The procession was led by Freshman maid Tamera Butler, escorted by her father, Mr. Talmage Butler. Sophomore maid Dana Smith was escorted by Mr. Rory Lee. Dr. Joseph W. Branson escorted his daughter, Junior maid Joann Branson. The Senior maid, Gerri Chiles, was escorted by her father, Mr. Henry E. Chiles, and the Maid of Hon- or, Melanie Thompson, was escorted by her father, Rev. Julius Thompson. The crowd rose to a standing ovation as the court presented its Queen, Crystal Crosby, who was escorted by her father, Rev. Billy Crosby. The cheering crowd welcomed the court and the Choctaws streamed back on to the field for the second half of the battle. As the end drew near, the Chocs roared to claim a 42- 1 4 victory over the Oua- chita Tigers. Among the beginning activities were alumni and mother-daughter receptions and luncheons. The Parade proceeded through Clinton as the MC Marching Band led the way. Deco- rative floats portraying the Homecoming theme proceeded down the main street as attentive crowds observed the event. Woodsy the Owl and Swannanoa waved their cheery hellos. 12 13 MISS MC 1982 Laurie Lofton On Saturday, February 27, Miss Laurie Lofton was crowned Miss Mississippi College, 1982. “It was like a dream come true,” said Laurie. However, Laurie’s success took more than dreams. It took many hours of hard work and preparation. In July, Laurie had the opportunity to represent Mississippi College at the Miss Mis- sissippi Pageant in Vicksburg. Along with the honor of Miss Mississippi College, Laurie re- ceived a generous scholarship allowance. The four other finalists were first alternate, Mar- ietta Pace; second alternate, Cherri Marlar; third alternate, Allyson Barker; and fourth alternate, Shelley Martin. Intertri- bal opened up the event with the annual general rush meeting in the Hall of Fame room. Each tribe battled around the room with their voices. The coke parties began the next week. Each tribe set up displays and put on their best smiles as the rushees visited them. As rush drew to an end, each tribe performed their own version of a musical play. Nenamoosha led the tribes with “The Velveteen Bear.” Swannanoa came next with “Gone With the Breeze,” and “Best Little Tribe at MC.” Kissimee followed with “Making Your Dreams Come True.” The finale came with Laguna’s story of “Reflec- tions.” The 1982 rush ended with none other than the “BIG SQUEAL NIGHT” as the new rushees were thrown in the mud. i 17 I LOVE AMERICA DAY October 4, 1982 7:50 Raising of flag by Reed R. Pet- tey 7:10 Ice Cream “Social” on the Quad 7:30 Fireworks display — valley The 2nd annual “I Love America Day” unfolded on October 4, amid patriotic programs and a fireworks display. This event was coordinated by the “I.L.A.D.” committee and the S.B.A. This special day offered the M.C. students a chance to express in a very definite way, love for their country in the American Way. According to Mark Wilson, Committee Chairman and creator of the celebration, the event was held in response to the demonstra- tions against the U.S.A. by college age students who have a nega- tive attitude about America. The demonstration held at M.C. was very positive in nature, and showed the community, the state, and even the nation that some young people still believe in patriotism and are willing to show their loyalty for the American way of life. The event was covered by all three local television stations. Activi- ties included speeches in Chapel, and at noon, an “old fashioned American picnic” on the Quad. The climax of the day was the ever- popular fireworks display. FRESHMAN ORIENTATION Besides the inevitability of death and taxes, add the yearly influx of freshmen. Not that we’re not glad to have them, you understand — it’s just that it takes a whole semester to break them in right. But each year a valiant SBA Attorney attempts to work a miracle and educate them about MC in the mere space of two weeks. Cliff Michell had his “Cliffs Cops’’ and “Mitchell’s Muscles’’ on the lookout for transgressing freshmen, who though terrified at first, soon learned that nobody would kill them for refusing to bow and scrape to seniors. The usual activities took place right on schedule, culminating in the shaving cream fight in the valley. Upperclassmen and freshmen alike benefited from the spirit of comradrie that grew out of two weeks of harassment — all in the spirit of fun. Bet in 20 years, the freshmen of 1982 will get real nostalgic about that t-shirt that reads “Property of MC Pententiary’’ and they’ll remember those days vividly. But for the present, fresh- men just want to make it to sophomore status, so they can harass the poor freshmen of 1983. 20 CLASH OF THE CLASSES A day that always proves to be a great deal of fun is the day the classes clash. The scene of the battle was in the midst of the Quad, aiding in more participation. The emcee for this spiritfilled day was Tony Stringer. Cliff Mitchell, SBA Attorney, was the official score- keeper for the events of the day. The events included the orange pass, the water-chain race, Life-Saver pass, balloon volleyball, and several others. This was a day of triumph for the Seniors. 21 DELTA STATE WEEK MC 20 NE. La. MC stu- dents anxiously awaited the arrival of the Statesmen all week by supporting the Chocs with a pep rally at McDonald’s preceded with a pa- rade on that cold November night. Students showed their true colors by wearing “Beat Delta State” T-shirts and buttons. Look out Statesmen! 23 wh wozoo AMY GRANT October 5, 1982, the A.E. Wood Coliseum was the scene of the Amy Grant concert. The show was opened by artist Michael W. Smith, pianist for Amy’s band. Amy’s segment began with “I Have Decided,” and went uphill from there. In addition to the soft rock, and her “songs from the heart.” This concert helped the semester get off to a great start. With the anticipation of future events as exciting as the Amy Grant concert, the audience left in hopes of a fantastic year. 24 TRUTH With the week of Homecoming came many exciting events. One of the most exciting a nd entertaining took place October 15 at 9:30 P.M. in the Nelson Auditorium. Truth and the Truth band from Mobile, Alabama performed live in concert as part of the Homecoming activities. This provided a terrific opportunity to see and hear contemporary Christian music at its finest. “Truth” are, as one of their songs suggest, “called to a higher purpose— that being to sing praises about our risen Savior.” This proved to be a most enjoyable night. 25 The spirit of competition was very much alive on the 1 3th annual Derby Day sponsored by Delta Sigma Pi. All four tribes were fired up and ready for a victory. Each was determined to show their best talent and to secure a victory from last year’s winner, Kissimee. However, Kissimme regained its title of first place. Laguna followed with a close second. Not very far behind in third place was Swannanoa. Nenamoosha finished in 4th place. The Derby Day Court appeared during a competition break. James Marshall represented Kissimee and was crowned Derby Day Queen. James Rigney represented Laguna; Mark Courtney represented Nenamoosha; Chris Goolsby represented Swannanoa. 26 27 SPRING FEVER 28 I ! r Once again the SBA attempted to heighten spring fever by holding Spring Fever Week — April 19-22. The week was filled w ith activities and Thursday, no classes were held. Some of the events of the week included a watermelon cut and a movie, “The Goodbye Girl.” Thursday was the big day with a Fun Run — for those who enjoyed running. Also held were games in which everyone participated including the limbo, tug-of-war, the tra- ditional balloon toss, and the jello slurp, plus many more. The evening meal was BBQ chicken and ribs on the patio. Following the meal was the grand finale, Mac McAnally. This was Mat’s second appearance at MC. i 29 SHAKESPEAREAN FESTIVAL WELCOME ONE GUEST TO THE 5tl) Annual fjakcfiptare Jfetfttbal ftflabngal Burner FEATURING THE M. Happiness is ... in Nenamoosha ... red hearts and roses and Teddy bears too. With her colors of flaming red and glistening white, NT lights the campus with sparks of enthusiasm and sisterhood. Her flower, the red rose, gives a scent of inspiration while her symbols, a glistening heart and a Teddy Bear empha- size encouragement, leadership, and the development of personality and character. The songs, “Happiness’, “Peo- ple”, and “Everything’s Coming up Roses” all strengthen the message of togetherness and the bond of love with which she closes every meeting. The name— Nenamoosha — is an ancient Indian word meaning “sweetheart.” This year has been a very unique one for NT because she has unveiled a very special and vibrant quality of sister- hood and unity. Rush was a grand success with Rush Chairman Karen Vance, “The Velvateen Teddy Bear”, and the largest rush group. The theme was that in NT, anyone can become real and be herself. Cherie Alexander took NT to France for the fall formal, where they cele- brated “Christmas in Monte Carlo.” 73 1st row: Ami Duck, Denise Bourn, Genie Scoper, Lillian Wads- worth, Carla Morris, Regina Brown, Cherri Windham, Melanie Thompson, Paula Graves, Eva Lancaster, Beth Criss, Gerri Chiles, Sharon Deer, Linda West, Harriet Vaughn, Linda Robinson, Don- na McCurley. 2nd row: Carol Kemp, Susan King, Krista Ray, Lisa Broadway, Christy Taylor, Tina Powell, Angela McMullen, Holli Knighton, Trish Filgo, Melanie Haire, Gigi Hall, Tommi Jo Le- pard, Lori Purvis, Sonia Sewell, Rachel Garrott, Cliff Mitchell. 3rd row: Eddie Donahoe, Lucy Ann Puckett, Dawn Masavage, Laura Bailey, Lori Turcotte, Karen Majors, Ann Anderson, Anna Morgan, Joy Gore, Conni Franklin, Joann Branson, Darlene Dean, Renee Marble, Tracey Tyler, Margaret Puckett, Lee Kirk. 4th row: Amy Turner, Carla Smith, Katrina Higginbotham, Chona Davis, Vicki Purvis, Angela Traylor, Allyson Russell, Kathy Cor- ley, Rhonda Burnside, Jennifer West, Jill Lovorn, Patty Lewis, Sissy Moore, Robin Douglas. 5th row: Tina Thomas, Judy Greene, Lawanda Woodall, Kathy Jordan, Margaret Waterbury, Mandy Cowart, Terri Massey, Charlotte Purcell, Ann Hughes, Mary Kay Oliveira, Lisa Campbell, Kim Clarke, Kathy Cheek, Evelyn Skeen, Marty Stephens. 6th row: Laurie Menist, Janet Ellington, Deleslynn Lentz, Diane Dorsey, Tressa Walker, Polly Johnson, Allyson Barker, Clia Renfroe, Donna Phillips, Rebecca Royston, Karen Sandifer, Penny Presley, Lisa Bosarge. 74 OFFICERS: Lori Turcotte, Recording Sec.; Denise Bourn, Historian; Ann Hughes, Historian; Tressa Walker, Social Chairman; Eva Lancaster, Treas.; Paula Craves, 1st Vice Pres.; Melanie Thompson, Pres.; Joann Branson, 2nd Vice Pres.; Beth Criss, Rush Chairman; Ami Duck, Corresponding Sec BEAUX: Lee Kirk, Cliff Mitchell, Marty Stephens, Eddie Donahoe Kissimee, centering around their pink and silver colors, ele- phants and love, has been “making dreams come true.” KT had a wonderful fifties rush party and on Squeal Night gave bids to twenty-two girls. Student organizations at the College revolve around the various facets of collegiate life— academic, social, religious, and athletic. All student organizations are authorized by and operate under the supervision of the administrative faculty — student Student Personnel Services Committee. During the 1 982-83 year, some 55 social clubs, service clubs, honor and recognition societies, and campus clubs were active. It is the aim of the TRIBESMAN staff to produce a yearbook where all active clubs and organization s are represented. An approved campus organization may have the option of purchasing one-half page, one page, or two pages for pictures and explanations about its group. Charges to the clubs may vary slightly from year to year, depending on photographic costs. Organizational pictures are scheduled and shot each November. 94 PUBLICATIONS COUNCIL Front row: Janet Lee, Carla Morris, Marilynn Ashcraft, Judy Hines, Edward Akin. In the fall of that same year, she and the dietitian offered the first course in Home Economics at the College as team teachers. A curriculum for the major in Home Economics was formulated over the course of the next years, and the first majors of the department gradu- ated in 1950. Dr. McGuffee guided the department during it formative years and was named its department chairman in 1956. She was the only woman chairman on the campus at that time. The Department of Home Economics has continued to grow and expand under the leadership of Dr. McGuffee. Today, four major undergraduate degree programs are offered and three graduate-level degrees. Few faculty can boast of a long academic career at one institution where the establishment of a department and its steady growth has been carried through to its current state of development for thirty-eight years. For her uninterrupted years of continuous service to the institution, for her pioneering involvement in professional activities and for her interest in the College and Clinton communities, the 1982-1983 TRIBESMAN is dedicated to Dr. Frances Jackson McGuffee. 38 YEARS OF GUIDANCE I ADMINISTRATION 1 I i Debbie Alderman — Graduate Office Becky Ainsworth — Admissions Secretary J. The course of study in the school is based on the realization that education for business, business education, office administration, accounting, economics, public administration or marketing is a life-long process, and that the school can make its greatest contri- bution to the process by teaching the disciplines which underlie the practice of business. Details of current business practice, though important, can be best taught by business itself and learned through experience. The techniques, processes and procedures used in the everyday world soon become obsolete, but a trained mind that is disciplined, reflective, and analytical is never out of date. Therefore, the School of Business and Public Administration seeks to provide the best possible foundation for the development of trained minds and mental attitudes that result in a lifetime of education.
