Pride - - - ' The Pride of Mississippi Delta Junior College ' ' Still Life by James Sewell Have you ever met a humble Deltan? We doubt it. We have pride so entrenched in our behavior that we aren ' t even aware of it. In fact, most of us rebel at such an old- fashioned notion when it comes up in our discussions with our elders. We chafe at such admonishiments as ' Tou ought to take pride in what you do, or, ' Tou ' re too proud to do that, we know (top, center) Shaye Rawson analyzing cotton after classes. (Sewell) (middle, left) I ride with pride — my Harley is American made, says Ricky Vaughn. (Sewell) (middle, right) Pride of the Delta (Hutchinson) Ue But it ' s there — underlying every one of our 1,547 individual actions and goals. Why else would we board a bus at Gary, Miss., and ride 120 miles a day round trip to school? Why else would we spend 20 hours a week in class and 30 hours a week work- ing at harvesting soybeans or sacking groceries in the Sunflower store? Why else are our sports teams tradi- tionally labeled the archrivals of other teams? Why else do we play the roles of red- neck, ' good ole boys, and ' ' Southern Belles to the hilt? Pride — that gutsy determination that we can do whatever we have the will, the fortitude, and the courage to attempt underwrites our daily routines. Whether we are from no-stoplight towns like Isola or from the paved streets of Clarksdale, we have a pride based on agrarian values and the Christian heri- tage — and there is none better. This year ' s Retrospect characterizes the pride that Mississippi Delta Junior College exhibits in all phases of activi- ties on its campus. We hope as you pre- view what the book deals with, you will see that we have attempted to reflect that our self-esteem influences every- thing that we do, and we believe that the Deltans are the best people in the world. With a warm smile and a friendly greeting to each of his students, he promptly begins the task of teaching always with ' pride — never failing to show delight and satisfaction in each of his student ' s achievements. He is a man loved and admired by his students. His classes have been like no other math courses any have attended. Students not only have learned from his sub- ject, but have never known a wasted moment in his class. Leadership — With a profound knowledge of his sub- ject and a sincere dedication to his profession, he is a ' born leader. Patience — He has never been observed without it. Understanding — He has always understood. He is definitely known as ' a friend to his students. Witty — He will always be remembered for his witty disposition and his sense of humor which he has dis- played in all his classes to ease the most tense moments when solving any difficult problem. No one will ever forget the day he drew parallel vertical lines on his chalk- board for anyone to climb up, in case he drove anybody up the wall. Another typical incident that occurred in one of his classes was the day when one of his students asked him if he would please go over the problem again. He did just as the student asked; he took his piece of chalk and gracefully began to go over the same problem again by writing on top of the original that was already on the board. A man who teaches with pride; who smiles with en- couragement; who speaks with patience; who enjoys de- veloping the minds of young adults — This man is Mr. Harold Worsham, instructor of Algebra and Trigonom- etry for the past 14 years at MDJC. To him, we dedicate the 1985 edition of the Retrospect. The clubs and organi- zations at MDJC are examples of how students express their love for the Pride of the Delta. By giving their time, talent, and service to the various programs, students are non verbally saying, ' We ' re proud of our school! Each organization has its own special purpose, but all of them have an overall goal: to produce society ' s best. Whether it is the band, publications staff, or Specta- tor Society, the effects of clubs and organizations are visible as stu- dents go on to reach immeasurable heights. It is believed that no student can excel academically without involv- ing him or herself in extra-curricu- lar activities. Student government, business fraternities, modeling squad, agricultural club, vocation- al-technical organizations. Specta- tor Society, journalism and school Organiza tions by Vernetta Whittaker publications, all fine arts organiza- tions, both vocal and instrumental, are all important Vitamin supple- ments to academic nutrition. Phi Beta Lamba is a business fra- ternity open to all interested busi- ness majors. The modeling squad is open to any beautiful coed who wants to be trained in social poise and grace. The modeling squad this year has done several fashion shows, including homecoming and Christmas. Being a part of the Spectator So- ciety means meeting people of dif- ferent lifestyles and backgrounds. This year the Society had the op- portunity to meet and converse with a German refugee and an original balladeer. VICA, the vocational-technical organization, had a busy year with their annual blooddrive, fruit sale, and convention. 1984-85, has been the year of the band. The marching pride of the Mississippi Delta increased 3 times its size over the preceding year. The band made itself known on campus this year by making ap- pearances at pep rallies, home and away games, and parades. The band became a very present orga- nization. This year it took its rightful place on the front seat at all MDJC happenings. Besides the band, the T.J. ' s and chorus have been on tour and in concerts throughout the year. And of course, the publications staff, reports it all with the on-the- scene coverage of anything that happens at MDJC in both The Delta Herald and The Retro- spect. Of course, any large institution is based on smaller organizations and working systems that come togeth- er to create a strong vision. The clubs and organizations at MDJC are among those little things that make MDJC mean a lot. 18 Tools of Organization by Suzanne Tdte 19 The MDJC Agriculture Club The Agriculture Club pro- Ldngley, Farm Management school month in the FMT Lab. motes leadership qualities and Technology instructor. We are best known on cam- pus as the spirit . This is the band ' s best year in the history of the college with its 74 members and six different sections. We as a group have visited schools for floor shows and Delta cities for Christmas pa- rades. During the concert season the band played its most impressive repertoire in years. The Spirit ' s Percussion has six great percussionists that keep the spirit on beat. Their rifles give a spark of military look. The spectator flag shown in distance gives the band line a dazzling show for ev- J eryone to enjoy. First, there was the delay of training a staff of inex- perienced freshmen. Then, the adjustment to setting up the stu- dent directory for the micro- computer, then the almost fatal blow — the late January ice storm followed by the early February blizzard. But the staff, assisted gener- ously by Chuck Lamb and me- dia center director Lawrence Kenneth and adviser Laney Wooten got the 1985 Retro- spect together. Delta District of Mississippi Association of Student Nurses 45 Over the years the MDJC athletic department has set the winning spirit for the entire school. This year was no exception. Through the pain, sweat, frustration, and deter- mination, the MDJC athletes and coaching staff brought us another good year of sports. The spectators and cheerleaders cannot be forgotten, either. Their support gave the competitors that extra boost of confidence which is so badly needed in order to win. They were there through the wins and losses, feeling the ups and downs with the athletes. Their strong school spirit helped the ath- letes achieve their goals. The football team opened up their season with a 27-0 loss to the Gulf Coast Bulldogs. After that, the team suffered through heat, cold, humidity, and insects to become the champions of the North Half, with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses. They are prime examples of the true Trojan Spirit. The basketball team struggled through a hard season, trying to make their season as much fun and as exciting as the football team had done. They found, however, that following in the steps of the Trojan football team was not an easy job. They fought hard to win. The boys had trouble doing so at first. They regained their confidence, though, and improved a great deal later in the season. The girls team played well all year and proved to the oth- er teams that the Lady Trojans are not to be underestimated. The baseball team, the softball team and track and tennis squad boasted of good prospects for the spring 1985 season. They were fin- ishing up pre-season practice as The Retrospect ' s final deadline fell. Collegiate sports isn ' t the only athletic competition here on the Trojan turf. The intramural sports program was designed to give ev- erybody a chance to participate in competitive, and non-competitive games. Intramurals here include badminton, basketball, flag foot- ball, tennis, softball, tug-of-war, and volleyball. The coaching staff could boast on another subject, too. They proudly introduced Keith Bender as the new assistant football coach and spring intramurals director. The whole school body beamed with pride over the victories of the athletic participants. This year MDJC had more football players to go to senior colleges on football scholarships than in the past. This in itself is a victory. Coach Jimmy Bel- lipanni finished over 25 consecu- tive years of coaching baseball and was awarded a plaque by the American Baseball Coaches Asso- ciation for his effort. This is true dedication to the world of sports. This is what the MDJC gridders did at their season-opener, August 30. In the game played on a very unfootball-eeather night here in Moorhead — the mosguitoes and the humidity actually dominated the game — fumbles and two interceptions in the 27-0 loss to the GCJC Bullodgs. The fan turnout was heavy despite temperatures in the low 80 ' s. The hot, muggy night was to blame for diminishing the strength of the Trojans ' defense. That, combined with the mistakes made by the offense, led to the loss. Trojans win first road game — A steady defense performance and an improved offense helped push the Trojans past the Itawamba Indians Sept. 8 at Itawamba Junior College. The accuracy of guarterback Patrick Pope helped steer the Trojans to a 34-7 victory over the Indians. Trojans terrorize Warriors — The Trojan offense dominated the scoring in a game against the East Central Warriors September 13. Quarterback Patrick Pope directed an explosive offense and relied on a stingy defense that put the Trojans over the Warriors by a score of 38- 1 4. Trojans belt Tigers — Heavy celebration was in order following the MDJC win over Coa- homa Junior College September 20, played here at Moorhead. The 42-7 Troian win gave the lead in the North division solely to the Trojans. Before this game, the lead was shared with Coahoma. Bobcats defeat Trojans — A balanced rushing attack and unyielding defense spurred the Jones Bobcats to a 35- 1 5 triumph over the Trojans at a Sept. 28 game in EUisville. Jones Junior College, ranked in the top 20 among junior college football teams in the nation, actually trailed twice m the game. Injuries and penalties seemed to plague the Trojans from the opening moments of the game. Scott Lide, guard, received a knee injury in the first guarter, and Patrick Pope, quarterback, was taken out of the game with a damaged ankle in the second quarter. Trojans triumph over Bullodgs — Some nights it ' s the mistakes that add up to a loss. That ' s what happened to the Holmes Junior College Bulldogs, Oct. 4 when they lost 37-0 to the Trojans. MDJC ' s strong defense and Holmes ' own offensive problems made it a long day for the Bulldogs. Trojans bust Rangers — It was the night of the Trojans. The gaiety of Homecoming cli- maxed Oct. 1 3 when the Trojans faced the Rangers from Northwest. The lively evening ended with the Trojans crushing the Rangers 43-0 in a fabulous show of football power. Even the weather seemed to cooperate in the evening ' s activities. The mild temperatures and clear skies just added the final touches to a somewhat perfect night for the many Trojans fans that turned out to watch the game. The entire evening held a magical, maybe even mystical effect. Lions claw Trojan defense — Mistakes — that was the name of the game Oct. 18 when MDJC hosted the East Mississippi Lions. The Lions shut down the Trojans potent rushing attack, limited their passing and made their way past the generally stingy Trojan defense to deliver Delta a 24- 1 2 loss. Trojans cage the Tigers — Except for two major injuries received by Trojan players, every- thing else was satisfying about MDJC ' s 42-7 victory against the Northeast Tigers. The Oct. 27 game, played at Booneville, assured the Trojans of a winning season as they uped their record to 6-3 and kept their chances for a play-off spot alive. Co-Lin drops Trojans — Mother nature and Copiah-Lincoln ' s big-play offense combined to stymie MDJC, leading to a 7-10 loss Nov. 1 at Wesson. Cats bob Trojans — It was a cool night Nov. 10 in Moorhead, and the wind howled as the Bobcats from Jones County faced the MDJC Trojans in the state playoffs. It was a hard-fought game, but when the final buzzer sounded, it was JCJC that walked away with a 1 0-0 win and the opportunity to play Gulf Coast in the state championship game. For in- stance, there is the 18-year-old sweet ' ' Southern Belle and the good ole boy , both of whom are seeking the mostly mythical land of collegiate partying and sophistica- tion. Then, there is the older stu- dent who is impatient with all that nonsense and whose dominant mo- tivation is the shortest route to a money-making career. And, of course, there are those students who are making a money-making career out of going to college. There is a recurring joke on the MDJC campus, mostly among dor- mitory students. It goes something like this: If you want to have fun, think about going home! Lone- some freshmen identify with this state of mind during the first weeks of school each semester. Administrators work with the deans here to bring activities and fun to campus, but, in view of the differences in lifestyles, nobody is satisfied too often with campus ac- tivities. 1984-85 plans began in August with an opening watermelon cut- tmg. Football and pep rallies soon followed. There was a street dance with a D.J., and campus movies. Halloween came, and costumed dancers showed up for the compe- tition. The lovable cartoon charac- ter, ' Papa Smurf demonstrated his dance step. An intramural tennis tournament was held, overseen by the Dean of Students, an avid tennis buff. At Christmas, doors in the dorm were transformed into sculptures of green and red. So was the campus, as a 15-ft. snowman, a Christmas tree, and Santa Claus appeared. The campus lake sparkled with three lighted Christmas trees. January was brightened by the opening of the Trojan Grill one night a week. As spring approached, students looked forward to baseball season. The Depot, the Moorhead Pool Hall, and Double Quick filled all kinds of voids as students found their places in the MDJC pattern. 68 ' ' Commercial Art Basics Still Life by James Sewell 69 David in 6-hour painting lab David gets up algebra homework between classes A Commercial art major at work Mrs. Jean Abrams is David ' s instructor in commercial art. Perhaps the greatest sources of this feeling are the members of the faculty here. The men and women who strive to educate our students have spent most of their lives preparing to impart knowl- edge. The different backgrounds and experiences of the faculty members become obvious when one realizes that among 96 faculty and adminis- trators there are 35 different col- leges and universities represented. These institutions are located within a 15-state range. Faculty members show great concern for their students and they spend many hours in personal counseling as well as in related church and civic events. The fact that they learn so much about their students and that they show such concern is reason enough for ev- eryone associated with MDJC to take great pride in what the institu- tion has to offer today ' s society. Special items of interest — • Mary Katherine Dunn and Melba Halbrook are retiring. • Evelyn Baskin, Martha Bailey, and Shirley Powell joined the Nursing Science faculty. • Keith Bender is our new coach. • Bob Clark joined the vocational faculty. • Kay Crawford, ADN secretary, gave birth to twin sons. • Ag instructor, Jimmy Langley, elected national counselor for Post- Secondary Ag Clubs of America. The staff worked endless hours either Tuesday nights or during their free periods to meet the annual deadlines. Producing an annual requires a lot of patience, time, money, and especially hard work. Deadlines, layouts, copy, and photographs all play an important part in the production of this year ' s yearbook. Members of this year ' s staff include Melissa James, m.anaging editor; Charlene Clunan, assistant editor; Pat E. Mullen; Willie Leach; Perry Nelson; Harry Briscoe; and Ulyssess Edwards. Photographers include Jimmy Kitchell, Suzanne Tate, James Sewell, and Shaye Rawson. Typists are Verria Bramlett and Barbara Allen. Essayists are Shannon Estes, Vernetta Whittaker, Margaret Sandifer, and Janice Wilson. The entire staff would like to give a special thanks to the following people: Laney Wooten, Retrospect sponsor, for the tremendous help she has given us in prepar- ing the 1985 edition of the annual; Mrs. Jean Abrams who worked with the Commercial Arts students on the cover designs and endsheet; Chuck Lamb of Lamb ' s Photography in Clarksdale who worked with the photography class and shot the feature pictures for the Who ' s- Who Pageant; Lawrence Kenneth who spent many hours in the dark room printing pictures, and who also contributed several candids for the annual; and Lou Johnson of Paragon Press for her patience in checking our copy and keeping track of our annual. This year ' s Retrospect covers every aspect of life involved at MDJC, and we hope this will be an annual you can be proud of. 192 Stanny Sanders Library- Mississippi Delta Community College Moorhead,MS 38761 s
