THE TRIBESMAN 1987 s through these doors that Mississippi College students ct their first shot at participating in •‘h. itseH a succession of many doors. Through Prayer, love, guidance, and often pain; young ilts at Mississippi College each search for their one special door. Some find several doors open hem right away, and we are amazed. Some never even try one door, and some bravely test every )r they find. Some ignore the doors opened to them, and stubbornly seek their own pathway, have watched helplessly as a friend tries blindly to find a door, any door. We have prayed with iend about to cross a brand new threshold; knowing that once they stepped over, the door lid shut behind them forever. There IS help along the way. Parents to instill, teachers to inspire, nds to enhance, and One always waiting to encourage the dream along. It is our fond hope that doors on the hill remain open to ANY who desire the challenge of LIFE. ' Thou art home. u art with thy friends. Thou hast found thy door in the wall.” — Friar John The Door in the 11 by Marguerite Dc Angcli. Jeff Blackwell, along with a group of upperclassman, planned a week of activities to greet the bright new faces on campus. Church services, water balloon fights, cookouts, and family-group meetings all gave the new students plenty of opportunities to meet their fellow students. Class officer elections. Clash of the Classes, and Indian Day ended the two fun-filled weeks of activities. As S.B.A. Attorney, Jeff Blackwell worked hard at running a very smooth Orientation program. The freshmen class was very go xl about participating in the events planned. They must have taken to heart the words of the campus officials who reminded them that they would get out of orientation exactly what they put in it. The 1986 Freshman Class did prove to be “SUPER FRESHMEN.” Jay Albritton, Vicksburg, proves that he is a “SUPER FRESHMAN”, sporting his beads and feathers and the ever-present freshman T-shirt. As Paul Smith hangs a campaign poster, other students gather around THE WALL for the usual 10 a.m. Friday meeting. Although a real Choctaw Indian would not have been carrying a Biology book, they would have dressed much like this freshman. Susan Walker and Kenny Redford walk to their third period class showing their newly found Choctaw spirit. Many freshmen join the upperclassmen in the Quad to enjoy the last of the warm weather and to watch freshmen who broke the rules during orientation pay for their mistakes. Rush started with coke parties, the Nenamoosha skit, “The Velveteen Bear,” and the ever-famous door signing. Finally squeal night arrived followed by a messy mud fight. Pledge week was fun-ffilled and very busy. It included: breakfast at 7:00 each morning, a Nenamoosha Circle Kjailhouse swap, Civitan big brother day, a spend the night party at the Pittman’s, a beau appreciation party, a slave auction, and the mys- tery date party. Nenamoosha emphasizes charac- ter development and leadership through which love and unity among the members of the tribe are achieved. — by Allison Trott 18 IC. Coach Rowanna Pope Dozier’s squad has five players returning from last year’s 4-20 team. It should be noted, however that last year’s team was the first for MC since 1976. When asked about rebuilding the program Dozier replied, “It’s just never easy rebuilding a program from scratch and it’s going to take some time.” The team will play 1 3 matches and 5 tournaments this year. All the players are close in ability and all are going to be relied upon, the most consistent thus far has been Dawn Edwards, a 5’ 5” fresh- man from Brooksville, Florida. She is quick and very strong, both offensively and defensively. When asked about this year’s team Dozier replied, “we have a really good attitude and that will help us. We have our work cut out for us, but there’s really no way for us to go but up. Although there were only twenty members, they showed us the numbers do not matter. The fun didn’t stop there. The freshmen got their first taste of “Mississip- pi Mud” on Squeal Night. We stepped into OKLAHOMA during Home- coming Follies and did not stop “headin’ West” until November 8 — fall formal. Christmas (and finals) came sooner than we had anticipated. We cele- brated the joyous season with our sponsors, Duke and Linda Barnes, by exchanging gifts. Second semester arrived and we took on new responsibilities. We still managed to have fun with Valentine’s Day. The semester seemed to fly by as we “Hopped into Spring” (formal) and found ourselves at the ever-popular and all-famous Derby Day. What a busy weekend that was! We were happy because we will get to eat breakfast first again next year. We closed the year by taking our annual canoe trip down the Oklahoma River. Although we were wet, we finally made it home tired yet in one piece. The grilled hamburgers at Laurie Ferrell’s house in Magee made our trip home worth the day’s work and fun! Before we knew it. Graduation was here and it was time to say Goodbye. (We will never have another vice-president like Lori Henry) As we looked ahead to next year’s Rush, we pondered the year’s events, good times and bad and were thankful for the unity and friendship in our tribe. iltfifitfiBtppt Qlulbgr (Elintnn, Above: Sponsors — Duke and Linda Barnes Row 1 — Brad Parker, Lori Henry, Kar- lene Wallace, Mary Keyser, Ruth Page, Darlene Hembry, Patsy Jones, Laurie Ferrell, David Hudson, Row 2 — Alan Wright, Tabitha Sumrall, Tammy Trostle, Kim Rodriguez, Kathy Nichols, Marie Bishop, Kay White, Jeff Blackwell 168 1 t J 169 KISSIMEE Group picture unavailable OFFICERS: Kimberly Tanner— president Lee Ann Koonce— 1st V. pres. Surely I am with you always, even to the end of the world” Matthew 28:19-20 Each morning began with an inspiration time. Meeting the people in the area along with working on the church b uilding gave the students many opportunities to share the love of Jesus Christ with others. i 177 PRIORITY m The BSU touring music group blessed many groups for their second year in playing and singing for the Lord.
