The 1983 Retrospect Mississippi Delta Junior College Moorhead, Mississippi Vol. 54 SPIRIT Some of us are wondering if we are going to have a pop test in Dr. Pearson ' s class next period. MDJC is an experience. If a person is lucky enough to take part in this experience, he will never forget it — even if he wants to. Attitudes and friendships, activities, and fun vary from individ- ual to individual so that each student is unique in his own lifestyle. Whether he parties or studies, stays in, or drinks with his buddies, gets wild or stays low, is fast or is slow, he still, by giving MDJC a little of himself, adds to the composite. In compiling this book of memories, the staff has tried to capture the spirit, enthusiasm, ideals, and personalities of individual stu- dents. As everyone looks through this book, we hope they find them- selves reflected in these pages. Coordinator: Todd Steffen Artist: Brad Woodcock Copy: Jaymee Vowell 3 Some of us spend more time making memories than others do Dorm students life Wild parties at the Depot and Raby ' s, Going to Macon Lake, Walking the Trestle, Going to the Pool Hall, Snakeing folks, Staying out late, To get Tore Up . 5 A good friend never lets uov down! Fall registration starts decision-making process Jaymee ' s experience: When I graduated from high school, I was going to marry a millionaire, or, go to Yale. As it turned out, I did neither. 1 ended up going to The Head , which was only 20 minutes away from my home. Instead of a mansion, I live in one room with three other girls — no men. The first day of school I remember how I rushed and rushed to be sure that I wouldn ' t be late for registration. When I got there, I waited and waited. All of us freshmen stood in line without saying a word, while the sophomores dressed and ate breakfast in line. Waiting in the administration hallway to get financial aid is all part of the routine. Counselors Ray and Baria worked overtime evaluating Pell Grant applicants. 6 I remember how the cameraman took my picture and then told me to smile. I will never again wait in line for two hours just so they can take my money. Remember that sign in the middle of the hallway that said: Stop, turn around — you are going the wrong way ? You know, that sign actually helped me. Then, they told me to go buy books. I finally found the bookstore, and believe it or not, I stood in line again for them to take my money! ID pix is made fees are paid heading for the bookstore Homecoming — A Tradition We people in the Delta are big on tradi- tions, and the students carry on the tradi- tion of Homecoming every year. The pep rally, the bonfire, the court, the football game, the parade, the decorations, the cele- brations and the excitement are all tradi- tional for the Trojan Homecoming. Home- coming was held on Oct. 2 this year, and everyone started celebrating a week in ad- vance. Edwards-Stonestreet had open dorm ; Stennis-Penrod carried out a Walt Dis- ney theme with decoration. T.J. ' s and Del- tettee alumni were invited back for the oc- casion. Even though we didn ' t win t he football games, our spirit didn ' t die. A school dance was held, featuring Spirit with Pizazz. After the dance many of us drifted over to the Depot to finish our cele- brating, which lasted almost all night. Bonnie Carpenter of Indianola was elect- ed queen. Freshman maids were Belinda Marshall of Greenwood, and Robin West of Drew. Sophomore maids were Stacy Co- lotta of Indianola and Donna Palasini of Leland. 9 Nontraditionalists If it feels good, do it — al- though the expression is trite, it does sum up the mood of many stu- dents. Girls, especially, are making this expression seem typical of lo- cal behavior. For instance, they are taking self-defense courses. They are picking up on the same entertainment as the guys. Some of the girls are proving to be better hunters than the guy s. Age-old male traditions of pool-shooting and beer-drinking are now enjoyed by many members of the female sex. Karate is a serious sport for females. Cheerleaders are into punk rock . Sports car enthusiasm costs thousands. 10 Pool cues in female hands are not uncommon. Innovators All over campus, change is occur- ring. For instance, the girls are asking the guys out, sleep is no longer in style — everyone stays out all night if they want to; some guys are wearing earrings; girls aren ' t the only ones us- ing hairspray and cologne; tennis is more of a participant sport than foot- ball. 12 Vo-tech is learning the difference between a baud and a bid learning to drive an 18-wheeler . . . operating a drill press . . . learning to trouble-shoot an automobile . . . cutting and burning . . . mastering 12 technical and 19 vocational skills 13 m Constantly on the move Everyone is always in a rush here, especially the commut- er. After a late start because the alarm hasn ' t gone off, commuters arrive, only to find the parking lot almost full. Jogging to class from the lot almost calls for a can of mace because the lots are located so far from classroom buildings. By the time the commuter makes it to class, the teacher, following the new tardy rule, won ' t let him in. It takes until lunch to catch one ' s breath from all the running. The line in the Union cafeteria gives the commuter plenty of time to reflect on the morning as he waits to eat. If he gives up, he goes to Mr. Quick and rushes back for the F period. Then, he makes his way back to the car and his parking ticket! ' 11 Unicycles add to dorm fun. Everybody tries to have his own car, and everybody keeps moving, even if it is on a swing. Hall, president of MDJC, is the least recognized person on campus insofar as freshmen are concerned. Perhaps his anonymity results from his schedule of leg- islative conferences, board meetings, and state committee assignments. In addition to his ongoing work with the Legislature in securing funds for junior college support. Dr. Hall speaks to civic groups, and meets with the Board of Trustees every second Thursday of each month. He also meets with the Mississippi Junior College Presidents Association once a month to discuss problems they have encountered. Dr. Hall is currently serving as a member of the follow- ing state and area committees: the National Commission on Governmental Affairs of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, the Legislative Commit- tee of the Mississippi Junior College Association, the Ex- ecutive Committee of Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation, the State Advisory Board on Industrial Training, CETA State Executive Committee by appoint- ment of Gov. William Winter, and the executive commit- tee of Delta-area Boy Scouts of America. He is chairman of the education committee of Delta Council, and chair- man of the state CETA Prime Sponsors Committee. 31 Mrs Boycr (left) and Mrs Kenneth (right) are looking for references. Mr. Cecil Culpepper pauses. ft Mrs. Carley, Mrs. Grubb, Mrs. Snowden, Mrs. Spencer, and Mrs. Franklin are leaving the Homecoming Assembly. Faculty Happenings Many faculty members are involved with projects off campus as well as activities on campus. For instance, Mrs. Jean Abrams was one of 12 Delta artists who created Christmas card designs used by Region VI Mental Health Center as a money-making project. Mrs. Beverly Nobile is vice president of the Moorhead Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Lance Baria is president of the Moorhead Rotary Club. Mr. Sherman Stauffer and Mr. Cecil Culpepper are on the board of Aldermen in Inverness. Mr. Jack Harris serves on the Moor- head town board. Mrs. Rosemary Golden is a local correspon- dent for Linn news in the county newspaper in Indianola. Mr. Alan Nelms served as chairman of the pastor-search committee at the Moorhead Baptist church. Almost every faculty member serves on a civic, church, or club committee in his hometown. Instructors here also do things that are eye-catching. For one thing, when Mrs. Sandra Moore wants someone ' s attention, she says: Hello . . . . When Mrs. Betty Watson wants her French students ' attention, she waves her arms and shouts: Ecoute! Other faculty history of note this year . . . •Mr. Al Loveless and Mrs. Brenda McClellan were mar- ried Dec. 12. •Mrs. Gerry Phillips retired at the end of the first semester. •Mrs. Debby Poe had a baby. •Dr. James Gray returned to full-time coaching after hav- ing undergone valve by-pass surgery last summer. Dr. Snowden takes a short break between classes. 33 Abel — Barry Billie Joe Abel, Belzoni, Gen. Bus. Kimberly E. Abies. Greenwood, Pre-Bac. Nurse Stanley G. Abney, Greenville, Auto Mech. Dragging out of bed and going to class to stare at blank paper and wait for words to flow from the brain, down through the arm, ard onto paper never really worked. The class used tons of paper sheets, wading them up until it looked like the room was one great paper moun- tain. Class members thought up any COMPUTE way they could to remove themselves from the desk. They sharpened pen- cils, stood by the heater, inquired about averages. When that class fi- nally ended, torture awaited students in Horton Science center. A huge jun- gle of x ' s, y ' s, ' s, or the dreaded x 3 ' s hid in Dr. Snowden ' s classroom. Algebraic symbols circled faster and faster until students were so confused the only things they could remember were their names. Tests were even worse. Vo- cational education stresses manipulative skills and trains the stu- dent for a specific job. Four hundred and seven students are in training here this year. Such hands-on train- ing allows students to get good jobs after 9 to 18 months of training. The vocational program at MDJC has an 85% placement record. Diesel mechanics is a typical exam- ple of a vocational program. This 18- month course teaches students to di- agnose, repair, and service diesel units. Trucking firms hire these VOCATIONS graduates. Many catfish farms ser- viced by diesel generators have also offered employment for students in this area. Machine Shop is the vocational course which has attracted the great- est number of students this year with an enrollment of 52. Industries at- tracted to the Sunbelt hire many vo- cational students before they com- plete their training here. Other vocational programs currently of- fered are: automotive machinist, automotive mechanics, basic skills in business, combination welding, cot- ton gin and industrial maintenance, farm mechanics, industrial electric- ity, offset printing, refrigeration and air conditioning , and sheet metal. myu s P ,, « ,, i link ami tin- ontrol lu k optnftl Diesel mechanics repair an engine.sii It moves the luel r.H k to t 85 10 P£M 12 PRINT 13 PRINT 15 FOR X 20 A«0 01 25 LEFT-i 30 RIGHT 33 PRINT 40 NEXT a  .♦•• ♦• ' EXERCISES U CH e - list RubLEM b HOC- THE FOLLOWING L I Ml 103 INPUT NO OF DL i Ml [I 123 FOR  1 Tu N 170 NEXT X END Joseph Chamoun codes in for data processing project. lO 1 J 10 REM CM a. The 48 students in this program learned techniques on the IBM Sys- tem 34 at the same time that they were studying English, economics, and mathematics. All students who completed this program were immediately placed in jobs if they did not elect to go on for two more years of study. In the spring of 1 983, the program was expanded to allow all students enrolled in EDP to TRAINING I become familiar with many different computers. This year, on-campus night classes in microcomputers were offered for the first time. Each class was limited to 30 students. Off-campus classes in microcomputers were in great de- mand, also. Classes were offered in Greenwood and Belzoni. The medical laboratory technology program experienced a particularly good year this year. National accredi- tation for this program was secured, and students who graduated from the program in the spring of 1982 ranked ninth nationally among students from 237 other colleges and universities taking the National Registry exami- nation. 87 — •« ■ i fC4 T4 JUNIOR COIleg K bills. g. When a freshman realizes that the choices he has made have turned out wrong and that there is no one to blame but himself, he gets scared. There are choices to make about new friends. Most of the time the CHOICES freshman has been separated from his group of friends from high school and has to make a whole new circle of friends. There are choices to be made about alcohol and drugs. These choices could have a devastating ef- fect on his whole life. Peer Pressure is relentless. Newly acquired college friends often think that it is cool to drink and get high . Many others have just the opposite opinion. There are also choices to be made about the importance of classes and the time outside of class to be applied to extra- curricular activities. There are choices to make about religion. K Ot Trojans battle hard season Trojans in Action Despite losing 7 games head football coach James Gray said: This was the most memorable team I have ever coached. The Trojans opened the season losing 14-6 to Co-Lin. Sept. 2 the Trojans took the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown which was the Trojans ' only score. After one big play, the Trojans died down. Sept. 9, the next week, the Trojans met arch-rivals Coahoma Jr. College on Trojan Field. The Trojans were up for this particular ballgame because Coahoma and Delta share the same rec ruiting district. Trojans won the game 7- 0, which gave them a lot of confidence going into the next ballgame against Jones Jr. College on Sept. 16. Jones was the number- 1 team in the South Conference. The first score came when quarterback Larma Kirkland threw an 80-yard touchdown to Henry Maxwell. Nevertheless the Trojans came up two points short when Brad Woodcock ' s field goal attempt was blocked in the last 1 0 seconds of the game. The Trojans lost 28- 27. but it was a moral victory to the Trojans and Trojan fans. The next week the Trojans were on such an emotional high because of their showing against Jones Jr. College that they neglected to think about the upcoming ballgame against Ittawamba on Sept. 25. The Trojans got clobbered 27-0 and were knocked out of the playoff picture. Oct. 2. the next week, the Trojans were down on themselves, and the practices were not good; therefore, they lost their Homecoming to Hinds Jr. College 14-0. Hinds scored early in the game and late in the fourth quarter on an intercepted pass thrown by Lamar Kirkland. On Oct. 7 the Trojans traveled to defending champs Holmes Jr. College campus. Holmes ran off 1 2 points the first half; however, the Trojans were determined to win. Late in the third quarter, quarterback Kirkland ran for a 52-yard touchdown and connected with Lee Brackeen late in the fourth quarter to tie the game, with Brad Woodcock kicking the extra point making the score 13-12, a Trojan win. On Oct 1 4 the Northwest Rangers, ranked third in the nation, traveled to Trojan Field expecting a picnic. The Trojans were fired up along with the fans. The Trojans and Rangers traded touchdown after touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. The Trojans were down by 6 points with 1 2 seconds left in the game. Lamar Kirkland threw a pass to Lee Brackeen only to have it intercepted. The Rangers won 13-19. Oct. 23 the Trojans traveled to East Central where the Trojans picked up where they left off the week before, with a lot more excitement. Quarterback Lamar Kirkland completed passes to Kenny Moore, Edmond Donald, and Lee Brackeen for touchdowns, only to come up short 20-22. East Central won. Oct. 28 the Trojans began to play good consistent ball but was coming up short; however, they didn ' t come up short against East Miss. They won 10-7 by a 30-yard field goal by Jimmy Reames. Nov. 4 the Trojans found out they were knocked out of the playoffs, and they lost all of their enthusiasm as evident by their loss of their final game on Trojan Field 35-0 which shocked their fans and left them speechless. Trojans finished the season with a 3-7 record and finished third in the conference. Reames kicks shoeless Practice for the Trojans was very determined and hard work. Each stage of practice was a learning process for the entire team. They learned about the other team ' s offense and defense. Coach James Gray always placed importance on the kicking game because he felt that most games were won and lost by the kicking game. The coaches would make a final analysis of the game plan and explain it to the team during practice, and they worked on it the whole week up to the ballgame. When the ballgame began. Coach Gray began to see if he had made the right game plan during practice. Throughout the season, the team was motivated by their courageous head coach who had returned to coach only two months after having undergone open heart surgery. Pool playing is fun. 94 Students are goofing off. Everybody was busy in the fall of ' 82. Students were busy scouting out their own activities. Student Affairs personnel were busy setting up organized activities to distract students from personal scouting expedi- tions that would be detrimental to themselves, or to the school, or, to both. Student affairs scheduled pep rallies carefully planned and led by the cheerleaders. Open dorms were allowed on designated nights. Guys and gals visited each other ' s rooms to talk, watch television, snack on food pro- vided by the party-organizers. Dances after the games were well attended. Much of the planned activity was centered in the Union. Students played games like Mrs. Pac Man and Centipede and participated in pool tournaments. Intramural sports gave dorm students opportunities to get involved in non-varsity sports. Nothing but the Best , a group of guys from Green- wood, won the overall trophy in football. Baptist Student Union leaders contributed to organized events with such things as noonday, Monday night Bible studies, and special fellow- ships and get togethers. Especially popular were the fifth quarter parties held, obviously, after the football games. BSU center also offered ping-pong and foos-ball . VICA offered campuswide entertainment with its Halloween carni- val. A marriage bureau, a haunted house and a cake walk were traditions carried on at the local carnival. Near the end of the fall season, all clubs and organizations scheduled programs and parties with such frequency that a student could find something to attend everyday . . . and night. But, by then, exams had also been scheduled. 96 (Left) Waiting for photog. (Right) Julia Malone, reporter with CHRISTIAN SCI- ENCE MONITOR, speaks with Vice Pres. Stafford. Married folks, singles, divor- cees, middle-ages, and elderly engage your attention from time to time. All of them, all ages and all races, seem to be pursuing the main goal — making their dreams a reality. They pursue different styles of study as follow their dreams. Some of them study history, zoology, and math. Others, learn drafting and computer skills. Others practice welding and auto mechanics. Endless classes plague everybody as some of us find that we have to put in 18 hours a day studying just to make our grades. Dorm students make the most im- pact in extra-curricular activities. They also probably cause more coun- seling work as they try to adjust to dorm living and to being away from home the first time. Commuters — especially those that gather in the Union to wait for the buses — make as much noise as dorm students as they fortify themselves to face the 20 to 70 mile journey to their homes each day. MDJC features every aspect of col- lege life for the person who is com- pleting his first two years of study and the faculty devotes hours to making the transfer to a senior college or to the career world easier. In pitching, they struck out 154 men and walked 160. Steve Hayes was the leading hitter at .352, and Ernie Burgess was the leading pitcher with 7 wins and one loss. In fielding, the Trojans put out 523 and made 62 errors. The Trojan baseball team practices both fall and winter, usually playing several practice games with Delta State University. The Moorhead Rotary Club, one of the smallest groups in this national organization, has sponsored one of the biggest money- making projects underwritten by a member of Rotary International. By undertaking the pageant for 16 years, Rotarians here have been able to help over 200 students attend junior college. They also have given state publicity to MDJC and to the town of Moorhead by sponsoring the winner of the local pageant to state competition for the Miss Mississippi title. Sponsoring the pageant year after year is no easy task. Advertising has to be sold throughout the eight-county-supporting area of the college, girls have to be selected for participation and assisted in developing suitable talent. Tickets and booklets have to be printed and sold, and judges have to be secured. Moorhead Rotarians and the MDJC Fine Arts department have been cooperating on pageant productions since the first one was staged in the old administration building which has since been torn down. The pageant is currently staged in the MDJC Coliseum. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Abrams of the Fine Arts department have been overseeing the pageant during these 16 years. At Retrospect presstime, they were at work on the 1 6th pageant which was to be staged March 1 0. They were coordinating the effort with Mr. Lance Baria of the Moorhead Rotary Club this year. This year there are 14, all of whom are pictured on g-c. page 1 76 except Leigh Ann Golden, daughter of Mrs. Robert Golden. The MDJC Faculty Association elects officers each spring to serve for the following school year. This year the group elected the three people pictured at the top of this page. One major event of the association this year was the retirement tea given in honor of Mrs. Gerry Phillips who retired at the end of first semester after 18 years of service. Two new faculty members, Mrs. Williams and Mr. Stearns, joined the staff after the year was underway. They are pictured at the lower left. Dedication When one sees the 1983 RETROSPECT, he may ask how so many good memories, hard work, and friendship can be caught under one cov- er. The same thing can be said of Mrs. Betty Aden to whom THE RETROSPECT is proudly dedicated this year. Mrs. Aden has been teaching physical education courses as well as directing dance teams at MDJC for many years. The many extra hours that she gives of her time, her pa- tience with the students, and her undeniable hard work make this dynamic and inex- haustible lady truly worthy of this dedication. It is sometimes hard to find a teacher who seems to care as much about her stu- dents as Mrs. Aden does. But the 16 girls she has coached as Delta Dancers this year are evidence of her interest. These girls have come to love her as a friend as well as respect her as a teacher. Mrs. Aden once said that it was always her dream to grow up and teach at MDJC. As well as fulfilling her own dream, Mrs. Aden is a living inspiration to many students in trying to reach their own dreams. Thank you, Mrs. Aden, for always being there when you were needed. 178 Jfi Graduation 1982 The 192-page 1983 Retrospect has been print- ed by Paragon Publishing Company of Mont- gomery, Ala. Jimmy was named most outstandig student by the class in Publications Workshop because of his contributions. 1983 Retrospect has resulted from many long hours of work by these people v Brad Woodcock ' s artwork is featured in the opening section. Commercial art intern Deronda Millican spent quite a bit of time work- ing on the last 76 pages of the book. 184 Index Name Hometown Abel. Billie Joe Belzoni Abies. Kimberly E.
