College is the smiles of success and the tears of failure. College is old friends, new faces, old questions, new answers, old problems, new insight. Yet all our definitions prove in- adequate. College teaches one to reason, to wonder, to evaluate, to achieve, to desire, to strive. College is an era in one ' s life, a part of a whole, but a part that is indescribable in importance, in enjoyment, in suspense, in hope. Defying definition, college is a place, a way of life, a force, a fantasy; has been a dream, a hope, a choice, an order, a fear; will ulti- mately become a memory of benches, bricks, snacks, books, and friends; of lines and love and lectures, labs and cokes, the Trojan Shield at seven, the library at eight-thirty, and weekends, the football Championship, the lunch line, assembly, and finals, and cheering, sneering, voting, laughing, being a member of a class now gone forever. MRS. THELMA HUGHES DEDICATION There exists on every campus one personality who serves as a shining light to the students. To this personality on our campus we now pay our tribute. To hundreds of MDJC and MHS students in past and present years she has endeared her- self because of her bright outlook on life. As a result of her teaching many are able to speak, read, and write on a higher level; but more im- portant, as a result of her daily life many are inspired to lead a better, more useful life throughout their years. She lives by and teaches her motto — Happiness is an elusive rainbow. Chase it for yourself and you can never obtain it. Tiy to give it to some- one else and it is automatically yours. Through her giving, she has become the very symbol of happiness to us who know and love her. In appreciation for her loyal service, her sincere counseling, her patient teaching, and all those little extras she does for her students, we of the Retrospect staff proudly dedicate this the 1963 Retrospect to MRS. THELMA HUGHES. 8
