This yearbook is the result of the accumulated assistance of several persons : the staff and the assistant editor, Evelyn Cocilova; Mrs. J. D. Stonestreet, the sponsor of the Retrospect, who has given unsparingly of her effort and her time when she could afford neither; Mr. Les Lamb and Mr. Dewey Sanford of Lamb ' s Studio in Greenwood, Mississippi, photographers for the yearbook and sympathetic advisors to the bewildered editor; Rickie Anderson, the art editor for the Retrospect; Walter Harrison, the school photographer, who never failed to help in time of need ; Mrs. Abrams and her art students, who designed the cover for the Retrospect; the entire faculty and administration, who have assisted me beyond the call of duty just by being the nice people they all are; and the Benson Printing Company, very able and patient publishers of the 1967 Retrospect. I thank you all for everything you have done to help me with my preparation of this yearbook and even more for your invaluable morale-boosting amidst my confused frustration. This has been a year of preparation, not only for MDJC students, but for the school itself. Under the direction of President Hall, who merits much praise for his leadership and the admirable job he has done, the building program to enlarge and improve our school verges on materialization. In a few years the 1967 Retrospect will picture a school as antiquated as the 1927 Retrospect does now. And so, Mississippi Delta, as Emerson prophesied to Whitman, I greet you at the beginning of a great career. Shirley Ferguson, Editor This past year at Mississippi Delta Junior College has epitomized a multi-purposed journey. Some students embarked on this journey to delay the desires of our duty- minded uncle; some to ensnare some victim of the opposite sex; some to elude home and its confines ; some to have something to do; and others to further their education. Although the projects of some of us have really not been to acquire more schooling, all of us have gained more education — knowledge or a lesson from the lack of knowledge. This book is an attempt to relate this year ' s journey through the biography of an ordinary day, for these ordinary days have made up the school year 1966-1967. Editor Assistant Editor Business Manager SHIRLEY FERGUSON EVELYN COCILOVA LEEANNE CARR Volume XLII Mississippi Delta Junior College Moorhead, Mississippi Acknowledgements 21 14 I 1 ' im m 7 V i6 IN MEMORIAM MR. WILLIAM BOYD HORTON, SENIOR President of Mississippi Delta Junior College 1944 — 1966 i8 Mr. William Boyd Horton, Sr., in his dedicated service as president, distinguished the Mississippi Delta Junior College Campus. During his term as president, Sunflower Junior College was changed to Mississippi Delta Junior College under the eight- coimty system, the bus program was innovated, and the present building program was initiated. J ' The most enduring evidence of Mr. Horton ' s service, however, is to be found in the persons of the many former Delta Junior students who are leading their post- collegiate lives — more productive citizens because of the high moral standards this gentle man so fervently promoted. 19 IN MEMORIAM MR. J. D. STONESTREET The memory of this quiet, unintrusive man pervades Mississippi Delta Junior College, mourning his tragedy. A coach for some and a teacher for many, M r. J. D. Stonestreet was an inspiration for us all. ■2.0 If our school year is a journey, then the faculty and administration are un- doubtedly our compass and road map. On the preceding page the following section has been entitled Acknowledge- ments. The next twelve pages attempt to explain this departure from routine and, in so doing, recognize the value of Mr. Hall and his staff. Departing from our metaphorical theme, the staff of a junior college is a frequently unnoticed, yet very vital link — for many, a link between the care- free adolescence of high school and the budding maturation of senior college, and for the many others who will not attend senior college, a link of even more consequence between the foibles of childhood and the fumblings for liveli- hood. This all sounds heroic enough, and indeed it is; yet let us abandon for a moment our avid participation in campusology and consider their task on a day-to-day basis, as they are forced to do. It is hopeful that then you will see why this section has been headed Acknowledgements. Their work-a-day world is a panorama of forged excuses, leaky faucets, lost meal tickets, suspiciously identical test papers, and other similarly exciting affairs. MRS. Having done so, we halfway realize that we shall leave Junior College to undergo new and fresh adventures while they stay to repeat their routine of teaching, listening, advising, and assisting students no different from ourselves. Surely this must be. in the words of a once popular song, kind of a drag. Thus, to you, Faculty and Administration, we the students of MDJC offer our insufficient gratitude and acknowledgements — gratitude for accepting those forged excuses and for all your efforts in our behalf, and acknowledgements for we know not what ... all this lies in the future. If this book is to transport the reader through the journey of an ordinary day at MDJC, is it not appropriate that the first section be that of classes? For classes, incorporating learning and edu- cation, are the hub of the day, no mat- ter how many other activities and events transpire throughout the day. These classes justify our being here, and everyone, from the janitor to the president, is here that we may be afforded the opportunity to learn. 36 SOPHOMORES First Row: WAYNE ALFORl) SAMMIE ALLEN BUFORD ALLISON Greenwood Greenville Greenwood Second Row: RICKIE ANDERSON Clarksdale Art Club 1, Vice-Pres. 2; Retrospect Staff 2; BSU 1. 2; Band 1. 2; Stage Band 1, 2; Petals Staff 1. 2; Chorus L CECIL BAILEY Cleveland Student Council Vice-Pres. 2; BSU Bible Study Leader 1, 2; Petals Staff 2. Because this is junior college, the organizations must be more or less sandwiched in between studies and all other activities. But these organizations have a very important function: they provide union and through union a cooperation of effort among the students to make MDJC an ever-improving insti- tution. Tliey give the students that early chance to exhibit leadership or adher- ence to leadership — a chance we will have access to for the rest of our lives. The group has sponsored several campus projects including a homecoming display and the production of Oklahoma which was presented by the student body. The chorus is under the direction of Mr. Chuck Montgomery, instructor of voice. 75 MISSISSIPPI DELTA BAND Co-Drum Majorettes and Feature Twirlers SANDRA LITTLE and DOROTHY GAYLE BLACK The MDJC Band is an opportunity for the student to carry forward his interests in performing instru- mental music into college life. THE DANCING The Dancing Deltettes, numbering twenty-one, worked diligently to produce a spectacular half-time show at every football game. Under the direction of Mrs. Gordon Aden, they were commended on each performance. Bubbling spirit and initiative made this fine dance and precision drill team a credit to our college. During the second semester the Deltettes traveled with the stage band and performed at civic clubs and high schools throughout this district. MRS. Trudging with one ' s raincoat over her bermudas to a grueling three-hour practice session, memoriz- ing many varying routines, changing one ' s apparel for the next act in an incredibly brief period of time in front of an incredulous audience, and smiling charmingly while one virtually freezes to death, are part of being a Deltette. Yet, all these things are only a means to the end: the provision of entertainment. The Retro staff lauds the Dancing Deltettes for executing this task so well and will- ingly. This past year for the Student Council has been one of plans and schemes centered around movies, elections, beanies, dances, jackets, and photog- raphy; it has been a year of projects and cam- paigns to revise the constitution, set up a secret ballot and amend out-moded rules. Many of these designs and intentions materialized; some did not. All were for the benefit of the student; if profit were made in one campaign, its dividends were pooled in another to advance the opportunities of Mississippi Delta students. Thus, the Student Council has rendered service not only to students of this year, but to Mississippi Delta Trojans in the years to come. MR. CHARLIE F. This staff and our school were the parents of a child: a yearbook. The 1967 Retro- spect was conceived in September. In October the publisher was consulted as to proper schedules, procedures, and the approximate date of its ex- pected arrival. The yearbook staff deliberated long and hard in selecting and preparing its diet — memories of you. There was much work engaged in the important element Time — nine months of time. In May it was delivered. And so, as with a child mature, this yearbook, once complete, is no longer the staff ' s; it belongs to you because you have created it with your life on the MDJC campus. Retrospect is an attitude — an intangible thing; our staff has tried to preserve the highlights of this year for this attitude. The 1967 Retrospect is our tangible effort. This was a year of precedence for the Retrospect staff: for the first time the yearbook deaft only with our college activities and not those of Moorhead High School also. Charles Lott, and the BSU Executive Council composed of MDJC stu- dents. The BSU means many things to many students — a source of spiritual strength, a place of fellowship, an opportunity to learn more about God. The BSU does not have a membership roll. A student becomes part of the BSU by participation and involvement in its activities. The regular features of the BSU are Noonday Devotions, Bible Study, Choir Practice, General BSU Meetings, and the annual BSU Banquet. This organization is sponsored by Baptist churches in the Delta. These churches were respon- sible for building the new BSU Center. 86 MR. CHARLES LOTT Director PHYLLIS GREEN President The Mississippi Delta Wesley Foundation, under the supervision of Reverend Robert Alexander of the Moorhead Methodist Church, is a specialized ministry of the Methodist Church fulfilling spiritual needs on the college campus. It seeks to make the meaning of Christian faith more real to the student during his college years by stimulating him to think about his vocation as a Christian student. In the Wesley Foundation, fellowship is both the pursuit of enjoyable companionship and service to the campus community. 87 WOMEN ' S COVER lATIO The Women ' s Student Government Association is composed of all residents in the girls ' dormitories. Its purpose is . . . to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defense, and promote the general welfare . . . Through the leadership of the W.S.G.A. Council or offi- cers and the dorm mothers, Mrs. Reeves and Mrs. Cartwright, the organization strives to fulfill these intents with monthly house meetings, trials held at Council meetings, enforcement of rules by monitors, fire drills (frequently after twelve), fund-raising pro- jects, and fund-exhausting festivities. Of course, everything concerning athletics is not over with the end of the afternoon, but this time of day is usually practice-time for the athletes. Surely none will argue the contention that practice is the most important part of athletics, for it faring out the ability and capacity while the mostly nocturnal contests are purely for the pleasure of their admiring on-look- ers. 96 99 MDJC 20 Sept. 11 MDJC 0 Sept. 17 MDJC 19 Sept. 24 MDJC 13 Oct. 8 MDJC 14 Oct. 15 MDJC 14 Oct. 22 MDJC 20 Oct. 29 MDJC 24 Nov. 5 MDJC 35 Nov. 12 MDJC 46 Nov. 19 TROJAN SCOREBOARD Southwest 13 Itawamba 7 Pearl River 6 Holmes 40 Holmes 12 Co-Lin 27 East Central 7 Jones 34 Northwest 6 East Miss 13 Head coach, J. Homecoming ' 67 began on Friday, November 4, with the film Trial and Error with Peter Sellers presented by the Student Council. On Saturday, November 5, the festivity fell into full swing as present-day students and MDJC alumni assembled on the campus to enjoy an art show presented by Mrs. Abrams and her students and exhibits con- structed by various organizations. In the afternoon the coronation was celebrated in the auditorium and Miss Sandra Little proclaimed Homecoming Queen by Jimmy Harris, Student Council President. Her royalty and that of her maids was feted with contributions from the chorus, band, and Deltettes. Following was a reception for the alumni in the library.
