Come one J come all Mississippi Delta Junior College is a rela- tively quiet school, but sometimes it becomes circus-crazy. As a freshman in August, I was expecting a nice, quiet school, since it is a small college. Surprised is not as strong a word as I need to describe what I felt when I discovered reality at MDJC. One of my first encounters with the carnival atmosphere was in the cafeteria. Students ea- gerly waited in line to enter the main area, wondering what kinds of surprises were wait- ing for them at the food counter. They remind- ed me of lions waiting for their steaks, pro- vided daily by their keepers. But unlike the lions, students found no steak on their fare. Cafeteria workers seemed like elephants, tak- ing orders while quietly ignoring the smart remarks hurled at them by the audience. Even the girls ' dorm can be compared with the big tent. Everyone sits around there, wait- ing on the next attraction. Talking continu- ously, the residents wait for new fodder to pounce on. Complaints crack like whips from the trainer ' s command, aggravating and an- gering their victims. Noises in the dorm blare out, loud and unexpected. Even early morning noises are a low rumble as the animals slowly shake their heads and get prepared for a hard day ' s work. Classrooms are training arenas. Teachers are the masters, shouting orders. Their moods are totally unpredictable. One never knows when the master may turn to find his cats so riled they bite his head off. ... . essay by Angle Streater 1
