Some come to MC just for the education, some for the social life, some to find partners Whatever the motives, our four years in college are the framework for the most important decisions and changes concerning majors, mates, and values. f r The changes we go through are sometimes called “growing up,” which most of us manage to do even though, like Peter Pan, we often don’t want to. - •• Individual change is reflected in the growth of the campus. There is a subtle change in the mood of the campus. A restlessness is evident, a questioning of old values. 10 w God . me the serenity to accept foiings I cannot change The Wage ° chan?c the th “! ' a,S1tewfed m t0 ktwW the d ‘ ef Throughout life, change is a fact-good, bad, or indifferent. Hopefully, the growth we’ve experienced here will enable us to adjust to life’s uncertainties. Campus Life I rrT J A ' V Don’t let it rain on my parade— or Homecoming 1977 Although clouds threatened most of the day, the rain stayed away to allow Homecoming 1977 to be a complete success. Circle K captured the prize for the best float in the parade. The pa- tio show featured much of MC’s own talented people. Best of all, by the end of the ballgame MC came out victo- rious over number one conference ranked Troy State. Freshmen Frolic «1 Freshmen orientation was a time for fun, fellowship, laughter and serious- ness. Freshmen were divided into troops” entitled Grant’s Army.” Each troop attended meetings, churches and other activities together. Big events were traditional ones such as dressing up as choctaws and the famed fresh- men talent show! The first few weeks the freshmen were uneasy, but in the words of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, “When I was young, I felt so small, and frightened for the world was tall.” MC was a new world— but with the help of upperclassmen and professors, they would soon grow tall through campus life. f 19 20 Classes Clash Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what di- rection we are moving.” This was the goal of each class as they strove to be the winner in the “Clash of the Classes.” No member of any class simply stood there— they moved with spirit in every event. Some of the con- tests were pie-eating, balloon toss, bubble-gum relay, tricycle ice-buckets, and the great passing of the orange. The last and main event— the tug of war— determined the Seniors to be the overall winner. The big decision of the rushees (Which tribe is really Me?) was complicated by the excellent productions put on by all four tribes. Beginning with the journey through the Land of Laguna,” the rushees were treated with a take-off on the Wizard of Oz. Nenamoosha’s “The Giving Tree” featured a talking tree and “Elvis”, complete with back-up group. Kissimee celebrated its twenty-fifth year with a rush party spanning the ' 50’s, ’60’s, and ' 70’s. Swannanoa’s tongue-in-cheek spoof of Gone with the Wind — Come with the Breeze”— ended with a scene out of Star Wars. All in all, the hard work put into the efforts paid off beautifully. 22 Fun in the Mud— or Derby Day 1 977 By the end of Derby Day, Kissimee had accumulated the most points and was pronounced winner. However, all the tribes put their best into the interesting events such as skin-the-snake, limbo, tug-o-war, the Best Mascot Contest, and the spectacular— if muddy— President’s Special. The grand finale of the day was a mud bath for all. 24 T .1 ’ I • Mississippi College BSU: Journey Inward, Journey Outward The Baptist Student Union is a stu- dent religious organization that reaches into all segments of the stu- dent body. The director, Bradley Pope, states, “The students at Missis- sippi College are some of the most loving, caring people in the world.” Through the BSU, students are given the opportunity for such outreaching involvement as tutoring at the Baptist Children ' s Village, entertaining at the Crippled Children’s Hospital, and the Methodist Rehabilitation Center, and participating in mission action teams. The misconceptions surrounding cul- tures of other countries are erased through interaction with international students. Inward growth is equally emphasized. Weekly Encounter meetings and fam- ily groups encourage students to dis- cover themselves and each other. Seminars and Bible studies explore the meaning of Christianity in tod ay’s world. BSU is designed to bring depth and meaning to the college student’s spiritual life, as well as to help de- velop lasting relationships. 28 This Is Show Business! The Tribal Players outdid them- selves this year with a double pro- duction. The plays The Barretts” and “The Rainmaker” alternated nights during the two-week period of their performance. Featuring sev- eral veterans to the MC stage and the debut of many students, the act- ing in both plays was excellent and in some cases could rival any on Broadway! 29 30 31 32 Let it Snow, Let it Snow— etc. After one exhausting day of classes into the semester, the arrival of sleet and snow added some more unsche- duled holidays to the week. However, with conditions so bad for traveling, we were limited mostly to the campus for activities. After all, there are only so many card games to play, and the snow on Mary Nelson Hill soon melted from abuse. In the end, most people were ready to get to classes— at least for the time being. 33 u Who’s ever have thought three years ago that B.J. Thomas would be singing in Ratliff parking lot? Meisberg and Walters, even though their name is hard to pronounce, remember, or spell, had no trouble producing excellent music with the added touch of an extraordinary fiddler-mandolinist. However, every one at the Concert was ready when B.J. Thomas came out on the floor. His medley of hits included such songs as I ' m so Lonesome I Could Cry” to “Hooked on a Feeling” and Raindrops Keep Failin’ On My Head”— the list is almost endless. He featured in the concert songs from his new gospel album which shares his testimony. Jennings- Replaced or The controversy raged strong this year over what would be the fate of this old, but undeniably charming dorm. For the time being, Jennings continued existence appears to be Uv dll vjf ■ ■ insured. ifi.HMi Who Says Nothing Ever Happens at MC? Anne Jones has been extremely active during her years here at MC, and in- volved in many areas of campus life. She is an active Kissimee, having been selected Ideal” Pledge, Pledge President, and Tribe Presi- dent. The judges selected Anne as Miss Mississippi College 1976. Added to Anne’s list of activities are Phi Beta Lamba, Civitan Sweet- heart, BSU Executive Council, Pre- view Day Chairman, Class Favorite, and Resident Assistant for Mary Nelson Dorm. This year, Anne was elected to Who’s Who, and served together with Bill Ireland as Co- Chairmen of Choctaw Round-Up 1977. Bill Ireland, besides having an im- mediately recognizable laugh, is equally known for his participation in campus life. Bill has been very in- volved with Civitan, having served as President and Secretary. He also has served on the BSU Executive Council, Senate, and as Senior Class President. Bill is a member of ODK, Cap and Gown, and Alpha Chi. Bill was a Nenamoosha Beau and Pledge Beau. This year Bill was elected to Who’s Who. Ill 1 5 Hall of Fame Lucy Bowen Selection to the Hall of Fame is made by a joint faculty and student leaders committee headed by the Junior class president. The students are selected on the basis of superior qualities of scholarship, leadership and service to Mississippi College. Hall of Fame Randy Hankins ' Founder’s Award Randy Hankins This award was established in 1974 by a group of three interested alumni and is to be conferred annually upon the senior who, in the judgment of a com- mittee representative of the entire col- lege family, has made the most signifi- cant contribution to the student life of the college in exemplifying the ideals for which the college was found- ed— specifically in quality of living, in leadership, and in service. But if they said that I Would have to choose between the two I’d go home, going home Where I belong. Sometimes when I’m dreaming It comes as no surprise That if you look you’ll see that Homesick feeling in my eyes. I’m going home, going home Where I belong. While I’m here I’ll serve him gladly And sing Him all these songs. I’m here But not for long. Sometimes when I’m lonely, And when I’m feeling blue. It’s such a joy to know that I am only passing through. I’m going home, going home Where I belong. One day when I’m sleeping And death knocks on my door, Then I’ll awake to find That I’m not homesick anymore. I’ll be home, going home Where I belong. 196 Advertise- ments ' W9W29S I r a 202 203 Senior Index ADAMS, CHARLES MATTHEW Circle K, Con- tata Choir ALLEN, JIM Psychology Club, ARROWHEAD Literary Contest Winner, Dean’s List ATKINS, NANCY OMA Math Club President, Pi Mu Epsilon V-P AUTRY, DOROTHY FAYE Delta Sigma Pi, Black Student Association, COLLEGIAN, Gospel Truth Singers AZLIN, PAULA KRISTINE Laguna V.P., Mod- eling Team, Homecoming Queen BAILEY, BEVERLY ANN Laguna Social Tribe Social Chairman, Nursing Student Body Asso- ciation, Soph, and Junior Beauty, Circle K Sweetheart BAKER, JOHNNIE WALTER Football BANES, RODGER C. Circle K Pres., Young Re- publican, Golf Team YATES, POLLY Home Ec Club, Alpha Chi, Art Club 207 I really can’t say that I am not glad that the work on this yearbook is over— or will be as soon as I finish writing this. It’s been fun, rewarding, frustrating, aggravating, and most of all a great learning experience for me— but enough is enough. I don’t feel like I really did justice to the opening section, or got across really what I wanted to say, limited as I was by space, time, money, and inadequate words. What I wanted to convey was the way our lives and the circumstances around us are constantly changing, and that the most important thing is how we react to the changes, good or bad. This year has been one of tremendous changes in my life. Most of the events were things I would rather have avoided. But I couldn’t, and by being forced to face some of the deepest pain, frustration, and hurt of my life, I have learned things I might never have discovered otherwise. Through my reactions to the things that con- fronted me and those I love, I began to realize that with God’s help, anything, no matter how difficult, can be faced. Now, when I look at the future, I feel a confidence and assurance I have never felt before. To me, being able to face life head on, without flinching, is what it’s all about. I would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank you’’ to those of you who helped me over the rough spots. The love that was given to me when I so desperately needed it was appreciated more than you can know. I hope I can return it in full. Special thanks go to Don Goodrum and Fifi LaFan for their art work for the cover. Mississippi College Library 208 V DATE DUE CAVLOKO fAINTCOINU. A.
