Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1955 volume:

Like the mythical Janus, who could se( two ways at once, we face the future hope- fully and we look back upon our past with fond memories. It is the sincere hope of the Retrospect Staff that, in the future years, this book will give you a vivid BACKWARD LOOK upon the treasured life and happenings on the S. J.C. campus in the year 1954-55. To our noble Alma Mater, Would you pay homage due? Join with ours your hearts and voices In this tribute true. Alma Mater, we thy children At thy shrine bow low, Faith in thee and love undying Set our hearts aglow. To thy call our hearts beat loyal, In thy name we grow; Alma Mater, Sunflower College, May thy fame still glow. SPEilKliG OF C. and S. A.H. S. Once upon a time some Mis- siss ippians had a dream of an institution where young Missis- sippians could begin their ascent of the ladder of higher education. This institution was to provide for its students unexcelled op portunities. It was to provide a broad program of general educa- tion; it was to provide preparation for further college work; it was to provide a variety of programs de- signed to prepare a student for employment upon completion of his school work. Early in 1926 Sunflower Junior College was founded in connection with Sun- flower Agricultural High School, previously established in 1911. The dream of those men has come true. Today the Alumni of S. J. C. and S. A. H. S. are scattered throughout the United States in positions of trust and leadership. From its beginning Sunflower Junior College has achieved dis- tinction among the junior colleges of the state --in the future it will achieve even greater distinction. S. J. C. is not only a great center of learning: it is a place where love, friendship, and undying loyalty prevail, a place where the Sunflower Spirit is a reality, and a place where all people work together for a greater future and a better world. Ready To Go September 1954 and now the campus and Dorms hum with a new spirit and excitement which can mean only one thing - -school. Busses and cars bring more and more students into this joyous and thrilling school atmosphere. Everyone seems eager to invade the depths of higher learning and to come out on top. As the bell rings and another year of education is under way, crowds disperse with the promise that they ' ll return soon. Pencils , books , and thoughts, of a sort, are collected, and each student scurries off to his own particular destination. Yes. . . there ' s confusion, but Miss Rice, Guidance Director, helps greatly in the process of adjustment and orientation. Fish Pond A Good Game. Chemistry Lab. Library Assignments a. There is a smell of aut- umn in the air football season is speculated upon-- club presidents begin looking for new members--01e S. J. C. is ready to tackle with a will another year of studying, enjoying sports, working on school projects, and making new friends. S.J.C. IN THE DORMITORIES A gab-fest in the next room light bulbs all gone package from home time for afternoon nap borrowing money from the rich few good jokes firecrackers studying in closets after 10:30 alarm clocks going off just one big happy family. May 1955-- ' tis a beautiful day--the bright sunshine sheds its warmth on the campus and fills everyone with the joy, exuberance and the glad-to-be-alive feeling. Yet, there is a sort of hushed melancholy and quietness lying like a cloud over the campus a sort of intangible something that is only felt when some one is going away. This leave-taking and packing is mixed with shouts of joy and tears because some of us will never be students on the S. J. C. campus again. In these periods of retrospect and reminiscence, we forgive our friends all the petty charges we have against them. We forget the small jealousies that we have harbored toward the more fortunate students who we thought got the best breaks in everything. Yes, we have come to the parting of our ways. . . and we regret it. And so, GOODBYE, SJC. BOYD 16 umn I MRS. MARY E, ANDERSON Business and Commerce JAMES F.
