Moorhead is small, but we find plenty to do. Everyone goes to the pool hall on Thursday night to party if we don ' t go the Grove or to Greenwood. Sometimes we don ' t go at all. My schedule is perfect. I have no 8:25 classes. I can catch those Z ' s until at least 7:45 each morning. The food is OK. I eat in the cafeteria twice a day and at Mr. Quik about three. Dr. Pepper is getting rich off of me alone. I cut all four classes yesterday so I could go to Jackson to the State Fair. Got in this morning around 9:00. Was real tired. My room is nice. There were four of us in here but one moved out. Finally got the closet to myself. By the way, I ' ll pay my phone bill next month. I ' m still trying to pay last month ' s. Moorhead really isn ' t bad. I think I ' m going to like it. I may even learn something. Love, The College Kid P.S. Please send money!! Ah life! What more could be so re- warding. Each person going in his own direction yet clinging to the persons around him for support. Life IS never complete; it is a con- stant ritual of new beginnings, new faces, and new ideas while clinging to the familiar. 8 We spent our money eating chicken at The Quik and buying Miller Pony ' s. We spent the morning in bed, the after- noon in class, and the nights anywhere we could gather a crowd. We spent some time in the library. We spent our time wishing we had more while every once in a while we wondered what to do with ourselves. We sat in the Union at noon looking at all the girls and counting all the guys we wanted a date with. We pondered all the questions, even life. But through it all, we emerged with a smile. I Got caught in the boy ' s dorm, didn ' t you? Failed your psychology test, and you don ' t have any cuts left in Sociology? Oh well, just go talk to the Dean. By the way, got a quarter I can borrow to wash my clothes? Broke? Me too. The clothes can wait. Let ' s go riding for a while. Go to Greenwood? Ok. We ' ll eat while we ' re there. Let ' s go to Wendy ' s. Got a date this weekend? Have fun. I ' ll be sitting at home, again. Got a better idea for tonight? Go to the pool hall and have a good time and see the crowd?! Great! Let ' s go! I knew this day had to get better! 13 What a way to live. A small town full of simple folks. Located on the edge of town, a small community college full of students from all over. Each one going somewhere, doing something, learning something. Faces peer from everywhere with expressions from won- der to amazement. An everyday town— an ev- eryday college: the big difference, an extraor- dinary people living each day to its fullest. Forget all the crime and violence. We ' re too busy living. Shouting and cheering, laughing and singing, we didn ' t miss a thing. We cap- tured each moment from sitting under the oak trees to the Homecoming pa- rade to the basketball games. We didn ' t stop for anything except to say, Come on! 15 DEDICATION His ten years of service and aid to Mississippi Delta Junior College have for the most part gone unhonored, unnoticed, but for the many hours of unselfish work he has eagerly given to the school, we dedicate this the 1978 edition of the RETROSPECT to Mr. Sherman Stauffer. A good humored, unselfish, and cooperative man, Mr. Stauffer served first as a math instructor then moved to his current position as business manager. For his faithfulness to the students, faculty, and administration-, this RETROSPECT is dedicated to Mr. Stauffer. LPN TRAINING Student practical nurses are being trained by the dozens in college classes set up in Greenville, Greenwood, Clarksdale, Cleve- land, and Indianola. And yet the public demand for licensed practical nurses in the Delta area has not been completely answered. Since the LPN programs were first started in 1968, seven classes averaging 20 students per class have been taught each calendar year. Each LPN student is required to complete 1748 hours of training for completion of the course. Laboratory sessions for LPN classes are taught in Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Northwest Mississippi Medical Center, Delta Medical Center, South Sunflower County Hospital, Bolivar County Hospital, and Kings Daughters Hospital. 20 JEANETTE KNIGHTEN COPIES THOSE EVER PRESENT ALGEBRA PROBLEMS. OCT. 7-LEON SHAPLEY PLEASE COME BY THE STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE AND SIGN YOUR ENROLLMENT CARD. UNIVERSITY PARALLEL Academics is the traditional area of college study. At first pe ople believed that only men needed to be educated and then they needed to learn only reading, writing, and arithmetic. But now we have advanced far beyond this limited theory. All Mr. Joiner ' s history students know that since the Re- naissance and the beginning of higher education, society has taken a continuing step forward toward intellectual achievement. These are your white collar workers, your ex- ecutives, or some might term them— the Professionals. Current educational theory holds that the junior college student should give careful consideration to his interests and apitudes before making a choice of a Ufe ' s work. If he plans to continue his training in a senior college the pro- gram should parallel, as nearly as possible, that of the freshman and sophomore years of the college or university to which he plans to transfer. The Dean and a committee of faculty advisors are available during the periods as- signed for registration to assist students in planning their schedules and program of study. Any of the courses of study outlined under the various curriculars may be al- tered, with the approval of the Dean, to meet the specific needs or requirements of individual students. The curricu- lar offerings of MDJC are designed to provide its students opportunities for definite vocational and cultural preparation. The students and the teachers here have very good rap- port. The teachers are warm and friendly. Vickie Doris Ashley, Minter City. Social Work; Carl E. Bailey, Greenville, Engineering. OCT. 10-LINDA STIGLER ARRIVED ON LATE BUS 15. PARALLEL UNIVERSITY The vocational facet of Education here on campus is unique. Voca- tional students pay the same fees as other students— a tabulation of fees, board, and room rent. But unlike the academic section, these students stay in one class from 8:25 in the morning until 3:40 each afternoon ex- cept on Fridays, when they cut at 2:45. There are fourteen different Vocational programs. They are as follows: (1) Automotive Mechanics, (2) Basic Skills in Busmess, (3) Combination Welding, (4) Cottin Gin Management, (5) Diesel Mechanics, (6) Farm Machinery Mechanics, (7) Industnal Electricity, (8) Machine Shop, (9) Major Electncal Appliance Repair, (10) Offset Printmg, (11) Radio and Television, (12) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, (13) Sheet Metal, and (14) Practical Nursing. Each of these programs is designed with one main purpose in mind-to train the students to get and keep jobs. More people seem to be leaning towards vocational careers. Here on campus tne vocational students have their own complex, and, in the sum- mer of 1977, a new wing was added to accommodate the rapidly growing numbers. The VcKational Center is a very interesting place. Most any day you can go by the Vocational building and see many activities going on from rebuilding an engine to plowing a field. The difference in most of the academic courses and the vocational is that in the academic area each day you go to different classes that are supposed to teach you the major ideas oY contemporary civilization, to make you a well-rounded person; whereas in the Vocational Center, the students actually do the work for which they are being trained, from job pnnting to operation of a wtton gin. Job placement is another interesting feature of the Vocational Center. Each year an attempt is made to place each student on a job. And they have been very successful. For example, Mr. Al Loveless, sheet metal in- structor, said that in the many years that he has been a teacher here he hasn ' t had a student to graduate from his class with good grades that hasn ' t been olTered a job. And even the students whose grades aren ' t that high are often made into useful individuals who are placed on a job. For instance, if a student ' s grades aren ' t at the level to get a managerial posi- tion, he is not cast aside as useless. He is trained for a helper ' s job. A typical day in the Vocational Center might go something like this: At 8.25 a.m. students report to cla.ss and work continuously until about 10:30 when they are given a one-hour break. They are given approximately one hour for lunch from 11:30 to 12:30. Then it ' s back to work until about 3:10 when it is time for cleaning up and putting everything back into place. All the other time is spent working hard with the realization that what they do here will determine what they will be doing the rest of their lives, and that how well they learn will determine how they will live for the rest of their lives. The Parchman Prison Band and DeeDee Cannon performed in the Union after the parade. An outdoor barbeque was held prior to the football game. Although the Trojans lost the game to Holmes Junior College, 10-0, everyone had his spirits boosted at the Home- cx)ming dance held at the Moorhead Armory. The next day all recovered. SPECIAL PEOPLE Congressman David Bowen speaks on campus October 7, 1977. Bowen talks with reporters. MDJC was honored to have several guest speakers visit on cam- pus first semester. Congressman David Bowen spoke to the students on October 7, 1977 in Tharp Audito- rium. He spoke on the facets of government and the problems fac- ing the Mississippi Delta. Thomas Hal PhiUips was the first speaker of the newly formed Ly- ceum series sponsored by the Humanities Council. A novelist, short story writer and screen writer, Mr. Phil- lips has written such novels as The Loved and the Unloved and Kangaroo Hollow. He has helped produce the movies Huckle- berry Finn and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Mr. Phillips is a native of Theo, Mississippi. He spoke on campus on October 30. i m OFF-CAMPUS MDJC is not limited to the cam- pus in Moorhead. Nursing pro- grams are conducted in Greenville, Clarksdale, Greenwood, Cleveland and Indianola. A continuing edu- cation center is located in Green- ville along with vocational training classes. Many citizens of these and surrounding communities take ad- vantage of these programs to fur- ther their education. 95 NEW VO-TECH ADDITION A new wing valued at $800,000 was put into use in August 1977, This major addition to the vast Vo-Tech complex houses four voca- tional and technical programs. Major features of the new building are a greenhouse and a student lounge. A DICKENS CHRISTMAS 1977 Prior to the Christmas hohdays, the Specta- tor Club sponsored a Dickens Christmas. An old-fashioned Christmas dinner was served to the student body at tables decorated with greenery and candles. Christmas carols were sung by all. Amy Wamock, along with daddy, Dean Wamock, recited the Night Before Christmas. Members of the Spectator Club presented scenes from Dickens ' stories. Afterward, was- sail was served to all who attended. The au- dience consisted of the majority of the student body, some faculty, and several townspeople. 1977 GRADUATION May 13, 1977 Rev. Jerry Davis of Moorhead United Methodist Church deUvered the invocation for the Friday evening graduation ceremonies held in the Coliseum. After spe- cial music by the Fine Arts department, Deans Harmon Boggs and Travis Thornton presented the 272 candi- dates for graduation. Dr. J.T. Hall awarded the diplo- mas. Proud parents and friends taking thousands of snapshots of their favorite graduates replaced the tradi- tional recessional. The Trojan could be found anywhere. He was on the football field, the basketball court, the baseball diamond, the tennis court, the track, the end of a ping pong table, or at the opposite end of a golf club. Whether it be intramural or competitive with another school, the Trojan never gave up. He may not have won every game or run a play just right, but the de- termination was always there. Sometimes he won- dered if it was worth all the hard work when the coach blessed him out or he tore the cartilage in his knee. But things such as this did not stop the Trojan; he kept marching on. 1 10 Before any Trojan could go into war, he had to be instructed by his leader Coach Bellipanni, (above left); Coach Grubb, and Coach RandaU. (above nght) are the fearless leaders of the Trojan footbaU team. Assisting the coaches are managers Sandy Wilson (top right) and Kevin Patton. (lower nght). Through then- leadership, training, and possible threats they led the Trojans to a 3-7 overall record for the season. The Trojans opened the 1977 season with a 7-0 loss to East Central Col- lege. For the very first time the Trojans employed the veer offense. The next n o Coahoma Junior CoUege Tigers with a 20-8 wm. The MDJC defense stonewaUed the Tigers to only one first down m the game. The veer offense paid off when MDJC met the Copiah-Lincoln Junior College Wolves. The Trojans gained 295 total offense yards with a 28-0 victory. The game against Itawamba Junior College gave the Trojans a 21-3 win. The MDJC first touchdown came with a 3:43 remaining in the third quarter on a 38-yard pass from quarterback Jim Hughes to flanker Pat Peay. The next game left the Trojans a bit bewildered as they lost to Hinds Junior CoUege 32-29. Gary Henderson snatched the first score on a 57-yard run in the second quarter. Northwest Junior College edged by the Trojans 7-6. This loss dropped MDJC to third place in the division. Homecoming was spoiled by Holmes Junior Col- lege in a 10-0 loss for MDJC. The Trojans did gain 12 first downs and 231 yards rushing. The losing streak continued as the Trojans fell to East Mississippi Junior College 17-15. East Missis- sippi was held to two first downs by the Trojans. . iB nwifciiii fiifr-i ■ ■ II iiifir ■ I ri iiaiii 112 The home season was closed with a 10-0 loss to Northeast Junior College. The punting of Pat Peay was the only bright spot of the contest for MDJC as he kicked the ball 11 times for a 41.8 average. The season ended on a sour note for the Trojans as they lost the last game to Jones Junior College 24-6. Dennis Car- doso made the only Trojan touchdown. They won the state championship in 1977 and have lost only two games so far this season of the 1 1 games they have played. Coach John Vickers (at right) has put a lot of time into leading the team to such a mark. They have spent many hours on the court practicing; some- times they would be the only people on campus. They never complained about the long hours or hard work. They could raise excitement at the games Like no one has never seen. A Trojan bas- ketball game dull? With a team like this one dull was the last word one would use to describe the team. They marched onto the court with their heads high and right on to victory. 120 12] 122 I (L. to R.); John Bodie, Jaime Bell, Clay Brooks, Bill Bunch, Johnny Millwood, Gary Henderson, Donna Gainspoletti, Stacy Randall, Coach John Vickers. As one can see from the looks on Bill Bunch ' s and Gary Henderson ' s face (right) the Trojan tennis team of 1977 had a lot of fun. To them, practice was more fun than work. They brought in some wins much to the pleasure of Coach Vick- ers ax d the school. The courts were al- ways full after hours with one of the play- ers trying some new play. But as always the Trojans came through. 126 ft INTRAMURAL For those on campus who are not big enough, brave enough, or just a little bit lazy, there are the intramural sports. Football, baseball, basketball, ping pong, pool, you name it they play it. From the Born Losers to the Playboy Athletic Club, the Trojan spirit prevailed. The guys, gals, even the teachers got in on the action. Everywhere one looked, the Trojan was march- ing forward. HONORS DES. Right When not behind a camera taking pic- tures, Robin Rush- ing helped to ad- dress copies of the Delta Herald to be mailed out. Left Gwen Horis checks to see that the pictures are dry and ready to be printed. Gwen worked with photography as well as helping layout the pages. The Delta Herald is the onlv Missis- sippi junior college newpaper printed on campus by the stu- dents. Darlene Al- len, (right), a mem- ber of the off-set printing class, types up the copy. Other members of the off-set printing class check the press as copies of the Delta Herald begin to roU off. Ches Pearman, Anne Williams, and Obed KUne worked with the pa- per writing editorials, gathering news, and drawing cartoons. When publication began second semester, something new was added. A town newsletter highlighting events and people in Moorhead was included. The Delta Herald was published bi-weekly to keep students informed of the latest MDJC news. 159 Editor: Anne Williams RETROSPECT Spr.: Woo ten One can tell by the in- tense and sometimes frus- trated looks on the faces of the staff of the Retrospect that designing and laying out a yearbook is not al- ways easy. Cynthia Willis (far left) types up the names for the student directory section. Many hours were devoted to arranging the pictures and being sure the names were spelled cor- rectly. The same was true also for designing the lay- out like Barry Smith (left) is doing. Every organization has to have a person behind it to be sure things are done the way they should be. Miss Laney Wooten (right) did just that. She kept the staff on its toes to be sure layouts were completed, pictures taken and deadlines met. Working with Pam McCullough, Miss Wooten helps draw up the rough drafts. Nan Cole (far right) proofreads the copy before maiUng it. Even with a capable staff, the editor still had plenty to do. Anne Williams (far left) checks to see that no one was omitted from the stu- dent directory. Anne had to see that layouts were fin- ished and sent to the pub- lishers. She set up dates for pictures and helped the other staff members such as Terrell Wells and Gwen Horis (right) with the final layouts. But all were very relieved the day the year- book was finished. The long hours had paid off 160 STUDENl UFE FACES All over the MDJC campus one could see the many expressions peering from the faces of the students and fac- ulty. The reasons were numerous and varied for the smiles, frowns, and wonder. The smiles could be caused from: 1) passing a test, 2) having a date to the basketball game, 3) getting a phone call from that certain someone, or 4) being able to sleep late. Once in a while we needed no reason to smile; we did it just because we were happy. The frowns also had their place on the faces of the MDJC group. They re- sulted from: 1) being mad at the coach, 2) having a test on Friday morning, 3) having to get up, 4) finding out your girl wants to break up. Whatever the reasons, the students were just expressing themselves, being the people they are. How many of us will ever forget the time it actually snowed in Moor- head? For many of us, we spent the whole weekend here. You didn ' t dare go anywhere unarmed (with a snow ball that is) or you were liable to have your head knocked off. Some of us skated on the ice patches and bus- ted our backsides while others got into World War Three with the snowballs! Boredom quickly set in. Ah, but Dean Wamock ' s Dynamite Disco came to the rescue. Soul Train was performed Uve in the Union and the party was much later moved to the Moorhead Recreation Center. Many of us improved our game of Spades and drank the Coke ma- chines dry. Funds were low and transportation frozen. So we chipped our money together and walked to Mr. Quik. We were glad when the snow left and all we had to contend with was the rain. It is late morning and you are in class. Your 1977 Monte Carlo is parked in the circle in front of the Union. The security guard is making his morning rounds. Suddenly he approaches your car. He walks around to check the back bumper to see if there is a MDJC parking sticker on it. He checks to see if you have parked in a visitors parking space. Now you ' re in trouble. As you walk out of the Union, you try to think up a good excuse to get out of a ticket. You even say, But I didn ' t know students weren ' t supposed to park here. Nothing works. You are now the proud owner of a $2 parking ticket. Just add it to the $20 worth of tickets you already have. 168 Although each student at MDJC was different, we all had a few things in common. We smiled big when the camera was focused on us, saved at least three cuts for Christmas and spring fever, went to see Sat- urday Night Fever at least once, went to all the par- ties, changed roommates about twice, tried to make it to class before the last bell, drank Dr. Pepper and Miller (not necessarily together), waited in the long line at noon to eat, played pool, kissed good night on the dorm steps, yelled for the Trojans, never learned to like history, skipped at least one dorm meeting, came in after 2 o ' clock whenever possible, went to Greenwood whenever we could, hoped we never got caught in the dorm that wasn ' t ours (but some did), attended both the girls and boys open house, cooked in our room we were told not to, never could find a parking place around the Union at lunch time, sat in the grill, celebrated at the Grove even when there was nothing to celebrate, made friends, and hollered Go A ' head Mo ' Head! 170 Stanny Sanders Library Mississippi Delta Community College Moorhead, MS 38761
