Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1966 volume:

THE YEAR NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY-SIX RETROSFO PEOPLE PHASES PROGRESS With dreams and hope, freshmen come to M.D.J.C. to encounter college life, and sophomores return, wiser than before, but only slightly more sure of themselves and their goals. Classes begin. Study takes much time, and activities claim the extra hours and minutes. With sports, the Christmas dance, club meetings, band practice, speeches, chorus, and term papers the year moves swiftly. The freshmen discover the canteen, and, sooner or later, they also discover that they need to forget where it is for awhile. The sophomores decide whether to graduate — an all- important decision. And all through this, the faculty patiently strive to instill into us some of the knowledge they have acquired. Thus the year passes — successfully for most — through the efforts of people working and playing together on our college campus. I An institution of higher learning gives us much more than knowledge from books. It presents us with friendship as we discover other personalities in dorm jam sessions and campus contacts. It trains our patience as we study and attend class. It disciphnes us in independence as we first attempt to live away from home. It confers the privilege of sociaUzing with those around us — on the dorm steps after class, above all else, it bestows the beginnings of maturity, a goal worth striving toward. 9 f (ii i ! its progress Eager or otherwise, we return to M.D.J.C. to find that things are not quite the same as before. Students overflow the campus and by peeping over shoulders and jostling through the crowd, we observe the sign on the site of the future BSU student center and we notice the petunia bed outside the library. We feel that we have a broader view of life as we attempt another step on the ladder of success. JJJ BAPTIST Student Center SPONSORED BY MISSISSIPPI DELTA BAPTIST CHURCHES MDJC . . . its future . . . We will soon be leaving Mississippi Delta Junior College. Some of us will not. But those who return will find that M.D.J. C. is increasing in dignity and size. A new round science building will be built where the industrial arts building now stands, and the Baptist Student Union center will be begun. The standium will be in a new location because of a street running behind the gymnasium. No matter how our school changes physically, we will still be part of it. contents student Life ..... .12 Features 19 Administration 31 Organizations 41 Activities 59 Classes 73 1965- ' 66 DEDICATION Jewell Ball Hardin She stands before us, as she has stood before hundreds of other students, and instills in us the desire for knowledge. She makes each stu- dent realize that the will to acquire knowledge must be within the student himself. She adds kindling to the smoking fire of the desire for knowledge, and produces a living blaze when she tells her students, I only wish I could teach you. Throughout the Delta area a legend rings of her ability to teach — for she is a dedicated, master teacher. Her school day does not begin at 8: 25 and end at 2: 45; often she toils late into the night and early morning on her students ' papers. Her goal in teaching is not reached at the end of a semester or school year, but is reached when her students contribute some- thing to the world. In everything she finds beauty and strives to make her students see the beauty she sees. She considers herself a failure when one of her students fails. In counseling with the girls she leads them with love, patience, and understanding, to make wise decisions. Because she means so much to the students and faculty at Mississippi Delta Junior College, we fondly dedicate the 1966 Retrospect to JEWELL BALL HARDIN. Students braved the cold weather n orning, noon, and night to get their three square meals a day. Dorm life — close friends and long intimate conversations over problems of the days — these characterize the life of a typical MDJC co-ed. 15 A typical M.D.J.C. student keeps himself in- The scenic beauty of the M.D.J.C. campus greets the students as formed of current events. they arrive at school each morning. The presentation of the Homecoming Court and the coronation of the 1965-66 Homecoming Queen, Miss Dorothy Oldham, took place prior to the football game against Itawamba. Also, the former queens since 1955 were introduced at this time. After the football game in which Delta defeated Itawamba 31-13, a reception in the Tro- jan Shield was given for the alumni, faculty, and students. Almost every night of the previous week students had a chance to build up their school spirit and to display their eagerness for a victory on the football field. Monday night led the way with a pep rally and jukebox dance. Students again displayed their loyalty to the school and the team with a bonfire and pep rally Tuesday night. Thursday afternoon there was a home- coming pageant in the auditorium dur- ing which the name of the queen was announced. To climax that day ' s activi- ties, Trojans danced to the music of the Lancers at the National Guard Armory. Miss Dorothy Oldham UOMECOMING ROYALTY; Maids: Sandra Little, Man . „mc.s. MDJC HALL OF FAME Most people are dependable in one way or another, but few are dependable in all ways. Ralph Denson is one of the few. Knowing this, the student body elected Ralph Sophomore Representative on the Student Council. For two years, Ralph was a valuable member of the Sunflower Petals staff, and his article Rambling was read with interest. He was a member of both the marching and the stage band. Although Ralph was busy with these responsibUities, he was an active member of Wesley for two years, and he served as its secretary-treasurer his sophomore year. Valued for his courtesy and sincerity, Ralph has won the respect of the students and teach- ers. By constantly encouraging high standards of conduct, and by boosting school spirit, he has become a tremendous asset to our school. For these things, William Ralph Denson was chosen to have a place in the 1966 M.D.J.C. Hall of Fame. Ralph Denson Dwight Tolleson One of the highest honors a student can re- ceive is to be elected to the Hall of Fame. The basis for this honor is determined by the stu- dent ' s academic work, leadership ability, char- acter, and school participation. Dwight Tolleson is one who fulfills all these requirements. Whether making a free shot in an intramural game, conducting a religious program, or editing his column in the college newspaper, Dwight has truly made life a little better for all who have had the privilege to know him. Friendly, courteous, responsible, efficient — it seems remarkable that one person could exemplify all these characteristics. Knowledge is D wight ' s goal, and he is work- ing toward it through the application of sound study habits. A scholar and a gentleman, Jessie Dwight Tolleson now takes an honored place in the 1966 M.D.J.C. Hall of Fame. MISSISSIPPI DELTA ' S PRESIDENT The session of 1965-66 has perhaps been the best school year in the history of this institu- tion. Both the faculty and the members of the student body have exhibited a very fine atti- tude. The cooperation and the enthusiasm of the Board of Trustees, the members of the Alumni A.ssociation and friends of the College have been most encouraging. As Mississippi Delta Junior College faces the future, I can .see only a fine, developing insti- tution with a continuous increase in enroll- ment. Mississippi Delta Junior College ' s repu- tation for a good program is growing, and throughout the Mississippi Delta the interest in the institution is very high. This developing spirit and reputation that the college has gained is due to the fine support coming from every area. The continuous in- crease in enrollment demands that increased opportunities be offered to the students of the Delta area. This the Board of Trustees, Presi- dent and Faculty are determined to do. 3 DEAN and REGISTRAR Mrs. Jewell Hardin Mr. Leslie Steele 33 OFFICERS OF ADMINISTRATION Public Relations Business Manager Librarian Maurine Mclnnis Nannie P. The Council had charge of sponsoring a weiner roast-pep rally the first week of school. It initiated Freshman Night held at our first home football game against Perkinston. It had charge of the Homecoming Dance, Christmas Dance, and the Spring Dance; it cdso held jukebox dances Thursday nights in the old canteen. For the first time, Mississippi Delta had car decals made possible by an industrious Council. It, also, co-sponsored the Bubbles by the Billions campaign. These are only a few things the Student Council has done to make a better Mississippi Delta. 43 Eleanor Green , Editor-in-Chief RETROSPECT STAFF A very dependable and capable staff worked long hours on the yearbook. Our two photog- raphers, Les Lamb and Dewey Sandford, did a marvelous job of picture-taking. Mrs. Joe Abrams, our Art Director, also gave us her talented assistance. After taking every picture, after writing and revising every article at least three times, after very carefully typing each caption, and after checking and rechecking, all systems were go! The final frantic rush to meet the deadline resolved into one calm moment when the 1965- 1966 RETROSPECT was ready for the pub- lisher. And all for you — the ' 65- ' 66 faculty and student body of M.D.J. C. — we composed our history. In these pages we hope we have kept that part of the Trojan Spirit which is most treasured by you. This book is our book — the biography of over seven hundred students and faculty members. May it keep the Trojan Bell ringing for you wherever you go. First Row. The journalism class under the direction of the student edi- tor and the sponsor publish each edi- tion of the paper. Each student is responsible for one edition which is considered his term paper. The goal of the staff of the SUN- FLOWER PETALS is to publish cam- pus news and promote activities on our campus. One student has said the pur- pose of the PETALS is to give full, accurate, and unbiased accounts of the best features of Mississippi Delta Junior College. All editions of the PETALS have been superior. The staff has done com- mendable work and each student on the campus has truly looked forward to reading the latest edition. They also receive practical training in local hospitals and train for six weeks at the State Mental Hospital at Whit- field. After the students graduate from this program they are eligible to take the Missisippi State Board Examination to become registered nurses. The band under the di- rection of Mr. Joe Abrams spent hour upon hour rehearsing for football games, pa- rades, and concerts. The Deltettes under the direction of Mrs. Betty Stigler began rehearsal, as did the band, the week before school started. These girls practiced long and hard with and without the band to perfect their routines for the various ball games as well as their stage shows, which were presented during the spring months. The harmony with which these two groups worked is just one example of how they served as ambassadors for Mississippi Delta. CHEERLEADERS the Homecoming Game. Our cheerleaders boosted school spirit at every opportunity, cheering our TROJANS to a most successful season. MISSISSIPPI DELTA TROJANS g i e f Showing the best of sportsmanship and skill from the first game to the last, our MDJC Trojans battled their way through the 1965 season to a well-earned 7-3 record. The opening game with Perkinston was a valuable asset to the Trojans. Even though the Trojans lost the opening game to Perkinston with a 14-0 score, the knowledge and experience gained in this first encounter enabled the Trojans to emerge victorious over Southwest and East Mississippi in the next two games. Growing in skill and ability, the Trojans then travelled to Clarks- dale to meet Northwest. Though they fought long and hard, our Trojans were unable to subdue Northwest and yielded them a 13-8 vic- tory. Refusing to become discouraged, the Tro- jans continued to work. Wins over Itawamba and Hinds testified to the improvement of our Delta team. On to Pearl River our Trojans travelled — to the field where they had not won a game in sixteen years. Determined to end this string of defeats, the Trojans braced them- selves for the opening play. A fumble on the first play by the tense Trojans resulted in a Pearl River recovery and touchdown. After an unsuccessful PAT attempt, the score stood 6-0. The Trojans received the ball and took it in for the .score in about two .series of downs . The touchdown by Walter Pennebaker and the extra point conversion by James Hobson put the Trojans ahead 7-6. Later in the game, Hob- son kicked a 39-yard field goal, his longest of the season. While the Trojan defense refused to yield any more points to the Wildcats, our offense continued to score, and the Trojans won 24-6. Another victory, over Co-Lin, the next week gave the Trojans their fourth consecu- tive win. The following week our MPJC team trav- elled to Greenville to play East Central. Having a very good chance of coming into con- tention for the State Championship Crown, the Trojans wanted a victory. They got off to a slow start, however, and were never able to get back on their feet. East Central took advan- tage of a number of breaks and managed to defeat the Trojans 10-8 after a hard-fought battle. Special honor was received by James Hobson, who was named the outstanding player of the Trojan team. The last week of the season found Coach Randall and his Trojans travelling to Holmes to play their final game. Determined to win over the Holmes Bulldogs, the Trojans played very well and came through with a 28-7 victory — a great way to end the 1965 season. The scoreboards and sports columns told only part of the story of the 1965 season. Be- hind the downs made and the points scored were the work and devotion of fine coaches and the confidence and ability of a great team. Trojan Coach The M.D.J.C. Trojan basketball team kept school spirit high by showing promise through- out the 1965-66 season. They started off the season with two wins and a lot of ambition. Inexperience then began to take its toll on the Trojan team, which boasted only three sopho- mores out of twelve players. But the spirited Trojans fought every game with determination and were beaten only by narrow margins. They thrilled the Trojan fans and fired up new hope by winning two more games in a row about midway through the season. It was this spirit and never-give-up attitude which drew the many Trojan fans to the games. Regardless of the final scores, Trojan supporters always left the games proud of the skill, determination, and sportsmanship of the M.D.J.C. basketball Trojans. They partici- pated in matches with Hinds, North- west, East Mississippi and Perkinston. The highlight of the season was the playoff for the state championship at Mississippi College for the girls and at Hinds for the boys. Although they did not win the state overall championship, the team made an impressive showing. Annette and Jeanette Doyle captured the girls ' state doubles and Johnny McCool won the boys ' state singles. STATE WINNERS: Annette Doyle, Johnny McCool, Jeanette Doyle.
