Stanny Sanders Library Mississippi Delta Community College Moorhead, MS 38761 WliMiteippi Jbelta union Colleqe and Moonhead Hiqh School Retnoapect 1961-1962 3onewond From the Retrospect staff we present to you, the students of Mississippi Delta Junior College and Moorhead High School, this golden anniver- sary edition of memories. These past fifty years at MDJC represent five decades of progress. This year is the golden anniversary of a Junior college that was origi- nally established in 1911 as Sunflower Agricul- tural High School. Alumni from 1928 to 1960 may remember it as Sunflower Junior College; but we, the sophomores of 1961 will be the first graduating class to complete their entire junior college education at Mississippi Delta Junior College. We have experienced the rebirth and enlighten- ment of a new period in the history of this insti- tution. We have set high aspirations with the hope that they will materialize and open new fields of endeavor for our underclassmen. 7aMe Content Dedication Page 4 Faculty Page 6 Features Page 12 Activities Page 30 Sports Page 46 Classes Page 66 Snapshots Page 102 3 Dedication Through the years at Mississippi Delta Junior College and Moorhead High School, there has been one whose loyal service has been taken for granted much too often. We now stop to realize how much we owe to her. Her influence in the homes go wher- ever her former students go. Her classroom is truly for learning- - but, not only for learning what we find in the books but, also learning how to best adjust to the life that is ahead. Through her wise guidance and understandable counseling many have become reliable homemakers, community leaders, and good citi- zens. As a small token in recognition of the many intangible things she has so willingly given to her students, the Retrospect staff proudly and respect- fully dedicates the 1962 RETROSPECT to MISS SARAH MILLER. 5 3acultij. To our faculty, the golden link that connects our generation with future generations, we are indebted for knowledge. Their outlook on education and its place in our world makes us aware of our increasing need for higher learning if we plan to accept the chall- enge of today ' s youth. College and high school students have a faculty advisor for counsel at any time. Then, too, every staff mem- ber is willing to help each of us in the pursuit of our individual goals. We seek guidance from this group when difficult situations arise. We appreciate you, faculty, and your interest in the welfare of each student as well as your devotion to our entire student body. i tit LEFT TO RIGHT: O. W. Holems, Arcols; C. J. Those who received the honors are aware of their responsibility to you, the students. You selected them because you were proud of their achievements at MDJC and MHS. Excitement filled the air as the election dates neared. Everyone seemed to be concerned about who was best suited for what nomination. This was the week to decipher our fellow students in order to recognize their best qualities. Only the announcement of the results calmed the campus atmosphere. Congratu- lations are in order for those who were elected, so it is with great pride that we present to you the 1960-61 Who ' s Who re- sults in the permanent records of this feature section. SENIOR CLASS FAVORITES Ann Watkins Bobby Gibney FRESHMAN CLASS FAVORITES Barbara Corder Donald Vineyard Activities. Fifty years of activities at MDJC and MHS represent a wide variety of clubs for this golden anniversary session. To further develop students ' interests in school and in recreation extra-curricular activities are available each semester. Under the sponsorship of our superb faculty, this years ' s clubs have excelled in every area of student interest. Some are created to advance our knowledge in technical skills while others are solely for pleasure. The benefits that we derive from them, how- ever, are an essential element in a high school or college education. Students learn to lead when the opportunity presents itself, but also learn the importance of being a good follower. We realize that a strong leader is powerless if his membership isn ' t willing to cooperate fully in achieving worthwhile projects. Team- work is a must! Students this year have taken advantage of the golden opportunities they were offered. Therefore, we proudly present to you the 1961-72 activities that MDJC and MHS stu- dents have made a part of themselves. TROJAN [ I iS 5 • Mti m fori? What better proof of a well-rounded program of athletics need we present than this? In reminiscing the past, our records indicate that MDJC and MHS have produced a number of championship teams. Our baseball and track team for last year can boast over their victories as state champions in their respective fields. We believe in the idea of a balanced education. Develop your body along with your mind. An excellent coaching staff, a co-operative group of athletic -minded students, and an energetic cheerleader squad have furthered the advancement of this idea. To them we extend our heartiest congratulations for a job well done . 46 mj IC State Inack Champion FIRST ROW: David Denman, Wendell Bridges, Curtis Calihan, Malcolm Lowe. In some ways it was a year just like any other, but to each student and faculty member, it contained experiences and accom- plishments that made this one stand out from all the rest. To the freshman classes, this was a year for adjustment to their school life. To the graduating classes it was a pre- paratory step toward their future. With the passing of time, the echoes of our school life will grow fainter and faint- er. Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the fun we had, and friends we made. But as you glance through the pages of classmates you will recapture those moments and the echoes will begin again. B3I gH3S9S ft Sopfiomoie Colleqe Claud PRESIDENT David Holder VICE-PRESIDENT .
