10-minute rule on the use of phones in the dormitory lobby. Or, the shot of one brave trying to sneak down the hall to his girl friend ' s room, only to find himself apprehended by the dorm resident. I 29 Campus Entertainment Campus Shows Range From Pom-Pom Girls To Classical Guitarist I 31 Guys Work On Cars at All Hours Transportation Is Prevalent On Campus Commuting students realize that there are various types of transporta- tion open to them. The types they use vary from the school bus to a Mercedes Benz. Car Pooling requires constant schedule-juggling. Com- muters find adequate campus parking — unless they happen to be running late to class. Then, the handicapped zone becomes very attractive. Having a car on campus helps the dorm resident ' s social life. But the dormitory folks make most use of transportation as TGIF arrives. Heading home for the weekend. Collections arc lucrative from traffic fines. 32 Johnny packing for home. Waiting for the afternoon bus. The action begins when excited coeds receive their bids to enter the Miss Mississippi preliminary. Those who summon up their courage spend weeks scurrying about looking for the right dress for the interview and the right dress for the evening gown competition. All of them fret over their talent selection. Fine Arts faculty, under the direction of Joe Abrams, work on script cards, theme ideas, stage lighting and directions, music, and individual talent coaching. It all comes together on pageant night as the crowd gathers. The guys come to ogle Miss Mississippi, who is the mistress of ceremonies. Proud parents come to cheer their daughters on, and the rest of the crowd settles in to watch the artistry of the fine arts department unfold. Suzy Ellis gracefully walks in swimsuit competi- tion. 35 Return to a Classic Trojan Homecoming Kathy Manning crowned Homecoming queen Many special activities were planned for the Trojan Homecoming week, Monday, Sept. 30 to Oct. 5. Everyone, including campus organizations, SGA, the Women ' s dorm council, and the cheerleaders, worked extra hard to make Homecoming super special. The dorm council planned a dress code for each day of Homecoming week, decorated the coliseum for the dance, and made special seating arrangements for the Homecoming court. The theme for this year ' s Homecoming was A Return to a Classic Trojan Homecoming. The maids representing the 1985 Trojan Homecom- ing court were sophomore Kathy Manning, sophomore Vernetta Whittaker, sophomore Suzy Ellis, freshman Cassandra Barnett, and freshman Alicia Peden. On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Homecoming Assembly was held where the Home- coming court was presented, and the band, the football team, the Delta Dancers, and the cheerleaders were introduced. Tuesday evening the Homecoming dance was held where Kathy Manning was announced as 1985 queen. But faculty-student challenges are only part of the brainstorming that has gone on at faculty sessions this year. The faculty will remember 1985-86 as the year of the latest Southern Association of Schools and Colleges ' evaluation, a project to which they have devoted many hours. The SGA (Student Government Association), is an organization designed to help communication among students and faculty. It gives students an opportunity to develop important leadership qualities. The association has worked hard by word-of-mouth and by posting activities to accomplish this. The SGA has planned a variety of activi- ties that have appealed to different types of people. They have been responsible for conducting all student elections, the homecoming assembly, and the presentation of the queen at the game and dance. The association worked with setting up the student food committee to work with Morrison ' s, provided movies for Tuesday night entertainment, staged the Who ' s Who Pageant, presided over the dorm committee, and prepared a Valentine Dance for our students on campus. The SGA plays a very important role in MDJC campus life. 50 I Two Groups Initiate Faculty Professional, Social Actions Faculty Association Officers, 1985-86 Mrs. Jackie Franklin vice president Mr. Jimmy Langley president Mrs. Mary Anne Townes secretary-treasurer 51 Scholars Pass In Review In Coliseum Assembly Program May 1, 1985 I. Blackstone covers MDJC for the Commonwealth. sports Action by Shannon Estes MDJC Sports is where the action is. From intramurals to inter- collegiate sports, from hunting points on a scoreboard to hunting points on a deer head, the Trojans are what ' s happening. The program of intramurals gives action to students and staff who do not participate in intercollegiate events. The crack of bats, the twang of rackets, the squeak of sneakers, the thump of punts, the slap of voUeyballs, and the moans of tug-of-war teams are all heard in Trojan Territory. The football team started the athletic action in intercollegiate competition. Grunts, groans, touchdowns, touchbacks, rushes, runs, and quarterback sacks put the seal on the final game with a victory of 20-13 over Co-Lin, and a final record of five wins, three losses, and one tie. The action of the basketball season was just as exciting. Though the shoes of the Trojan football team were hard to fill, the Trojan basketball team did not despair. The basketball team ' s losses were as hardfought as were their victories. The baseball team, track and field team, and softball team can not be forgotten either. Their sweat and confidence produced an inter- esting spring season. Not only did the track team win the State Championship, but they were also the Region 23 winners. Acting through it all were the loyal spectators who had the spirit. Aug. ' 31 Gulf Coast Cancelled (Hurricane Elena) Sept. 5 Itawamba 14-21 Sept. 14 E. They started the season slow. Hurricane Elena forced cancellation of their opening game with Gulf Coast at Perkinston, so Itawam- ba ' s experience made the difference in the first game that the Trojans actually played in the ' 85 season. But the Trojans quickly gained momentum, won the next two, and then held their own against the very strong teams from the South Half. Perhaps their sweetest victory was the season ' s closest when they defeated Co-Lin at Wesson. Proof of the quality of Trojan play this year is that the Trojans placed 10 players on All-Conference and AU-Star rosters. They are Levon Davis, honorable mention quarterback; Chuck Smith, sec- ond team fullback; Rodney Fulgham, honorable mention place kicker; John Williams, second team tailback; Jeff Hudson, second team defensive tackle; Lee Ford, second team linebacker; Jim Besselman, second team guard; Scott Bell, first team offensive tackle; Elige Davis, honorable mention defensive tackle; and Ellis Townsend, honorable mention linebacker. Vickers. After a previous season with a 6-21 record, expectations were less than exciting. There was only one returnin g starter and incoming freshmen had not been tested in a competitive basketball atmosphere. Most were from small high school programs and no one had been on a champion- ship team. As work began, the coach found no encouraging, dominating fac- tors in the 18 prospects. The coach, team, and the faculty (both of them) according to Vickers, found only discouraging signs. Despite this uncharacteristic Trojan attitude, the team started working, and they worked hard. When the squad had to be cut to 13 on Nov. 4, all 18 prospects were still reporting. With the select 13, the Trojans beat Hinds Junior College on the road 68-64. That first victory was the pivotal point in the season. Vickers point- ed out that they gained confidence and a desire to win. They won nine of their first twelve games. They established themselves as conference contenders. Managers . j Robert Moore Coach John Vickers Late Bulletin: Final record for 1985-86 was 15 wins, 10 losses 74 Trojans drive for two. The Lady Trojans opened their season with 15 freshmen and four returning lettermen. They had high expectations of improving their last season ' s record of 12-13. Lesia Duncan, Diane McCullough, and Virginia Gray — three full-time starters were lost to graduation. Sandra Williams, Elaine Bailey, Mildred Holmes, and Martha McKnight were expected to give good sophomore leadership. As we entered the last week of preparation for our open- ing game, the squad was down to 1 3 players. We had lost six players during the first few months of practice because of their unwillingness to work toward a winning program, said Lady Trojans Coach Buddy Walden. The first half of the seaso n was an up and down season with starters Bailey, Williams, and Holmes playing consistent basketball and freshmen Shelia Jackson and Bessie Banks showing signs of being outstanding college players. The team ' s record was a disappointing ten wins and sixteen losses. This year ' s ball club is the best we have had since girls basketball was brought back to MDJC several years ago, said Walden. The teams have improved each year, and I think the return of nine freshmen from this year ' s squad should make us better next year. Assisting with Trojan basketball as support personnel this year were Dean Travis Thornton, Dr. and Mrs. Allen Snow- den, and Coach Keith Bender. Coach Buddy Walden Manager Diane McCullough 76 I Spring Sports Men ' s Baseball 78 Love of the game keeps team going through rugged season An unseasonably late cold snap left palyers in short-sleeved uniforms shivering as they launched their 37-game schedule Feb. 28 against East Central in Decatur. Season ups and downs continued as veteran coach Jimmy Bellipanni was hospitalized for some of the season, and the players worked with substitute coaches. But MDJC ' s loyal fans such as Rubber Jackson (who also doubled as batboy) continued to follow the team. A traditional highlight of the baseball season for the student body (especially the girls) was the arrival of northern teams such as William Penn, Paducah, Kishawaukee and Lincoln Land on their spring tour south. The Trojans ended their season with a 13-23-1 record. According to Wardell Her- ring, MDJC band director, We want to attract attention to the college as well as the band program. In doing this we want to reflect a family-like atmosphere and make it look as though it is a lot of fun going to the Delta. Herring also believes band camp, held one week before school, really made a difference in the band ' s performance this year. The marching unit marches 94 with the Delta Dancers. Sophomore Karen Tidwell worked with the rifles, and freshman Shar- on Spells worked with the flags. The entire band performed floor shows at various high schools and participated in some Christmas parades in the Delta area. The floor shows were shows of entertain- ment, full of stunts and tricks, geared to high school students. The Deltette troupe is a traditional dance-drill group which was started at MDJC in 1960 and was originally a part of the band. The Delta Dancers are a physical education group designed to keep the Deltettes dancing all year. The independent group of pretty girls perform with the band at football games, parades, and pep ral- lies, and often for civic clubs and various organizations. The Deltettes work out two to three hours each day Monday through Thursday, under the supervision of Dance Director, Mrs. Betty Aden. The girls gain confidence, responsibility, and matu- rity from participating in this organization. Aden proudly commented, My dancers arc dedicated, proud, and responsible young women. The group also included as featured male dancers Tommy Lemonis, Fred Wells, Todd Livingston, Nick Long, Mike Sanders, Bubba Pilgrim, and Bobby Maxey. 89 Delta Herald Editors Vernetta Whittaker I believe you may not be right about that ... Traveling — A Major Part of the Action for Clubs Traveling to press association meetings at Natchez, a trip to the Rushing Winery for lectures on vinicul- ture, and major competition at state Olympics have been featured in club travels this year. The VICA Club and the Mississippi Association of Student Nurses have developed several community outreach projects such as the blood drive for the Missis- sippi Blood Services and the Blood Pressure Screening clinic by the student nurses. Club participation at MDJC is strictly voluntary, but students are provided with participation opportuni- ties in their major areas of study. Those who do join in find the action memorable. VlCA Blood Drive 95 This year the Retrospect editors have chosen to honor a teaching couple, rather than an individual. This teaching team displays a professionalism tempered by a warmth that encourages their students to learn skills, devel- op their individual talents, and to explore the continuing changes in their field. The patience they show their students creat es an atmo- sphere of trust and a good learning environment. Students ask questions openly and freely during class. He is the chief lecturer for class sessions. His course out- line for entering freshmen carries a warning about his corny jokes. His humor, combined with a step-by-step lecture tech- nique, makes a complicated subject easy to comprehend. However, he extends this learning process to a level that prepares students to be competitive in the business world. He is always ready to put down whatever he is doing to help a student who has developed a difficult problem. When this instructor shows him the path through the maze of the master file, the student ' s headache disappears. The lady of this team acts like a superwoman in the class- room and in her home. In class, she takes time to explain every detail. At the same time, she offers constructive criti- cism that sophomores especially value. At home, she runs a household for a family of four, helps her husband with his work as well as her own, and maintains her appearance so that her students admire her fashion-consciousness. Al- though she is small in stature, she stands tall in the eyes of her students. Though he often tells his classes that they may drive him to drink before they graduate, his students know that his is an empty threat because the couple is known for their devotion to their church and for their social work in their community. Although Zapped is his favorite word, students in the classes taught by Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Free know that this couple has devoted many hours during their 24 years of combined service to MDJC to keeping students from being zapped out of rich and satisfying careers in data process- ing. To them, we dedicate the 1986 Retrospect. Mr. Mrs. Jimmy Free 96 97 Jean Abrams Art Joseph Abrams Music Douglas Adams Ind. Serv. The band ' s Cram the Car challenge was on as the yearbook was being closed out for 1986. 191 4 Andrea Scott Closing Comments The time has now come to close. The closing is like a closing chapter at the end of a book, the ending of a very important part of our lives; however, it gives us the opportunity to start a new chapter filled not only with life ' s ups and downs, but also the exciting adven- tures we have yet to encompass. We will always cherish the memories and good times we have had during this year. Old friendships were renewed, and new friendships were made. This year ' s 1985-86 Retrospect staff has combined many new techniques, styles, and ideas. The staff has worked endless hours dur- ing the week to meet deadlines in order to create an annual we hope you will be proud of. Time, money, hard work, and a tremendous amount of patience are all involved in the pro- duction of an annual. Layouts, copy, dead- lines, and photography also play a major role in our production. The entire staff would like to give a special thanks to the following people: Miss Laney Wooten, Retrospect adviser, for her sincere dedication and tremendous help she has given us in preparing the 1986 edition; Mr. Law- rence Kenneth who spent many hours taking pictures for the featured sections of the year- book; Mrs. Jean Abrams who worked with her commercial art students on the cover designs; and Lou Johnson of Paragon Press for her pa- tience in checking our copy and keeping track of our annual. We would like to give special recognition to Andrea Scott, an art major at MDJC, who is responsible for the outstanding art work on the front of the annual. Andrea ' s art design was chosen as this year ' s cover design for the 1986 edition of the annual. Members of this year ' s staff include Perry Nelson, co-editor; Melissa James, co-editor; D ' anah Duthu; Johnny Barrett; and Brenda Shackacl. Photographers were Pally Gantt, Bonnie Hawkins, Ted Williams, Jim Kilchcll, Harry Briscoe, and Shayc Gannaway. {{ssay- isls included Vernella Whillakcr, Beth Pril- chard, and Shannon Kslcs. Wc feci ihis annual is one you can lake pride in and keep as a record of your life here al MDJC. As this closing of the yearbook was being prepared, the Challenger space siiuitle exploded and the flags on our campus were lowered to half-mast in tribute to the seven people who lost their lives in that catastrophe. We were reminded that records of old times, old friends, and old places become dearer when such sudden losses occur. Mr. Lawrence Kenneth 192 Stanny Sanders Library College
