4 Retrospect 1979 Mississippi Delta Junior College Moorhead, Mississippi RETROSPECT 1978 An official publication of the students of Mississippi Delta Junior College at Moorhead, Mississippi Anne Williams co-editor Terrell Wells co-editor Robin Rushing Jeanette Knighten Jim Edwards Randy Stokes Contents Gallery 3 Organizations 19 Sports 35 Directory 51 Honors 139 Student Life 145 Closing 176 2 Moorhead is a world all of its own and should be recognized as such. It offers a place to Uve, eat, work, learn and relax. The college years are a transition period for most students. It is a time when we find ourselves sliding out from under the protective wings of our famihes and movmg into the harsh world of business and the making of a living. Although college should prepare students for this working world, it acts as a lingering time of childhood for many. Unprotected by famihes, they cut loose and do all the Hving they possibly can before settling down. College life is different from any other period in a person ' s life, and students take advantage of it. MDJC was the college that offered it all. We could learn anything from welding to accounting to English. It was here that we found that we could choos e our careers, and also those special friends. We could explore our own ideas on life and make our own decisions. It was here that we learned a bit more about ourselves— our who else is more important than you? Fm glad you smiled for me— it made my otherwise ordinary day a holiday —Elizabeth Williams College is more than all study and tests. There are the moods, the friends, the competition, the cheering, the ab- solute idea of living. College is a process many of us go through to help pre- pare us for life. We will make our mistakes, but we will learn something in the long run: even if it is just to be happy. The 1979 Retrospect is dedicated to a man who for years has given unselfishly of his time and talent to the students on our campus. He has helped plan schedules, ar- range financial loans, advise on selecting se- nior colleges and choosing careers. He has taken time to get to know the stu- dents and to take an interest in their activi- ties. On occasion he has been a shoulder to cry on when we needed someone to turn to. The 1979 Retrospect is proudly dedicated to Mr. Joe Ray in deep appreciation for his loyal and never-ending contribution to the student body here. r THE ACTIVE BOARD GOVERNS ADMINISTRATIVE ACTION AND DEFINES PHILOSOPHY Henry Cain Otis Alien Mrs. S N Allen Hugh Arant T.J. As traditional winners, the football, baseball, and basket- ball teams always rate special notice in The Retrospect. Al- though there have been special problems with picture-taking, this year is no exception. We salute the 1978 state baseball champions in this year- book, and we proudly hail the 1978 North Division football winners— the mighty Trojans. MDJC offers training in five locations— Greenville, Cleve- land, Indianola, Greenwood, and Clarksdale. Upon satisfactory completion of the Employment Service test, students must then make accept- able scores on a Pre-Admission Test devised by the National League for Nursing. Then they are screened for admission by a review committee made up of school officials, hospital person- nel, and community repre- sentatives. The program, which requires 12 months of a student ' s time, is a combination of classroom and clinical instruction. Currently, MDJC has 102 stu- dents enrolled in Practical Nurs- ing classes. On the last State Board Test Pool Examination, MDJC students had a 92% pass- ing rate. (Above) Interview Committee: (1. to r.) Her day consists of going to classes, working at the hospital in lab study, and taking care of husband Chuck Lamb and their home. Her day starts early and ends late. She has found, as all student nurses, that the program is 9V2 months of concenrated work which requires dedication and effort.
