From the years 1966 to 1974, Mississippi Delta Junior College has been totally rebuilt in stature and in strength. Mississippi Delta has come from that old little hick junior college that no one had ever heard of, to be- come the leading junior col- lege in the state. Mo ' head has grown in size and also in in- fluence. Mississippi Delta is a junior college of tradition. This junior college is not what it was , nor, is it yet what it is going to be. But the evidence of growth in physical plant renovation and educational programs at present is dramatic. So, the stafl dedicates the 1974 Retrospect to the man who has been the most influ- ential director of the junior college ' s growth since 1966. Because of his leadership, the administrative staff and the faculty have tripled in size since 1966. He has extended the service of the junior col- lege to all areas of the Delta community. The whole of his profes- sional career is an impressive example of personal achievement. A veteran of World War II, he attended MDJC (then Sun- flower). He completed his un- dergraduate study at the Uni- versity of Southern Mississippi. He recently com- pleted his doctoral study at th e University of Mississippi. He began his teaching ca- reer as a coach and social science teacher at Areola High School. For five years he was the principal of Leland Ele- mentary School, and for an- other five years, he was the principal of Leland High School. For two years, he was the principal at Greenville High School, and he was an assistant superintendent for the Greenville Public Schools for one year. In 1966, he be- came the President of Missis- sippi Delta Junior College. He is a member of the Mis- sissippi Educational A.ssocia- tion, the Mi.ssissippi Associa- tion of School Administrators, the Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges, the National Association of School Admin- istrators, the Phi Delta Kappa and the Delta Kappa Pi. He is the past president of the Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges; he has been chairman of the Board of Dea- cons at the Moorehead Baptist Church; he is serving on the Executive Committee of the Delta Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America; the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Economic Council, and on the Executive Com- mittee for the Moorhead Ro- tary Club. He is a past presi- dent of the Leland Lions Club and the Washington County Educational Association. It is with deep respect and high regard that we dedicate the 1974 Retrospect to Dr. J. T. Hall. ASSOCIATION PROVOKES TALK AND SOME ACTION The purpose of the MDJC Faculty Association is to promote the professional and social interests of the teaching faculty. Each year the group sends representatives to Mississippi Education Association. The group participates in the activities of the Mississippi Junior College Faculty Association. MDJC Instructor Dwight Spencer is currently serving as state president of that organization. The association held a fish fry at the opening of school and has sent special remembrances to faculty and adminis- tration staff members throughout the year. Speaking of Watergate, hang on Nixon, Friday ' s Coming , it won ' t be long before those oil derricks will once again start humming. The Zeta Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa fraternity a non-secret national honor society for junior colleges, was inaugurated at Mississippi Delta Junior College in 1947. The membership is composed of those students whose grades rank in upper ten percent of the college enrollment and who receive unqualified endorsement by the faculty committee on Honors and Awards, and from the active fraternity members. In addition to the require- ments of superior scholarship and leadership, the candidate must also have shown evidence of good character. BETA ALPHA SCHOLARS is an honor society, authorized by the faculty May 4, 1961, designed to afiord recogni- tion for academic achievement. Admi.ssion is based on the attainment of 3.5 or better academic average, and record of good school citizenship. The latter qualification will be judged by all students who carry a minimum load of fifteen hours. It especially olfers recognition to those students who commute and are unable to assume an active role of leadership in the various school organizations. The activities of the Baptist Student Union this year can generally be summarized in one word, outreach. The year started with a retreat at Leroy Percy state park tor the BSU Officers and other interested students that attended. The State BSU Convention that met at Starkville was of par- ticular meaning to the students who attended from MDJC. The Leadership Training Conference meeting at Camp Ga- raywa, Clinton was well attended by the local BSU. Several of the BSU ' ers were active participants in planning REW the activities and presiding at the sessions. Along the lighter side, the Hee-Haw Hoedown held the first semester was a time of letting-down-of-the-hair and real e.xcitement. The BSU Basketball team made trips to Delta State and the State BSU Tournament at Blue Mountain. The team enjoyed one of its most successful outings in years. The purchase of the BSU bus. Glory Train, made it possible for students to make many trips such as the skating and bowling occasions at Greenwood. So far as spiritual significance is concerned, the NJR Sing- Out Group was tremendous . . . making more than forty appearances in churches and on campus and other places. Noonday Devotionals, Bible Study, Morning Watch Prayer Time were all well attended by many different students. Three BSU ' ers, Bruce Morgan, Gene Neal and Thad Prit- chard, served as Summer Missionaries under the appoint- ment of the State BSU Missions Committee. Officers of the BSU are president, Dianne Sexton; soph vice president. Donna Mullins: fresh vice president. Gene Neal; social chairman. Sherry Branning; publicity chairman, Sid Woodward; mission chairman, Sarah Hardway; paper editors, Gerald Russell. Ronnie Keenum; worship chairman. Gale Arnold; assistant worship chairman, Charlene Shelton; NJR student director, Thad Pritchard; assistant social chair- man, Marsha Winborn; assistant mission chairman, Karen Watkins; assistant publicity chairman, Marsha Savell. Mississippi Delta Junior College is a state institution and is non-sectarian; however, it places a high value upon a whole- some religious environment for students and faculty. Stu- dents are encouraged to attend the church of their choice and to become members if they so desire. The religious programs of the college are chiefly promoted by the religious organiza- tion located on the campus— the BSU. College related personnel who work with religious activities on campus are Rev. Jerry Davis, Rev. Cornell Daughtry and Father James Kelly. Rev. Davi Rev. He is walking rather briskly as there is an early morning chill in the air. Hey, Hey, Walter! A voice from behind is heard. What, is the flat reply. You do your math homework? a fellow classmate asks. What math homework? comes the rather irritating answer. You didn ' t do it. huh? Nope. You don ' t like Cain, do ya? What ' s that got to do with it? Well I don ' t like the way he teaches, you know, just lectures us and all. How else would he teach us? Wal- ter replies. Well he could let just kind of par- ticipate more, you know, like work the problems on the board, or something. Sure, you participate all you want, I am gonna sit back and sleep. Walter is in the Union now, the pop of the balls on the pool table breaking into his thoughts. Maybe just one game, but the bell rings for class, so much for that. Walter goes over to the Voc-Tech Building a two hundred-yard-or-more walk that Walter has learned to hate four times a day. As he walks into class, late, as usual, Cain walks in be- hind him, late, as usual and begins to call roll. Walter hears the steady monolog of Cain ' s ever raspy voice. Then without warning Cain an- nounces. Pass in your homework. I don ' t have mine, comes Walter and a few others ' replies. Why don ' t you let out early today, Mr. Cain? Walter pleads. Never satisfied, are you? comes the reply. Nope, retorts Walter. Class begins. As usual they begin to run over the previously assigned home- work. Walter begins to doze off to sleep and soon finds himself engrossed in a dream. Wake those boys up if they want to stay in :lass! comes a loud raspy Cain voice. Walter is instantly alert and finds he was not alone in dreamland as two other heads pop up off the desks. Cain goes on with class, obviously irritated. The bell rings and a soft sigh is heard throughout the room. Walter walks out and makes his way to the Coke machine when a voice from behind is heard. You do your homework? What homework? replies Walter. You don ' t like him, do ya? Nope. Walter Lawler 163 IMPATIENT I CAN ' T WAIT. The girls gather in Penrod Stennis Dorm waiting impatiently for their three-thirty soap opera, All My Chil- dren. The soap opera bring togeth- erness among the girls, and there is peace. Girls are waiting impatiently for the story to start. The dudes can never pull the girls from their soap opera . . . flurrying home is uppermost ui Ihesc commuters minds 164 GAMES WISH I COULD WIN. Games are fun. Winning is one ' s determina- tion. One likes competition, but when he wins there is usually ful- fillment for him and his associates. I love competition. 165 LOVE I LOVE HIM. 166 a TOGETHERNESS Togetherness is something our society lacks. One can sometimes see a mixed group talking together on MDJC cam- pus. We need to stick together and show our love, concern, and understanding for one another. The river gathers up bits of soil ... so do the students hope for togetherness to build friendship, peace, and fulfillment. Rhonda Jones Closing Section Editor 167 1974 ... A YEAR OF 1973-74 was a year of turbulence not only in the emotions of the students, but in the affairs of our nations. In sports, the conflicts brought forth emotions that were expelled through victory. And, the pressures of grades, dorm life, col- lege hfe and maturity were built up into conflicting emotions that were expelled outwardly in radically different ways. 1973-74 was a year of broadening and development. Sharing emotions, feelings of love, and fear with our teachers, as well as our friends, has taught us to grow in stature and in wisdom. For some of us, 1973-74 has taught us to face the reality of the real world to walk upon the path of maturity, without having to run away from fear. Finally, 1973- 74 was a year of fulfillment. The graduating sophomores have discovered their field in which their future lies. Some will continue their education, while others will go out into the world to try and grasp their future with the knowledge that they have found. Throughout the year, we have all made new friends with whom we share many-and-never-to-be-forgotten memo- ries. Most OS us will not toss our memories away, but will keep them with us forever. This year, the Annual Staff has tried to portary the feelings, emotions, and expressions of the students, so that they will always be remembered. To these people I would like to extend my thanks: Miss Laney Wooten, who patiently has advised me through many hardships and has sacrificed her time at night to help us get ready to meet our deadlines. Lamb ' s Studio, who have done a great job on the class pictures, and helped me through Homecoming. Jon Shirley, who spent many long hours in the dark room to develop pictures for me. My Staff, who patiently co-operated with me. And most of all, stayed at school late at night to meet our deadlines. Thank you The 1974 RETROSPECT Kaihie Tavtor
