The cheerleaders are a hard working group of dedicated girls. They practice at least five hours a week, spend about two hours a week painting signs, and countless hours are spent in meetings, planning pep rallies, skits, and other spirit-rais- ing activities. However, we desperately need the support of the student body and a majority of the foot- ball team, said one of the cheerleaders. As sponsor for the cheerleaders, I feel they have a real sense of spirit, pride, and togeth- erness which has been reflected in my close con- tact with them in planning activities for this year, said Dean Robert Warnock in a recent interview. The cheerleaders spent the first part of August practicing and preparing for camp which was held at Memphis State University on August 14- 18. At this Universal Cheerleader Association Camp, they earned two superior ribbons and three excellent ribbons in cheering, sideline chants, and fight song routines. MDJC ' s cheerleaders this year are headed by Terry Lewis of Clarksdale. Terry isa sophomore, studying Physcial Education. The other soph- omores are: Brenda Walker of Greenville who is a Commercial Art major; Beverly Waid, a Secre- tarial Science major from Belzoni; and Cindy Garvin of Greenville who is studying in the field of Special Education. The three Freshman cheerleaders are Cheryl Ashley of Cleveland whose major is Data Processing; Jennifer Maugh, an English student from Leland; and Tammy Williams of Greenville studying Physical Education. Traveling with the TJ ' s is an experience that attracts many students to campus— as several of the freshman TJ ' s candidly admit this year. For instance, Greg Sartin ' s glee was almost uncontained the day that he learned that he had been selected from the fall au- dition group for membership. Director Joe Abrams ' pro- gram materials, his corny joke routines and other deft touches in practice sessions, the trips to area and state meet- ings, the hamburger fund, and the comraderie of being a member of the group are bits of nostalgia that make being a XJ an unforgettable experience. Mrs. Abrams continues to be an asset to the group as cos- tume designer and choreogra- pher. Newly appointed Music Instructor Ron James has added his expertise to practice ses- sions also. The chorus, open to mem- bership for anyone who likes to sing, schedules special campus assemblies periodically during the year. The Christmas pro- gram, staged in Vandiver Union, was especially good. Di- rector Ron James, assisted by Ricky Crick, presented a varied program of Christmas music. Linda Watson ' s rendition of SWEET LITTLE JESUS BOY was particularly beautiful. The Chorus: Front row (1. to r.) Connie Simmons, Linda Allen, Debbie Morgan. Paula Simon, Debbie Keith.
