1971 WETR0PE€T MIS$M1PPI DELTA M OR gOLLEGE, HEAi, MISSISSIPPI IT Editor Cindy Howell • Business Managers Patti Lewis and Margaret Broussard • Cover Artist Chuck Abraham Contents Here we are in a totally different kind of life. Alone, looking for a place to fit, a place to belong. Maybe not with a crowd but with just one more. Grades. Sports. Elections. We all tried to make it one way, didn ' t we? You felt the overpowering ego when you made it, but the sickening emptiness of defeat lasted a little longer. () OS H L 1 1 It ' s beside a cotton field this side of Indianola. Oh, you ' ve never heard of it. Why, didn ' t you say Moorhead in the first place instead of Mississippi Delta? By any name, it ' s the same place. It ' s home to us. • Ever had to explain to a boy why he can ' t come in the lobby? Ever been bored enough to cover the halls with shaving cream? Even seen President Hall hand out diplomas for an hour and a half? If you have, then you ' ve been to Moorhead. up at 8:00 and you ' ve missed breakfast. You just barely make it to that JTXX 8:25 class, but of course it ' s raining. One more class, then it officially becomes the weekend. T.G.I.F. The place is changing. You can barely remember the trees that were once here where half -built structures now stand. In a jew years we won ' t know the place. But classes continue and if your lucky, you ' ve got a date Thursday night. You ' re two minutes late and there is not a parking place anywhere. Maybe the cop won ' t notice you have the wrong sticker for the right parking place. Same classes: same kind of Friday, but Macon seemed a little different last night. Maybe it was, I can ' t remember. Academics Editors Yvonne Wren Molly Tolar During the past year MDJC has shown noticeable growth and development. The physical appearance of the campus has changed with the addition of the lake, the new men ' s dormitory, the library-learning resource center and the fine Arts-Administration complex. President Hall is recognized as a capable leader because of his relationship with the total administration, faculty, and students. — president j. t. hall student council The Board of Trustees are appointed by the County Board of Supervisors for a four year term. East Miss lr East Ccnlr 1 8 Sports The 1971-72 season got off to a slow start as the Mississippi Delta Trojans dropped their first game to Jones 23-7. The second game ended in a tie against Ittawamha, 14-14 and the third game also ended in a loss as Co- Lin handed the Trojans a bitter 35-7 defeat. However, their two defeats were from the south division of the state conference and the Trojans were still undefeated in the north. The long trip to Northeast seemed to give the Delta boys a chance to think and get their minds on what they were supposed to do. The thinking paid off as Delta won its first game of the season and the first of a six-game winning streak. Delta defeated the northern boys by a score of 26-14. 1971-72 north mississippi football champs The next week the Trojans were hosted by long time rival, Holmes. Pride was at stake as the Trojans defeated the Bulldogs for the eleventh straight year by a score of 27-12. Northwest then invaded the Delta area and put up a hard fight to the very end of the game. The situation . . . seconds left, fourth down and several yards to go, and the score 14-13, Northwest ' s favor. The crowd was screaming GO, GO, GO, as Coach Randall sent in place kicker, Tom Griffing. A hush fell over the Trojan Field as the two teams lined up against each other. The snap was good, the kick went up and traveled 37 yards to split the goal post. Griffing ' s kick gave the Trojans a 16-14 win and boosted them into second place in the north division. Next came Homecoming. The Trojans were to play host to the Southwest Bears from Summit. Alumni came from all over the Delta and helped create the excitement that comes with every Homecoming. After a fun-packed day, the alumni and s tudents watched MDJC defeat the Bears in a fair game, 21-0. With the four-game winning streak Delta had, it would only seem natural that the games should get easier, but, not so. Delta had three games left and all of them had to be won. The teams left to be played were East Mississippi, defending North champs East Central, and the nation ' s number one junior College t£am. Gulf Coast. Delta traveled to Scooba, Mississippi, to play mudball with the East Mississippi Lions. Delta got two quick touchdowns in the first quarter as East got one. That is the way it stayed the rest of the night. In the second quarter the rain fell and so did every ball carry as the traction was very slim. Then came the big test. The Delta boys visited the small town of Decatur to meet East Central for the North Mississippi Championship. The game was long and exciting. Wit h four minutes remaining. East Central was ahead by a score of 9-7. With fourth down and long yardage, East Central kicked to the Trojans. Joey Greco took the punt around midfield and with key blocks from the determined Trojans, he took the ball untouched into the endzone. The defense held as Central gave final effort and Delta went home with the north division title. Two weeks later, Delta had its chance at the State Championship. The Trojans faced Gulf Coast, the number one junior college team in the nation. Both teams were unable to muster any offense in the first half and Delta went to the dressing room with a very slim 7-6 margin oi ' er the Bulldogs. The second half was winewhat different as the South dogs held the Trojans to one touchdown and scored three for themselves. The Bulldogs took the State Chamfnonshif) by a score of 27-14. Even thouoh they lost the State Championship hid. the MDJC Trojans are still the North State Cliamfuonship team, a well deserve title. This year the book took on a different look with changes in the traditional features section, a larger book, new sculptured layouts and an effort was made to change the book from a stereotyped picture book to a journalistic project. More work goes into a yearbook than most of us realize. To Jon Shirley our student photographer and to Leslie Kent who bailed us out of many a tight spot, special thanks. Mr. Lamb is responsible for almost all the pictures in the Achievements Section as well as formal and informal sports activities pictures. And thanks to David Rushing for his candid shot. The cover is an original design by Chuck Abraham and I am grateful to him for his contribution to ' - individuality of the book. And most of all to the staff itself for their many hours of hard work which have gone unnoticed. Lastly to the whole student body and faculty for their patience and cooperation. It was . . . Shelia ' s violent change from tradition Patti ' s and Margaret ' s bookkeeping systems Jon ' s unfailing confidence Scott ' s patience in redrawing layouts Molly ' s talented interpretations Yvonne ' s humor in the darkest hour Melinda ' s temper under control Sharon ' s spelling ability Terry ' s newfound talent in the dark room L
