Spirit 2 Honors 20 People 38 Daze 80 Organized 96 Games 128 Show 160 Events 176 Closing 192 How fine to view the sun’s departing ray Fling back on lingering, lovely afterday. The morn of summer glides serenely by And sheds a light enchantment o’er the sky. These, sweetly mingling, pour upon the sight A penciled shadowing, and a dewy light, A softened day, a half-concious night. Alas! Too finely pure on earth to stay, It faintly spots the hill and dies away. — Anonymous The Tribesman 1987-88: A Backward Glance Volume LXXXII Mississippi College Clinton, MS 39058 photo by Barry Sommcrfcld 2 As streamwaters eventually reach the sea, so do the moments that pass flow into the pools of years of which our lifetimes are filled . . . 4 As one day fades into the dawning of another, we are faced with changes some welcome and exciting, others unwanted or frightening . . . 5 The older we grow, the more we realize how few the constant unchanging things in our lives are 6 In response, with each passing day we cling a little more tightly to those cherished people, places and feelings that we have found to be constant in our lives . . . 7 8 The years we spend at MC-the friends, the laughter, the work, the fun-will become some of those memories to which we so tightly cling. 9 MC Students Celebrate America I Love America Day 1987 Even Uncle Sam can get hot! Alan Wright enjoys a cool red, white and blue popsicle. Tammy Mangum, Miss MC 1987 sings “God Bless the USA.” Lisa Ainsworth smiles for the cameraman from a local television station. 10 Nick Walters mc’s the lunchtime program. Students and faculty, dressed in reds, whites, and blues, enjoy the program while they eat a picnic lunch. Andrea Greer and Brian Hall Back Jack. The students at this table must have been first in line when the hats were being given out. Tom Washburn, Dean of Students, shows his patriotic stuff. 11 Homecoming Follies 1987 The third annual Homecoming Follies was held on October 23, in the Chester Swor Auditorium. The guys and girls in the service clubs and social tribes went all out in the effort to win bragging rights and cash for their club. The spectators, who filled the auditorium to capacity, were treated to six ten-minute skits, a song by Tammy Mangum, Miss MC 1987, and the crazy antics of mistress of ceremonies, Cindy Malone. Civitan’s skit “Wipe-out,” written and directed by Jeff Blackwell, took first place honors, and Laguna’s “Salute to the Working Women of WW II” won second. Mark Leggett chaired the Follies Committee, which was responsible for planning and putting together the show. Capucene Torrey and Suzanne Brand served as vice-chairmen of the committee. 12 Homecoming Pep Rally C-H-O-C-T-A-W-S Gooo Choctaws! 14 Home- coming Parade SHEA DUNCAN and Martha Simpson ride on Laguna’s first place float. HOMECOMING QUEEN Connie Cawthorn waves at the crowd. FRESHMEN make a good showing with their float “Choc’s Place.” FOLLOWING TRADITION, Nenamoosha rides on a fire engine from the Clinton Fire Department. 16 “MC’S GOT THE MAGIC,” Swannanoa’s float, took second place honors. KISSIMEE PLEDGES represent their tribe on the KT float. SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS combine forces to produce a simple, yet crowd-pleasing float. MC 1987-88 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philipians 4:13 V ‘ Ik Jeff Blackwell “If I had to pick out any one thing that stands out in my mind about Mississippi College it would be the great student body. We have one of the most talented and diverse student bodies of any private or public college or university anywhere. Time after time MC students prove they stack up to any students around. With the sound nucleus of students that exists, Mississippi College will continue to ex- cel in all areas producing leaders for the future.” 22 MISS MC 1987-88 Connie Cawthorn “As I think of all my memories of Mississippi College, my heart is over- whelmed with gratefulness. I am thank- ful for both the challenge of learning and the disciplines of scholastic knowledge. However, even more deeply I appreciate the personal growth acquired from the immeasurable gifts of friendships that share struggles, questions, laughter, tears, fun, and heartache. Lives touch for a brief time and we are enriched . . . thank you, MC, for these things alone will last a lifetime.” “Call unto me, and 1 will answer thee and show thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not.” — Jere- miah 33:3 24 Founders Award Constance Leigh Cawthorn i Freshman Brave-Hal Mayo Freshman Maid-Lisa Lewis T -M. It’s a rare commodity at MC. Going to bed at 3:00 a.m. doesn’t make getting up for that 8:00 class any easier. Whether it’s last-minute studying, waiting up to see who Dave’s guests on LATE NIGHT are, or just goofing off, many students consistently find themselves staying up past “bedtime. To compensate, they catch a few winks whenever and wherever they can — in the afternoons, at work, in class 82 83 Lobbies . . . Some of the rare places on campus where guys and girls can get together to study, watch TV, or share a pizza. The lobby phones are always busy, and if you’d like to know who’s going out with who, the girls’ lobbies are a good place to find out 84 Girls • • • It’s ten o’clock. You are cramming for a major mid-term, and suddenly your neighbor’s stereo begins blaring songs from THE EVERLY BROTHERS GREATEST HITS. You jump on your bed and scream “Quiet hours! Quiet hours! Quiet hours!” Ah . . . such are the joys of dorm life; joys of a fellowship that, wanted or not, is always present. Yet aside from showers that al- ternately stream a burning hot or freezing cold spray (with virually no water pressure), and those little nuisiances that manage to survive every form of pesticide known to man, dorm life does have its virtuous moments . . . 86 87 Guys . . . Who says they don’t put things on their walls? It can be hard to study (and or memorize one’s notes the night before the test) in Chrest- man, Ratliff, and Whittington. Distractions abound — loud music, fop fights, practical jokes of all kinds. But who cares? The fun times spent with friends will be remembered a lot longer than anything we “learned” . . . 88 Phones • • • What would we do without them? We’d have to approach that significant other in person. We wouldn’t be able to call Dominoes when that mid- night hunger begins, and worse yet — we’d have to WRITE home to get money . . . 90 Food • • • Junk Food that is. MC students thrive on it. Piz- za, chips, cookies, doughnuts, anything that’s sticky, gooey, crunchy, fattening or generally un- healthy can be found in huge quantities in the dorms. “Let’s go Krogering” has become a favor- ite phrase of those late-night snackers (who, by the way, have Mazzio’s phone number memo- rized) . . . 92 m Studying . . . Between the extracurricular activities and goof- ing off, it has to be done. Learning to say no to a movie or a ball game or a date is hard, but every- one eventually does learn. After all, the grades are sent to Mom and Dad . . . 94 -c. urrr haw i 96 SBA “I feel the most important aspect of the Stu- dent Body Association is the officers’ relationship with their fellow students. Football . _ m The Choctaws were pre-season picked to finish 3rd in the Gulf South Conference. We fell on disastrous times when seven exper- ienced quality starters were lost for the entire season — by the first quarter of the first game! MC played the remainder of the season. It was extremely rewarding ... for the coaches, play- ers, students, and all Choctaw fans . . . when we finished with a winning season (6-5), a 2nd place finish in the GSC (5-3), and a win over arch rival Delta State when we were under- dogs. Miles Hallberg, Darrell Hopkins, Ricky Barner were named to First team all GSC; Allen Hickman, Rodney Quinn were named to 2nd team all GSC. Our own Fred McAfee was named GSC Freshman Player of the Year. Miles Hallberg, Jason Womack, Allen Hick- man, and Darrell Hopkins were all Academic Conference. 131 132 The Choctaws won their third confer- ence game in a row to finish all alone in 2nd place behind Troy State. DSU jumped out to the early lead on a 64 yard punt return for a touchdown. This put Delta up 7-0 with over 1 3 minutes left in the first quarter. That was to be all the scoring for one of the GSC’s top of- fenses. The Chocs defense held Delta to 166 total yards, almost 200 yards below their season average. Placekicker Shane Stewart added field goals in the second and third quarters to provide the win- ning points. McAfee finished the special Thursday night game with 96 yards on 22 carries. Defensively Darrell Hopkins led MC with 1 1 tackles, a quarterback sack, on tackle for a loss, and one pass breakup. Both Hopkins and Ricky Barner led an aggressive Choctaw de- fense, and the enthusiastic fan support inspired the team to play their best game of the season. 133 Basketball A.irVOO’ )W ■mss yo 4 sW i 14 ttoim l r H J 5 1 r so I tOLlEGf % SSW ' 4 tut . • § 25 «7 rC’ ' a$51SM 34 College ► fllsibV 10 , .i ' IQL 1 TEAM MEMBERS: Willie Thomas, Kyle Haney, Deron Hines, James Wright, Bruce Franklin, Aaron Baker, Ben Powell, Dontray Williams, Bill Farley, Chuck Mainer, Scott June, Gary May 134 y Basketball The basketball team finished the year with a 13-14 record. Her effort earned for her the team MVP award. Katrina Bibb, a sophomore, led the Lady Chocs in scoring for the second straight year. Each of the young ladies on this year’s team made valuable contributions, and working together, they gained needed exper- ience. I — i Kissimee Rush “It was the smash hit of the year! Thursday, September 10, 1987 was KT day. Pink ribbons were everywhere — tied to trees, around garbage cans and poles, and the water fountain flowed pink. On every sidewalk, chalkboard, salt and pepper shaker, car and stairway you were sure to see an elephant. Kissimee spirit was in the air. Later that night, the one hundred and sixty rushees were treated to the grand opening of the Pink Flamingo Cafe. The Kissi- mees waited anxiously backstage for the play to begin, their fears diminishing as they heard the squealing ru- shees enter the auditorium. In the play the rushees were introduced to the life of a college girl as she leaves home, moves into the dormitory, meets her roomate, gets intro- duced to the MC cafeteria, gets rated at the Wall, finds her first love at college, goes to chapel, and gets her pink bid on Squeal Night. The special entertainment was provided by Robin Leech of “The Rich and Famous,” Mr. Dan Star, and an intermission of aerobics performed by Steve Holmes and Ted Burczynski.” — Laura Nations 1987 Rush Chairman I I f Laguna Rush “Rush . . . such a small word with such a big meaning! I never dreamed so much could be involved in those four simple letters when I took on the job as Rush Chairman for Laguna. Hours of thinking, sketching and writing dur- ing the summer finally began to take shape as all the girls arrived on campus for a new, exciting semester. The enthusiasm began to rise as we shared our plans for Rush 1987 . . . “We Go Together.” And we did just that — we worked together to capture the hears of the rushees as they sought to see a little of what Lug una was all about. As a take-off from the motion picture GREASE, faded jeans, letter sweaters, greased hair, and innocent pony tailed teenagers brought to life a whole new theme for the production. “We Go Together” attempted to convey the message that you don’t have to change ANYTHING about yourself to please others. True friendships come from loving others simply AS THEY ARE. Laguna takes pride in honoring this valuable concept in everything they are a part of.” — Susan Bryant 1987 Rush Chairman Swannanoa Rush “For some, dreaming IS believing. This stands true for the ladies of ST and their beaus. This past summer they all pulled together again to produce and present a rush skit for the fall of 1987. Written by Jeff Blackwell, headed by rush skit chairpersons Kathy Nichols and Karlene Wallace, and supported by members, the skit took many hours of prepara- tion and prayer. In their performance ST expressed the dreams of love and the reality of hope. They showed that even the poor in material can be rich at heart when the spirits of “Einstein,” “Bugle”, “Serene,” and “Dizzy” are used. That was just the beginning. Throughout the first semester they united themselves for other parties and outgoings. After pledges were accepted, special relationships developed such as big sis little sis relationships and those special friendships made with Todd Cranford, the new beau. Though the group is small in number, they are big at heart. Weekly meetings are filled with sharing, tears, and finally laughter. As the days go by, encouraging words are passed, and prayers are requested. This Swannanoa Tribe has faith in God and love for friends, because they know that some things are just worth that extra commitment.” — Keely Robertson 1987 Swannanoa Pledge Miss MC Miss MC 1988 Angie Gilstrap Fourth Alternate — Jammy Berry; Second Alternate — Kay Harn; Miss MC — Angie Gilstrap; First Alternate — Mauri Smith; Third Alternate — Ellen Veal Derby Day 1988 Laguna Wins for 5th Consecutive Year! 184 Spring Fever Day 1988 “Let the Games Begin” % ! . ha Spring Fever Day Commencement May 14, 1988 188 fc x r W % • lI. How’s life?” . . . These words coming from Dr. Dan’s classroom echoed daily through the halls of Provine and will continue to echo in the minds of those whose lives he touched during his brief time here. Dr. Dan Southerland spent his childhood days, in Norman, OK. He recalls countless hours on the front porch of his grandmother’s house there listening to her stories of the old days. He moved to Dallas, TX where he graduated from high school, and he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociolo- gy, history, and English from Stephen F. Austin State Uni- versity. He did graduate studies at the University of South- ern Florida, Florida Atlantic University, and North Texas State University, and finally completed his doctrinal studies at Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary. He has dedi- cated his life to the youth ministry and has served many churches as Minister of Youth, including Morrison Heights | Baptist Church in Clinton. He served the 1987-1988 school year at Mississippi College as Professor of Religious Educa- tion. Dr. Southerland immediately captured the love and respect of all his students who were shocked and deeply saddended to hear of his decision to return to a church in south Florida to serve as youth minister. “Dr. Dan, you taught Christian concepts not only in your classroom, but also in your life. The time you spent at MC was short, and when this publication is distributed, the great times we shared together will be fast-fading memories only to be relived in our hearts. When I look back over the 1 987-88 school year, I will remember you as the one who contributed most to my life. As you were there for me during all the stressful times incurred because of the production of this book, I feel it is only fitting for me to dedicate my work on the 1987-88 Tribesman: A Backward Glance to you, my friend and mentor, Dr. Dan Southerland.” — Barry Sommerfeld. Dedication Dr. Prentiss G. Cox “I’m sure everyone is ready for this little session of mental gymnastics ...” Students groan as Dr. Cox passes out the final exam and a tin of his own home- made fudge. The classes are hard, but if the effort he demands is put forth, more can be learned than the students ever thought possible. His goal is not to see his students graduate with all A’s, but to see them gra- duate with an education, and his greatest pleasure comes in “seeing a student work hard and do well.” Dr. Prentiss G. Cox did his undergraduate work at the University of Southern Mississippi, got his Masters at University of Mississippi, and completed his Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He joined the MC Biology Department in 1969 and has headed that department for the past eight years. He is supervisor of Hederman Science Building and secre- tary supervisor. In his years at MC he has also served on numerous committees including the Student Disci- pline Committee, the Graduate Committee, the Insur- ance Committee, the Student Personnel Committee, the Faculty Forum and the Publications Council which he chaired from 1984-1987. Dr. Cox is the Coordinator of the Master of Health Science program and does most of the advising for the Master of Combined Sci- ence and Master of Science Education programs. He is also a freshman advisor. Dr. Cox thinks biology is “fun,” and he teaches sim- ply because he enjoys it. He finds the caliber of students he gets to deal with here the most rewarding aspect of being on faculty at MC. Though this tribute is small indeed compared to all he has given, this 1987-88 edition of the Tribesman, “A Backward Glance” is dedicated to Dr. Prentiss G. Cox for his service and friendship to the students of MC and his faithful work with their publications. 207 In Closing . . . The purpose of this Backward Glance is not to capture memories of the ’87-88 school year. Your memories are in your heart. It is my hope that this book will serve to tease those memories in years to come and bring a smile as you recall those special times and special people that were a part of our lives at MC this year. A special thanks goes to our sponsors, Mr. Steve Cook and Mrs. Debbie Pierce for all their support and help throughout the production of this book. Thanks also to Dr. Bill Ellis, chairman of the Publications Council and to all the council members as well. Words cannot express the gratitude in my heart for you, Barry. You stuck by me all year long, and I will never be able to repay you for all you did. Thank you Kevin and Mary Moore for hearing all my complaints all year long, and Sandy, I could have never finished this book without all your hours of help that last week. Mississippi College, this is your yearbook. Forgive its flaws and imperfections (there are many I’m sure) and enjoy. — Melissa 208
