Mississippi Delta Junior College Moorhead, Mississippi PRIDE AT DELTA 6 4 8 Beautiful magnolia blossoms . . . Whether it is in the faces of the modeling squad, a flower edging the sidewalk, the foun- tain bubbling through reflected light in the wee hours of the night, or the cypress knees sculpting this bayou ' s edge, there ' s natural beauty all around us. That beauty is part of our inbred pride that makes us naturally Deltans. We take this heritage for granted, but maybe, this smugness is part of our heritage, too. 10 II VICA ' s pride-75 state and 8 national medals 13 1 SUCCESS! Pride-it is a difficult word to de- fine, but an even more difficult qual- ity to possess. Pride may be that extra something necessary to keep us going when we ' d rather quit. It is that ever present belief in our school, our ath- letic program, our band, and our fel- low classmates. It is that belief that lets us smile at defeat and know that next time, we will do better. Pride is contagious. It is rather like a smile when you possess it, others see it and feel it. 16 Student Directory Section editors: Liz Braswell, Lynell Reynolds, Diana Surney 17 Abbv, Connie Qarksdalc, MS Design Technology Abel, Tana Jane Belzoni, MS Criminal Justice Abies, Debra L. Coaches Downs, Bellipanni, Wright, and (kneeling) Coach Gray. Trojan Pride is perhaps the greatest unifying agent in school. It begins as the crest of a wave and soon envelopes the entire student body. The desire to succeed is alive. Hours of practice and days of anticipation are soon put to the test. Football players huddle together moments before the first kick-off, each willing the other to do his best. The peak grows higher as football players chalk up wins. The peak has to end somewhere-sometime-and it does as defeat hits the Trojans in a 26- ' ' loss against Itawamba followed by a 15-8 Homecoming failure against Northwest Jr. College. Even so, Trojan spirit and pride remain high . Determination grows. The agony of defeat is shortlived as the Mighty Trojans turn their losses into wins by beating their arch rival Holmes Jr. College 13-14. As the season closes, our team is defeated, bringing an end to our thrilling half-time festivities and weekly pep rallies. Still, though, our crest was never broken. The unity created by these activities continues to exist for thc-sc arc memories that lingcr-momcnts to cherish as one remembers. .. MDJC Football ' 79 P.S. Carter Southern Legacy For me as a child moving among those graves, running my curious fingers along those monuments to my past, there was nothing morbid or disturbing in seeing my ancestors laid out in rows according to their generations . . . and there, among the cape jasmines and the crape myrtle, rested those of my forebears who had picked their way through primeval swamp and traveled uncharted miles along undiscovered riv- ers, until they settled these acres in Mississippi . . What is there to do? I ' m bored stiff! Boredom is a dull teacher. Let ' s go do something, I ' m tired of just sitting here. These are fa- miliar quotations expressed by many students on the MDJC cam- pus. B could also represent basket- ball, baseball, boys, and brilliance. Don ' t we all just hate someone that is smart you wear them. A B .. A is for Add-a-bead - necklaces . . . A very important part of stu- dent life is what you wear. Most all of the girls have one add-a- bead , if not more. They can be seen with one or more gold beads ranging from 1mm in size to 7mm. They look great any way (1. to r.) Kim Farrell, Karen Holley, Tina Brown C is for Card playing . . . What is a big past-time game in th dorms at MDJC? You guessed it right-Card playing. Don ' t you wish playing cards could be a course you could take at MDJC? Card playing could also be communicating. Have you ever thought about that.- D is for Down vest . . . Baskin Robbins wouldn ' t be Baskin Robbins without ice cream just like Moorhead wouldn ' t be Moorhead without down vests and jackets. Some boys think they just can ' t go anywhere without their muscle-looking jacket on. I guess they think it helps their looks. All Sports Banquet ' t a fa- vorite pastime, mow tnat cafeteria comes up with things such as egg plant casserole, eggs au gratin, and english peas. Karen HoUey (top) Ricky Milam, Opie Hurst (bottom) Gideons F G . F is for Finals . . . Finals occupy a week at the end of each semester. A stranger to campus could immediately recog- nize this special week by the num- ber of campus beauties who appear in blue jeans, bandanas and glasses. And we all love the teacher who gives a comprehensive exam over three books and 150 pages of notes, which goes to prove that fi- nals arc mainly a test of stamina. G is for Great Guys . . . Great guys arc all around. If you ' ve ever been on the MDJC campus you ' ll know that this statement is true. I don ' t think one could find any greater guys than our guys at MDJC. Thanks guys, for your part in our world. 1 v Martha Willingham H is for Hallways . . . Isn ' t it strange how something can be so crowded one minute and the next minute be so empty. Hallways at MDJC can be put in this category. Don ' t you know it would hurt to be trampled on, have cigarettes stomped out on you and to have things spilled all over you. Think about that the next time you ' re walking down the hallway at school. IT 1 ■ Martin Fox and Steve Tindle I is for Intramurals . . . SWAC, Family Stone, B.S.U., Dalamations, and The War Hawks, these are just a few of the intramural teams sponsored by MDJC. One good thing about in- tramurals is that you don ' t have to be a pro to play, but you can still think you are a real jock. Judo class. J is for Judo . . . Judo is a small word which is often used as a method of physical training. When you and your pal are joshing around, you ' d better watchout. Your friend may throw a little judo on you. Classes taught by Coach Wright have produced championship competition this year. K L K is for Kissing ... Smack! You hear this sound quite of- ten around campus. It makes me sick to see people kissing out in public. Not really, its just jealousy. (1.) Pat Hare and Beth Burton (top.) Yearbook Workshop (bottom) 1979 graduation L is for Library Everyone goes to the library. At least, that ' s what it seems to the diligent stu- dent trying to find a place to study or write his term paper. But, don ' t worry, soon the formerly diligent student will be conversing right along with the best of them. After all what ' s the library for anyway. Steve Shelton Debbie Dunawav M N O M is for Music . . . Music is for everyone. Rock, pop, clas- sic and country, all of our students are listening to it at one time or another. M also stands for money which we all ask for at one time or another from our parents. N is for Nursing . . . See those girls in the blue and white suits. They are nursing students. You better watch out for them because they may want to use you as the next victim of a needle!!! Don ' t you hate to be stuck with needles.- O is for Open Dorm . . . Vanilla ice cream, punch, cookies, nuts, and candies were all a part of the bovs and girls open dorms. It seems that rainy weather was a part of open dorm this year, but it still didn ' t stop the excitement. 159 is for Pretty girls and Poses Q R .. Q is for Quackers . . . Quack, quack, quack!!! This is the sound of the ducks on the lake behind the girls dorm. These ducks seem to be fed better than we are at times; there always seem to be someone feeding the ducks. !!! !!! ! Quarrels always seem to be happening in the dorms. There never seems to be a day that goes by that someone doesn ' t get into some kind of quarrel. (1.) Ducks in the lake (bottom) Kelly Wilson (top) M.D.J.C. student passing the time of day R is for Resting . . . Resting is a seven letter word which means to be quiet or still which nobody does at Ole Moor- head, except maybe in the after- noon. Resting just can ' t be done at MDJC unless you are sick. Why, there are just too many ex- citing things to do at Moorhead. 162 (1. to r.) Ricky Crick, Caroline Majors and Dale Lloyd. S T U S is for Short People ■. . . Have you ever been walkin g around campus and all of a sudden looked up to find there ' s a 6 ' 4 basketball player who looks like he ' ll slap your face in a split sec- ond? So, if you are a little squirt walking around-you ' d better watch yoiir step. • • • T is for Telephone . . . Don ' t you just hate someone who gets 10 phone calls a night? Why should one get that many velephone calls every night? Don ' t you think they should share the calls with those of us that never get any? That might be a good law to add to our handbook, Girls! Deborah Blanks won third place in short stor ' writing. U is for Union . . . Where can you go to see a movie, get a meal, play pool, ping- pong, rap with a friend, or, see Dean Warnock all under the same roof? In the Union, of course. 163 V w V is for Vending Machines . . . I hate machines that are smarter than I am. Calculators are okay, but vending machines are abso- lutely degrading. They ' re alive. They know when I have only one quarter left to my name. That ' s why they always give me a real Dr. Pepper instead of a diet one. (1.) Amy Wooton (t.) Jim Stallings, Beth Burton (b.) Ricky Bdk W is for Windy Days . . There seemed to be a lot of windy days at MDJC. Also there was a lot of rainy days but despite weather factors, we, the students always carried on our daily efforts. Billy Williams, Beth Steed X Y Z X is for Xerox , . . Have you ever thought about what MDJC would be like with- out Xerox machines? Just think of all the handout sheets your teacher gives you; if it weren ' t for Xerox machines, we ' d have to write all of that ourselves. Thank God for Xerox Machines! • • • Y is for Ya ' D . . . When the Yankees finally slip and say ya ' ll instead of you guys , the transformation is com- plete. Like or not, they ' re at least a little bit Mississippian ... In May, it ' s not unusual to walk by a group of Northern accenters and hear things like, Hi, ya ' ll. How are ya ' ll? Where are ya ' ll going? Ya ' ll stop. Ya ' ll go to. Are ya ' ll sure? Arc ya ' ll kidding? Oh ya ' ll! Ya ' ll come back now ya hear! Bye ya ' ll! Sharon Sanders, Debra Shutes Z is for Zoo . . . Rhino ' s, ' Hoss ' , Bird, Jim Al- len, and many others are some of the animals of the zoo at MDJC. Sharon and Debra often climb the walls at MDJC to get away from it all. Stafford has many trophies for his efforts. 1980 Restrospect dedication Dedication of the yearbook is one of the highest honors an MDJC staff member can receive. It is based on service to the school and recog- nition of outstanding contributions to student development. The recipient of this year ' s honor rates out- standing not only in the area of character, but also in leadership. He is willing to help anyone who needs him and will even go a step further to ensure satisfaction. Our recipient has a long record of association with this school. He was an outstanding stu- dent here when he attended in 1940-42, and he has made notable contributions to the progress of this institution during his ten years of staff membership. As a student at MDJC (known then as Sun- flower Junior College), he was a top scholar, an athlete, and a member of the yearbook staff. He has an outstanding record as a profes- sional educator, having devoted 30 years of his life to the Mississippi public school system. He is the prototype of the compassionate Southern gentleman and family man. We are proud to dedicate the 1980 Retro- spect to Vice- Pres. Sam Stafford. A warm and smiling reception cliaracterizes the atmosphere in his office where Mrs. Shirley Pigrim is his secretary.
