:rospect EDITOR-IN-CHIEF— LaCelle Livingston BUSINESS MANAGER— Mike Williams Looking back xoe had to come this far up to see what was below. FOREWORD MEMORIES AND THINGS: When what we do now has become obsolete present, relegated to memory, and all that challenge and imbue us now have evanesced from the particular to an overall, purpvoseful general- ity, we will retain nothing of now but memories; and o nly perhaps might we recall that our purpose here at MDJC was to learn. There were so many other things. They always seemed to come first. What then is to be had from a tenure of approximately two years at any one place? Surely, in the expiration of such a substcmtial percentage of our lifetimes, we do, by simply existing, create and achieve more, much more, than academic credit. There are the infinitely complex, dehcate personal associations; there are the quandaries which exhibit the comforting habit of loosening them- selves from happiness remembered; there is much joy, though punctuated at times with great anguish. To sum it all up: The multifarious ingredients of now crystalUze into a distinct reality, the sole judge of which is memory. Memory, the creation of all that time, emotion, and labor. Bad memory, good memory — that memory is the creature that analyzes all that was done and said, that qualifies all things of a present gone by, that is judge in the cruellest trial of all — the trial of one- self. If there be no memory, then that part excluded from memory virtually never transpired, for in the absence of critical memory, no lessons can be learned nor triumphs lauded nor catastrophes mourned. There can have been no living — only the suicidal p er- formance of a tragic role. Bad memory? Good memory? Be honest and learn. Rehve, in part, now the year just past. You can do no greater justice to yourself and to this school than to be decisively, inwardly honest. May your memories he oj happiness and your sorrows he mel- lowed with age. DEDICATION A silent figure walks across campus. When spoken to, he replies with a smile. Behind that smile and unwavering blue eyes is a love for teaching, and a dedication toward inspiring his students to learn more than curriculum requirements. A man loved and admired by his students, he became almost a legend on campus. His classes were like no other math courses any had been in before. They learned his subject and knew their time had not been wasted at semester ' s end. Patience? — he was never observed with- out it. Understanding? — he understood, and he was the friend of many students who were unaware. Fairness? — there was no other way. A man who teaches, one who works to develop the minds of young adults, one who enjoys living. The face is that of Mr. J. D. Stonestreet, instructor of algebra and math- ematics for ten years at MDJC. To him we dedicate this 1964-1965 edition of the Retrospect. Freshmen toll the Trojan Bell to boost our boys to another victory. Re imred beUringer attire? Pajamas. The cheerleaders literally burst onto the scene bringing pep and vitality to fans and players alike. From a clandestine, illegal early morning bull session lubricated with that ever- lasting last cup of bitter thrice-brewed coffee to a jostling, tedious ride on one of the MDJC buses which flow like rivulets to the mainstream of college from every portion of the Delta, student life encompasses and engenders an ever varying aura of endless occupation and tiring boredom; stunning failure and enrapturing con- quest; bleak reality and vague, comfortable euphoria. Student life can never be static or uneventful, for student life is people; and the people concerned are vibrant, climbing human beings, each with his own ration of life to influence in measureless manner all with whom he has contact. We have passed now the crossroads of life. We are here and by our residence we have shown that we have chosen the high road. Though this way is not without its milestones, the many years to be covered are all rocky and brush-strewn. The only good road will be that which we have ourselves paved well. That comfort is ever behind us. If we retread it, we stop, reverse, and descend. In these — the many, many ways of student life — we go our chosen ways. IX Now, we ' re all unloaded. Finally! (All things come to him that waiteth.) Now, we wait in a hot sun to eat. Now, we wait in a hot corridor to buy our books. •V. The Deltettes! These high-stepping Delta beauties distinguished themselves gracefully throughout the year in their sundry performances. Beauty and skill — there is no more powerful a combination. Power packed, vital, necessary, the MDJC cheerleaders never failed to boost our spirits when they needed boosting the most. I A careless crowd of outrageously dressed frosh appear to be more interested in being conspicious than in the game ' s proceedings. While we weren ' t racing madly to beat the omnipotent bell ... . or relaxing in the canteen over cofee and small . . . we were partying, caught up in a whirl of extracurricular activities. Here, students enjoy the music and dancing at the Homecoming Dance. HOMECOMING 1964-65 Miss Evelyn McCamphell, here being crowned by Student Body Pres- ident Wayne Hodnett, was chosen to reign as Homecoming Queen 1964. The Queen and her court were entertained royally. Left to Right: Freshman Maid Dorothy Oldham, Sophomore Maid Joan Rice, Queen Evelyn McCampbell, Sophomore Maid Jackie Clark, Freshman Maid Patsy Edwards. President of the Student Council Wayne Hodnett presents Evelyn with a miniature crown to com- memorate this happy occasion. f Left to Right: Larry Herhison, Patsy Edwards, Early Lucas, Joan Rice, Louis Fratesi, Queen Evelyn McCampbell, Jimmy Guest, Jackie Clark, Tom Ewing, Dorothy Oldham. WHO ' S WHO MOST INTELLECTUAL Clovis Smith Truman Stokes . . . pure intellect will find pure pleasure. MOST POPULAR MOST TALENTED Sidney White Lizzie Mosco Billy Williams Dianne Murphey If he has a talent and learns some how to use it, he has gloriously succeeded and won a satisfaction and a triumph few men know. 11 MOST ATHLETIC Wayne Upchurch . . . with strength that naught could alter. MOST VERSATILE Joe Doss LaCelle Livingston Society will furnish work for all the seasoris: But the individual will furnish the industry. 7.7. THE RETROSPECT QUEEN 1965 MISS EVELYN McCAMPBELL Selector of Retrospect Queen JOHNNY CARSON CISSY FLOYD JOAN RICE ATTENDANTS PATSY EDWARDS JACKIE SPENCER CLOVIS SMITH Clovis Makamson Smith exemplified the students who come to college to achieve success in every field attempted. Her fresh- man year she was a representative to the Student Council and a member of the Women ' s Student Government Association. She served on the campus newspaper, the Sunflower Petals both her freshman and sophomore years. Clovis won a major part in the play Our Town and earned the Drama Award for her performance. Phi Theta Kappa membership was another achievement to be added to her list. Clovis was elected Most Intellectual girl this year. Still Constance is a wondrous excel- lence. Clovis Smith ' s success was won- drous, but success came naturally to her. Modest, sincere, Clovis was a good friend to all who knew her. Excellence became Clovis and she carried it well. Clovis Makamson Smith now joins the 1965 Hall of Fame. HALL OF FAME TRUMAN STOKES Truman Stokes was a compara- tively silent figure on campus, but his countenance portrayed depth of thought, sincerity of purpose, and humility of character. Truman was a member of both the marching and stage band. A legislator, he was elected to the Student Council his freshman year; next year he served on the Student Rules Committee. Truman was also elected as Most Intellectual Boy his sophomore year. For his achievements in grades and character he was asked to join Phi Theta Kappa. Give us courage and gaity and the quiet mind. This was the re- quest of MDJC. Truman answered this call. To the students that knew Truman, he was hard working, studious but yet had an ear for fun. Harry Truman Stokes rightly deserves this lofty position in the MDJC archives for his example of serious study and service to the school. LaCelle Livingston with modest dignity and calm content upheld and contributed to the standards set for the student of MDJC. She served on the Retrospect stafT for two years as Editor-in- Chief. Her activities were numerous. As a member of the band, she served first as a Deltette and next as a Delta Doll. She sang in the chorus two years and sang in the Trojanettes sextet her first year. She also acted in Our Town . A natural leader, LaCelle served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Stu- dent Council. She merited membership in Phi Theta Kappa her freshman and sophomore years, and was elected Most Versatile girl in the Who ' s Who election. LaCelle Livingston — where did one not see her? She served both students and teachers in every capacity. She knew almost everyone and greeted them with her quiet hello and friendly, shy smile. For LaCelle Livingston ' s dedication and devotion to every phase of MDJC, her name goes down in the 1965 Hall of Fame. LaCELLE LIVINGSTON HALL OF FAME DIANNE MURPHEY The most manifest sign of wisdom is a continual cheerfulness. A felicitous smile never left her face. A fierce determination never left her mind. A love of everything lovable distinguished Ruth Dianne Mur- phey and contributed to her delightful, sometime serious uniqueness. Dianne was a member of both the stage and concert bands. She. served as chorus accompanist two years and sang in the Trojanettes sextet her freshman year. Other activities include her being a member of Wesley two years, serving as its president her sopho- more year. Dianne was chosen to receive the Music award her freshman year, and was elected Most Talented gir l her sopho- more year. She was granted Phi Theta Kappa membership both years. Ruth Dianne Murphey, for her portrayal of ambition, talent, and honesty, takes her designated place in the 1965 Hall of Fame. The Trojans put up a determined fight but fell to the powerful Pearl River team.
