MISSISSIPPI DELTA JUNIOR COLLEGE Mississipn DaiA junior college T MAY BE truly said that the experience of college is unique. For each individual it is origi- nal, novel, and unlike anything else. Combined with the wonder of it and the fear of its passing all too quickly, college life ex- erts a force upon the individual that will never throughout his life be equaled. Invariably a state of change, generally disciplin- ary, college is a going-away party and a survival course which leads into infinity. Our own ex- perience, exceptional, dear to the point of jeal- ousy, we explore, enlarge, enjoy, e xhaust, and later, eventually, remember. MISSISSIPPI DHLTA MOORHEAD, MISSISSIPPI EDITOR Sherry Mills BUSINESS MANAGER Gene Loyd 1 WHAT THEN, IS COLLEGE? College is the smiles of success and the tears of failure. College is old friends, new faces, old questions, new answers, old problems, new insight. Yet all our definitions prove in- adequate. College teaches one to reason, to wonder, to evaluate, to achieve, to desire, to strive. College is an era in one ' s life, a part of a whole, but a part that is indescribable in importance, in enjoyment, in suspense, in hope. Defying definition, college is a place, a way of life, a force, a fantasy; has been a dream, a hope, a choice, an order, a fear; will ulti- mately become a memory of benches, bricks, snacks, books, and friends; of lines and love and lectures, labs and cokes, the Trojan Shield at seven, the library at eight-thirty, and weekends, the football Championship, the lunch line, assembly, and finals, and cheering, sneering, voting, laughing, being a member of a class now gone forever. Not now, but from now on, this is college: a memory of our hurried, unworried, happy youth. nil I i ' Br. . 11 11 I Hi I 7 MRS. THELMA HUGHES DEDICATION There exists on every campus one personality who serves as a shining light to the students. To this personality on our campus we now pay our tribute. To hundreds of MDJC and MHS students in past and present years she has endeared her- self because of her bright outlook on life. As a result of her teaching many are able to speak, read, and write on a higher level; but more im- portant, as a result of her daily life many are inspired to lead a better, more useful life throughout their years. She lives by and teaches her motto — Happiness is an elusive rainbow. Chase it for yourself and you can never obtain it. Tiy to give it to some- one else and it is automatically yours. Through her giving, she has become the very symbol of happiness to us who know and love her. In appreciation for her loyal service, her sincere counseling, her patient teaching, and all those little extras she does for her students, we of the Retrospect staff proudly dedicate this the 1963 Retrospect to MRS. THELMA HUGHES. 8 What is college? A fantasy True to life, where friends are met and made; Where personalities are recognized and developed; Where talent and merit are rewarded; A fantasy to live in our memories forever. HONORS 9 FAME HARVEY GENE LLOYD Being chosen to the Hall of Fame at Delta is one of the highest honors that can come to a student. The faculty makes this selection on the basis of character as well as scholarship and leadership abilities and high moral standards. What is college? A ream coordinated, unified. Sometimes losing, sometimes taking penalties, But finally winning the championship. The cheers, the excitement of defeating the best— Whoever it may be. Achievement, Satisfaction, Memories— ATHLETICS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY FOR 1962 Things were looking bad after the first two games. We had lost to Pearl River 30-8 and to Itawamba 27-15. Then it happened; the Trojans found the formula — score. And score they did! The Tro- jans rolled over Southwest 41-14. Thereafter, they were unstoppable. Holmes was the next victim 40-28. Our Homecoming Queen, Gale Hartness, reigned over the 35-6 defeat of Hinds. Next it was East Central by the score of 20-13. Then Jones was thumped 27-13. This action left the Trojans in a five-way tie for the lead alongside Co-Lin, Pearl River, Per- kinston, and East Mississippi. This was given due attention by Mr. Bob Howie in his Jackson Daily News sports cartoon Now the Trojans had to really go. They came through in fine fashion by beating Northwest 21-12 at Greenville. This put Delta and East Mississippi in a tie for first place, due to play the following week. The Delta Trojans could not be denied in this game. Behind the hard-charging line, Buddy Hodges and John Garrison led the defeat of East Mississippi 27-24. This gave the Trojans the Championship, the first time in 34 years. This coming out of the cellar earned the Trojan team the title Cinderella Team of 1962. The Trojans reaped many rewards. Buddy Hodges, John Garrison, and Doug Minchew made All-State. Buddy made Little All-Ameri- can with John, Doug, Shumaker, and Lindsey receiving Honorable Mention. Coach Randall was named Coach of the Year in the confer- ence. But the Trojans and their coaches received the highest honor possible — Championship for 1962. 3 DOUG MINCHEW-G All-State TRAVIS SATTERFIELD-E PRICE HODGES-HB All-American, All-State TOMMY SHUMAKER-E All-American MDJC TROJANS STATE CHAMPIONS GREGG TINDLE-HB JAMES BELK-HB MOmtlS LINDSEY-T All-American BENNY STRAZI-G CHARLES CASCIO-E JOHN HOWE-C DAVID SELLERS-G BOB O ' NEAL-T JOE DEAN SHANNON-HB 33 BnXY McCOY-QB KANUV mou(;ks-hb MARVIN INMAN-HB FRED PIKE-HB DAVID SHERMAN-E EDGAK SMITH-QB PAUL POWERS-E BUTCH FANCHEB-E COACH JIMMY BELLIPANNI COACH J. High school is that segment of our education occur- ing between elementary school and college. And yet, thinking about it, high school is more — much more. As many people as you ask this question, that many different an- swers will you have. Basically, however, high school is people. And because high school is people, it possesses the traits of people. These include Friend- ship, Spirit, and Knowl- edge. IIGH SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL IS One of the greatest benefits derived from school life is the friendships formed there. Since we must associate with our fellow stu- dents in a school society, it ' s almost impera- tive that we get along. That ' s usually not very hard to do. School life affords us many opportunities to be with our friends . . . HIGH SCHOOL IS School spirit is like the inner works of a watch or the engine of an auto- mobile. It makes the school go. Sensed, but not seen; invisible to the naked eye, but present just the same, spirit is the motivation of school life. It comes especially as a sense of belonging — knowing that one has taken a part in the life of his school. f School spirit is especially felt on occasions such as Freshman Day. HIGH SCHOOL IS Now we come to the crux of the matter. After all, what is the purpose of attending school anyway? Knowledge — we come to learn. How much we learn depends upon the individual, of course. However, with the aid of our teachers. KNOWLEDGE through research, and the practical application of whM wo li.nc lonrnpH, we can become better educated for having attended high school; better personalities for having participated MR. AND MISS MOORHEAD HIGH SCHOOL TOMMY LEE BROOKS LACELLE LIVINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL IS FRIENDSHIP— ties that are formed for life. The passing of years may cloud the memory, but friend- ship lingers. There is the Who ' s Who con- test when students are given an oppor- tunity to honor their friends by bestowing special recognition on them. Clubs give students an opportunity to work with their classmates for the betterment of school and personal life. 78 FAVORITES BEAUTIES SANDRA HOBBS SANDRA HOLDER GAIL JONES SANDI RANDALL BILLY STINSON JIMMY MOORE HANDSOMES FREDDIE MATTHEWS RICHARD TENHET WHO ' S WHO MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Margaret Morgan Toby Wallace MOST STYLISH Freida Hughes William Clanton FRIENDLIEST Clifford Bowen Marsha Jane Harpole BEST ATHLETES Richard Tenhet Genie Kay Griffin 8x WHO ' S WHO Members: Sue Williams, Inez Jordan, Caro- dridge, Sandra Randall, Kay Jones, Yvonne lyn Mullen, Sylvia Bennett, Faye Tisdell Tisdall, Margaret Morgan, Lela Pierce, Beverly Fitts, Mrs. Malone, Brenda Dodd, Lena Pierce, Helen Smith, Ruth Ann Mor- Mary Margaret Jackson, Donna Turner, gan, Pat Henry, Gail Jones, Lynette Kent, LaCelle Livingston, Marion McClellan, Julia Faye Peeples. At what time other than Homecoming does one feel more deeply a sense of belonging. There is the excite- ment of electing the queen and her court . . . I the tension of the big ball game . . . the humor of Freshman Day. All of these and more add up I to what is known as School Spirit. ! Spirit doesn ' t climax with Homecoming, how- I ever. Throughout the year this intangible in- i fluence aids in keeping school life alive. There are basketball trips, tournaments, track meets . . . Remember this night? Thomas Sheffield, President of MHS Student Council, places a crown upon the head of Miss LaCelle Livingston as a symbol of her reign as Homecoming Queen 1962. The QUEEN . . . It is the practical knowledge gained from association with others. As members of a class we have opportunity to share what we have acquired. The quest for knowledge is sometimes re- warded by membership in organizations such as the National Honor Society. The greatest re- ward, however, is that the knowledge that we gain can help us in our search for greater things.
