I 4 Leaders in the dignity of the noblest sense with the sincere respect, the love, the gratitude that are so rightfully theirs, we, the staff, proudly dedicate this 1954 issue of the Retrospect to our regis- trar and Librarian, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin A. Riggs, 3 As the session of 1953-54 comes to an end, I have a deep feeling of gratitude for the fine spirit and co-operation exhibited by the faculty and student body. It is this type of co-operation and spirit that leads to success. The students who will complete their work here this year may be assured of the fact that Sunflower Junior College and Agricultural High School will be interested in their future. For those who will return next year we shall anticipate even greater things of you. Sunflower Junior College ' s reputation for good will grow as you sing its praises. The increased enrollment gives evidences of increased services being offered by Sxinflower Junior College. May we ever work toward improving Sunflower Junior College. W. B. Horton, President MARY C. To our noble Alma Mater, Would you pay homage due? Join with ours your hearts and voices In this tribute true. Alma Mater, we thy children At thy shrine bow low. Faith in thee and love undying Set our hearts aglow. To thy call our hearts beat loyal; In thy name we grow; Alma Mater, Sunflower College, May thy fame still glow. As a beacon lights the breakers, Guiding shlpmen on; As a Mother of her eaglet. Thou new heights hast shown. Thou has taught us ne ' er to slacken ' Ere the race be gained; So to thee our hearts chant praises In this triumph-strain. We can now view even the hardest hours of labor with amusement. At the first meeting of the staff, I was chosen editor and Susan Locke, bus- iness manager. We soon learned that the business manager and the editor don ' t stand alone; for a publication worthwhile the cooperation of the st9.ff and entire student body is needed. We received both. We began our task of compiling an annual by conducting the RETROSPECT QUEEN contest. Much interest was shown in this contest because of the t en beautiful and deserving candidates selected by the classes. The contest was a close battle between Iris Brittian, college freshman, and Connie McDaniel, high school senior. Iris finally won by a margin of four votes. Next came the making of class pictures. Lamb ' s Studio of Greenwood made these pictures for us. Mr. Lamb, the students and the members of the faculty were very patient during this difficult period. Not only during this period were they helpful, but throughout the entire time required to complete the an- nual, they continued to be cooperative. To each one we want to express sincere thanks . A special word of appreciation goes to our advertisers; they are indeed loyal supporters of Sunflower Junior College. They are called upon again and again by numerous organizations from this school for donations and are always ready to give with a smile. Last but not least I would like to thank Mrs. Paul Ussery for leadership beyond the call of duty, and those staff members who have worked diligently. 1 would like to add a note of apology for the quality of some of the pictures used. I found that an editior, in order to meet deadlines, must sometimes print pictures- -a job for which I was unprepared. I hope you, our subscribers, won ' t criticize too -- severely. ll MYERS AND CO INC TOPCKA, KANSAS I, r
