Some carry high the torch of truth and virtue; others will try to make you think they hate this place down to the last brick. But whether he is student, faculty, staff, or maintenance, the MC person is a tiny but vital facet of the assemblage that at any given time constitutes MC. mj m f |: Zsgt CAn ■ Each person will leave a little smudge of himself at Mississippi College whether he intends to or not And, without exception, he gets a smudge of MC right back. The social contact weaves a pattern for us-in the words of a contemporary songwriter, “a wondrous woven magic in bits of blue and gold; a tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold.” ■ c It’s just a cluster of red brick buildings (not designed for a particularly aesthetic view from the interstate), radiating a studious secluded atmosphere. From the Corinthian columns of Provine to the leaky plumbing in Hederman-Gunter, the brick-and- mortar side of MC speaks boldly if mutely. The structure of the physical plant provides the setting for growth and learning. ' f m 1 v . . . - kJO !• ffds?r ' coiAitro.. . i col. (Most of us are aware of that by now; everything from chapel to catalog to road signs is geared to making this clear.) Dedication to Mississippi College and pride in our heritage always has been and always must be regarded as an important growth factor. The actuality of being financed and supervised by a religious organization is no cause for students to compromise their pride; rather it is further reason to value the educational opportunities at MC. 7 President Provine 1895-1898, 1911-1932 President Lowrey 1898-191 1 Presidents of the College, not pictured Under Municipal control— Hopkins, 1826-1828 Comfort, 1828-1834, 1837-1841 Shepherd, 1835-1836 Elliott, 1836-1837 Campbell, Jan. -Apr. 1842 Under Presbyterian control— Campbell, 1842-1844 McLain, 1844-1845 Comfort, 1845-1846 Colton, 1846-1848 Parish, 1848-1850 Under Baptist control— Hillman, 1867-1873 Webb, 1873-1891 McLemore, 1957-1968 Nobles, 1968-present So MC is “famed for producing many a leader in church and state.” This phrase is not a pompous boast. It is factual; and the reason that students are reminded of it so often is that the standard must be upheld. If owing it to one’s self is not reason enough to be all that one can be, though, then perhaps such an admonishing reminder is purposeless. Granted, the past is dead. But the direction and progress of the past is very much alive. It is always the duty and privilege of MC’s present student body to mold and remotivate that direction. Dr. Provine and his “Quacks,” 1911 8 MC Rifles, 1896 President Nelson 1932-1957 Heritage doesn’t mean a thing if it’s not upheld. A retired long- time faculty member, when questioned about MC history, gave no meaningless statistical data about the school— she instead emphatically stated, more than once, “The people there now is the important thing.” 9 HISTORICAL STATEMENT Mississippi College was chartered as Hampstead Academy in 1826 by the Mississippi Legislature. In 1827 upon petition by the Board of Trustees the name was changed to Mississippi Academy and in 1830 to Mississippi College. In this same act the state legislature granted to Mississippi College the right to “confer such degrees in the arts, sciences, and languages as is usually conferred in the most respectable colleges in the United States.” The college was first coeducational. The first graduation class in 1833 was composed of nine young women. The female deparment was discontinued and in 1853 Central Female Institute (later renamed Hillman College) was established in Clinton. The college became coeducational again in 1942 when Hillman College was purchased and absorbed by Mississippi College. In 1842 the Board of Trustees transferred the college to the Presbyterians of the state. The college prospered under its new status as a denominational institution for a time but financial difficulties were encountered and it was turned back to its original owners in 1850. The college has been owned and operated, through a Board of Trustees, by Mississippi Baptists since November 11, 1850 when the entire college was transferred to the Mississippi Baptist Convention. That same fall Mississippi College opened its first session under its new sponsorship. The construction of the Old Chapel was the result of the first Baptist sponsored endowment. With the coming of the Civil War, Mississippi College sent a company, the Mississippi College Rifles, to fight for the Southern cause. Only 8 of the 104 returned from the battlefields. The war years were a great strain on the resources of the college, but devoted friends kept the institution intact and prevented its burning by Sherman forces. Mississippi College also sent out the 104th Field Artillery and the college band along with many other volunteers upon the call of Woodrow Wilson. Again in 1939 when Hitler and his legions were threatening the peace and security of the world, students left their books and took up arms in defense of country and the principles for which she stands. So in war as in peaceful pursuits, Mississippi College has played a noble part for a century and a half. Into all the professions and vocations and callings her alumni have gone and brought to bear their Christian culture and idealism upon the vital issues that would make for a better world order and the enrichment of the whole life. She is a member of several honorary clubs. She has served her social club, Nenamoosha, as an officer. Valerie has been a class favorite and a member of the Homecoming Court. She was the 1975-76 Homecoming Queen. Valerie is presently serving as Chief Justice. Mr. Anthony Saway has served Mississippi College as an athlete, leader and scholar. He is a Pre-Med major from Jackson. During his four years at MC, Anthony has been a member of the Senate, the Men’s Affairs Board, the FCA and other organizations pro- moting the school and the student. He is one of the football captains for this year’s team. Anthony has been selected as the Mississippi Touchdown Club Scholar Athlete for three years. Mississippi College is proud of Valerie and Anthony. Sm 15 Homecoming— The Anniversary Year Heavy rain and strong winds did not prevent the 1975 Homecoming Court from making an appearance at the half-time activities for the evening. “Homecoming— The Anniversary Year”, the theme for the day, was acknowledged by Queen Valerie Hewes and her maids. They were attired in colorful antebellum gowns which were protected only slightly from the downfall by their escorts’ umbrellas. The man who solicits and coordinates such support is Dr. F.D. Hewitt. During the past 13 years he has set up a workable alumni system, including the Annual Fund Drive for operational support. The nature of his job is such that he is not in contact with undergraduate students, but nevertheless his work has been of prime importance and we hereby wish to salute him upon his retirement. 43 We Wish to Recognize . . . Dr. Miley Dr. Gray Miley has served Mississippi College for 16 years. As the mitia chairman of the Division of Business and Economics, he has provided able leadership. Before its designation last year as the School of Business, the division under Dr. Miley had grown to become the largest division on campus. We therefore wish to honor Dr. Miley upon his retirement, and recognize him as the builder of our School of Business. This is the first winning season since John Williams took position as head coach in 1972, and the first winning season since 1969. The Chocs finished 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference standings. Three of the losses came to teams who made it to the national ' playoffs— Livingston (NCAA II), Henderson (NAIA), and Ouachita (NAIA). The Choctaws opened the season with high hopes as they traveled to Henderson State, the 1974 NAIA runner-ups. The Blue and Gold fought gallantly before dropped the designated CSC tilt 24-14. The Tribe returned to begin a two-week home stand against Arkansas-Monticello and Livingston. The Choctaws gave the guests from Monticello a hot welcome as the Tribe mauled the Boll Weevils 47-0. The Chocs were led by three touchdowns from Ike Nixon and two from Ezra Tate. But before a capacity crowd at Parents’ Day, the Chocs committed seven turnovers in giving a Livingston GSC foe a 20- 7 victory. The Chocs took to the road to find their first league victory at the expense of the Tennessee— Martin Pacers. With 5:48 left in tlie game, Tate scored from the one on fourth down to give MC a 14-0 victory. Mickey McMurtry, who came off the bench, was named “Offensive Player of the Week’’ in GSC for his performance, as he completed 16 of 25 passes for 176 yards. He also tied a GSC record by having ten consecutive completions. Cleveland, Mississippi was the next stop for the Baptists as they faced conference rival Delta State. The Choc defense, which had done a brilliant job in the face of an awesome Delta attack, finally weakened in the last quarter and dropped a 24-0 decision to the Statesmen. The major highlight of the season came on the chilly, rainy night of October 25. It was Homecoming night, and the Baptist Tribe proved their might as they halted the attack of the Nicholls State Colonels, the 1 team in the conference, 19-7. Down 7-6 at halftime, Barry McCay crashed through left tackle from five yards out to give the Tribe a 12-7 lead with 6:18 left in the third period. Throughout the game, the fearsome five of Larry Evans, Jerry Jett, Kirk Landau, Alan Hawkins, and Anthony Saway halted the Colonels opportunities to get the big play. Robert Hudson recovered a Nicholls pitch at the Colonel one with 2:22 remaining, which resulted in signal-caller Dave Mailer to sneak it in for the score. The other losses came to conference contests with North Alabama 41-14 and Ouachita 13-10. The remaining Choc wins came to non-conference foes Central Arkansas 35-7 and Mexico Polytechnico 83-0 in Mexico City. With the loss of seniors Larry Evans, Kirk Landau, Alan Hawkins, Anthony Saway, Robert Hill, Lan Leavell, Ross Holleyman, Mike Walker, Bull Baker, Bubba Hill, Kenny McKey, and Dan Prabucki, Coach Williams will be looking for his undergraduates and recruits to improve last year’s record. French tries to draw the foul. 55 I With only six returnees from the tall, talented Tribe team of 1974-75, Dr. Doug Hines’s 1975-76 squad has undergone a rebuilding season. James “Country” Hearn was the only remaining starter from last year’s 15-11 club. Hearn, the 67” scrapper who played forward last year, was moved to center. Guards 570” Mike Nienaber and 57” Larry Bibb, the other lettermen on last year’s squad, have been relied on heavily against tough competition. Transfer 6’5” Kenny Mullin has given Hearn extra help on the boards, and 6’0” guard Gary French, also a transfer, has helped give the Chocs the outside shot. The Tribe opened the season December 1 with an exciting 80- 76 victory over William Carey in Alumni Hall. But since that date, the Chocs have been finding hard times in getting the victories. The Baptists completed first semester play by bowing to Le Toumeau (85-83), Carey (76-63), and Belhaven (75-71). During the holidays, the Chocs traveled to Memphis to compete in the Dixie Tournament. After dropping the opening round game to Christian Brothers College 77-68, the Tribe settled for fourth place in the classic by falling to Union University in the consolation game 81-77. Hearn drives in for the easy shot. Mullin attacks the Lion defense with a 15 footer. 56 French battles Carey defenders for rebound. The Choctaws started second semester play by continuing to lose the close ones. Whitworth took advantage January 12 by edging MC 100-97. But the optimistic Chocs eagerly anticipated their second season (GSC competition) as highly-taunted Southeastern Louisiana came to Alumni Hall in the first GSC contest for the Chocs. Dr. Hines changed the tactics that he used first semester by playing a “ball-control” style offense. Crafty ball-handling by Nienaber, Bibb, and French enabled die Chocs to control the ball practically all of the first half and Chocs went to the dressing room at half 17-8. But the Lions roared back in the second stanza as they connected on 20 of 30 shots in the half as the Lions escaped 55-45. Key baskets by Mullin and Hearn enabled MC to stay with the Lions throughout the game. Mullin collected 21 points for the night, and Hearn collected 17. Gulf South Conference stats show that in seven games played, Mullin ranked eighth in the loop in rebounding, averaging 10 grabs a game. The Chocs led the league in free throw shooting, as the team connected on 90 of 119 attempts for a .756 percentage. With the shooting from the line, the Tribe also ranked seventh in the country accordi ng to NCAA Division II stats. With everyone on the squad returning next year. Dr. Hines is optimistic that the Choctaws will have a better season. 57 Lady Choc Basketball 1975-76 Front Row: Freda Craft, Clara Helms, Tesa Townsend, Glenda Holleyman, Connie Smith. Three of those losses have come to Way land Baptist, invitational tourney champions, and the other two have come to national champion Delta State. Guards 5’6” Rita Easterling and 57” Debbie Wiginton, forwards 5’8” Glenn Schmidt and 570” Glenda Holleyman, and center 571” Freda Craft have returned to start for the Lady Chocs. Miss Easterling helped bring National recognition to MC and Mississippi by being one of 12 girls in the USA to make the Pan American Games basketball squad which brought home the 1975 Gold Medal in October. Rita was also chosen as a pre-season All- American by Street and Smith Magazine. Miss Wiginton, a great shooting guard, helped reinforce the fact that the Lady Chocs have been one of the best teams in the nation at the guard position. Miss Schmidt was a Street-and-Smith All-American pick last year who was one of the most versatile forwards. Mrs. Holleyman, formerly Glenda Carpenter, was selected All-Tournament in last year’s Houston Invitational. Miss Craft was an NWIT All-American selection last year who has proven to be able to compete with the best. Top reserves returning from last year who have seen much action this season have been guard Liz Foster, forwards Connie Smith and Carol Bennett, and center Tesa Townsend. The Lady Chocs, ranked 13th in pre-season according to Street- and-Smith Magazine, have depended on three freshmen in forward Bethany Edwards, center Clara Helms, and guard Terri Shores. The Tribe opened the season with back-to-back wins over Whitworth (112-58) and Southern Mississippi (120-46). MC then hosted Wayland for a two-game series. Wayland, ranked 5th in pre-season, struggled to win the first game 85-74. But the Lady Chocs turned the tables on the Flying Queens the next day, and gave the Texans from Plainview their first loss with a heart-stopping 86-85 overtime victory. Wiginton gets in position for rebound against Delta State. Craft heaves a shot toward the bucket. 60 i Hollevman fights for the tip. Wiginton lofts a shot over the outstretched arms of a Flying Queen. Coach Ed Nixon will have a strenuous time in replacing the talent and intellect of Holleyman and Schmidt— both four year starters, who have been the founders of the Lady Choc tradition. With the material returning, the Lady Chocs will be looking for another outstanding season. The Lady Chocs placed third in the prestigious “W” holiday Tournament in Columbus. In the tourney, MC clipped the number one and two junior colleges in the country (Anderson, SC 106-87 and Temple, Texas 85-69) before falling to Delta State 86- 73 in the semi-finals. The girls sealed third place by thumping 18th-ranked Mercer 90-59 in the consolation bracket. After taking two weeks off for the holidays, the Tribe toured through Louisiana and Texas to play more of the best quintets in the country. In the first contest, Nixon’s crew beat Louisiana Tech 80-70. The next two games were thrillers as the Lady Chocs squeezed by 12th-ranked Stephen F. Austin 82-78 in overtime, and stymied 8th-ranked William Penn 77-72. The Lady Chocs completed the tour at Way land, where the Flying Queens took a pair from the Tribe 74-52 and 68-65. In the first contest played second semester, the Lady Chocs battled courageously from a 40-25 halftime deficit before falling 72-66 to Delta State at Cleveland. After 14 games, statistics showed that Craft, NWIT All- American last year, led team scorers with 12.8 points per game, and leads all rebounders with an average of 7.2 caroms per game. Craft also leads the team in most field goals (11 of 17 vs. Anderson) and most free throws (11 of 12 vs. Southern Miss.) Helms, who has played center during the year, led the team with most points scored (27 vs. Sourthern) and most rebounds (17 vs. Southern). Easterling led the team in most assists (8 vs. Stephen F. Austin) 61 Soccer Front Row: Philip Pierce, Francis Koschier, Bill Waltman, Greg Allen, Jeff Doremus, Roscoe Stribling, Bill McCann, Suresh Batra. Led by Steve Glaze and Jimmy Kolb, the Mississippi College Soccer Club posted a 7-2-1 mark for the fall season. The Soccer Club finished in second place among the eight teams of the Mississippi Soccer Association. In the regular season the Choctaws downed Belhaven (6-4 and 2-1), Jackson Soccer Club (5-2), Ole Miss (2-1), Meridian NAS (15- 0), Southern (3-1). They tied Columbus AFB (3-3) and lost to Mississippi State (4-0). MC was one of four teams in the state to play in the first annual MSA playoffs at Smith- Wills Stadium in Jackson. In the semi-final match, MC walloped Columbus AFB 5- 2. The Chocs fought gallantly in the rain and sleet before to Mississippi State, 7-1. 62 i Volleyball The Lady Choc volleyball team, coached by Mrs. Cheryl Moss, experienced a very successful 24-10 match play record. This was the best record compiled by the volleyball team since its inception in 1970. Major victories included the Belhaven Invitational Tournament and the Hinds Jr. College tournament which the Lady Chocs won by defeating suchofes as USM, Miss. State, Jackson State, Hinds, Belhaven, William Carey, and Gulf Coast Jr. College. The team is looking forward to a successful future as volleyball is rapidly gaining popularity as a competitive event for women. Front How: Pam Howell, Debbie Wiginton, Terri Shores, Denise Ditsworth. Second Row: Carol Bennett, Glenn Schmidt, Glenda Hollevman, Cathy Cobb, and Ginger Gandy. 64 i Intramurals Perennial favorites for the intramural trophy reigned supreme in most phases of the men’s intramural program. Striders and Team have been favorites to win the coveted overall award. Flag football was the only sport that involved team competition during the first semester. The Striders finished undefeated and untied to win the title. Toughest competition to the Striders came by Team (which lost 14-7 to Striders), Rebels, Hurricanes and Purple Poo Poo. ii Intramural Football all-Stars I I I ! ' 1 I r Sports involving individual competition for men first semester came in tennis, pool, and cross country. Marty Myers won the tennis singles over Danny Schulman in the finals. In doubles, the duo of Myers and Steve Caldwell edged Frank Faneher and Gary Wood. Dannv Walker won the billiards title ov er Robert Hill; and Larrv Whisenant edged out David Cox in the last fifty yards to win the cross country race. Competition got more intense during the second semester. The women participated in such activities as basketball, badminton, volleyball, and ping pong; while the men engaged in volleyball, ping pong, water basketball, basketball, softball, handball, foosball, weight-lifting, and track. Intramurals directors Coach Joe Walker and Mrs. Dot Nixon did an outstanding job this year in achieving the objectives of physical fitness, social contact, group spirit, and permanent interest in sports. The team (from left to right) is composed of Doug Taylor, David Owens, Vic Boyles, Jim Crumpler, Johnny Johnson, Tom English, and Tim Wallace. Not pictured is Joe Boyles. Coach Joe Walker’s Cross Country team had an excellent season, as the harriers compiled a 27-9 ledger over stiff competition. The only teams that defeated the Choctaws were the SEC powers of Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, along with Florida State, the Florida Track Club, and Troy State. MC was successful in dethroning the 1974 state champion, Mississippi State, by easily capturing the state cross country title run at Mississippi Valley State. The Chocs also finished first over a field of ten schools in the Louisiana Tech Invitational. 68 9 Vic Boyles, Wallace, and three Troy Staters constitute the All-GSC team. The Choctaws hosted the GSC meet and finished second behind Troy State in the five-mile course ran at the Waterways Experiment Station. Vic Boyle and Tim Wallace earned All-GSC honors. Boyles was second in the meet, and Wallace was fifth. Throughout the year, the harriers received top performances from Joe Boyles, Johnny Johnny Johason, Doug Taylor, Tom English, and Jim Crumpler. The distance men should have another outstanding season as every member of the squad will return next season. Crumpler makes it to the finish line. 69 TRACK 1975 1st ROW: Buddy Shephard; Terry Blalock, Doug Taylor, Jack Wood, Lawrence Funches, Calvin Holmes, Lee Dukes, Walt Green; 2nd ROW: Tom English, Jim Grumpier, Vic Boyles, Ricky McPhail, Kenny Saul, Johnny Johnson, Rollo Wall, Steve Campbell, Bobby Stewart, Mike Balzli, Coach Joe Walker; 3rd ROW: Grad. Highlights for the 1975 Choc track team included a 27-10-1 record for a .729 winning percentage. The tribe captured titles in the Delta Relays, Southeast Relays, Murine Reserve Relays, and the MC Invitational. They also tied Northeast Louisiana in a dual meet, finished fourth in the GSC, defeated eventual NAIA national champion SE Louisiana in a triangular meet, and finished seventh in the prestigious Cowboy Relays in Lake Charles. These seniors helped to pave the way in leading the thinclads to a winning season. There were three thinclads who captured All-GSC honors at the conference meet at Delta State. Charles Evans broke the conference record in the 880 with a 1:52.8 clocking. Freshman Larry Myricks leaped 25’3 Vfc” in the long jump in the GSC meet, which is another conference record. Junior Kenny Saul leaped 6’8” in winning the high jump to also earn All-GSC. 71 The thinclads broke nine school records last year, and 22 of the 27 members recorded personal bests. At the end of the regular season, MC’s Myricks was ranked 2 in the long jump by the NAIA and NCAA II. In May, he was ranked as the 8 college and university jumper in the USA by Track and Field News. These were also ranked nationally in the final NAIA statistical report: Stewart and Holmes in the 100 yd. dash; Myricks in the 220; Campbell in the 440; Boyles and Evans in the mile; Dukes and Johnson in the steeplechase; Saul in the high jump; and Waterbury in the discus. With a 20-13 overall record and a 8-8 mark in the GSC, the Tribe finished fourth in the Western Division of the conference. The Tribe was led by seniors Bobby Glaze, Mike Jones, and Steve Odom. Odom led the Tribe in batting with a .382 average, and was also one of three Choctaws who made the Western Division Team. Utility man Mike Jones, a .360 hitter, and outfielder Chris Michael, a .318 hitter, were the other two who received the honors. Michael anticipates a Belhaven pitch. 74 Sophomore Mike Rice put MCon the map in the national ranks. With many lettermen returning for the 1976 season. Coach Nixon, selected Coach of the Year in the Western Division of the GSC, is optimistic that the Tribe will have a good season in 1976. 75 Men’s Tennis David Newman, Johnny Barnett, Steve Yawn, Darvl Newman. Coach Terry McMillan’s tennis team scheduled some of the toughest competition in the South in order to prepare themselves for the GSC tournament at Nicholls State. The Choctaws, who finished fourth in the conference tournament last year, have faced such powerhouses as Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Millsaps, Belhaven, Southern, and Southeastern Louisiana. The Tribe will lose the services of Johnny Barnett and Ricky Pennebaker. But with the return of David Newman ( 1 in singles), Daryl Newman, and Steve Yawn, the Choctaws look forward to next season. 76 Newman backhands a shot while Barnett watches. Women’s Tennis Lucy Bowen, Linda Rasberry, Kris Azlin, and Marty Clawson. Not pictured: Charlotte Pierce, Kim Kitchings, and Connie Godby. The Lady Chocs tennis team has done well during the fall season as they finished with a 3-2 record. Their defeats came at the hands of a powerful Alabama team and rival Mississippi State. Martv Clawson, Kris Azlin, and Connie Godby have been counted on heavily for the Lady Chocs’ spring season. They faced such foes as: William Carey, Belhaven, USM, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Louisiana Tech. The girls also participateed in the Women’s State Tournament at Starkville. Coach Dot Nixon believes that with everyone returning for the next season, Lady Choc tennis will look much brighter in the future. Clawson prepares to return a volley. ft 77 CHEERLEADERS Headed by Suzanne Blackwell, the Choctaw cheerleaders kept Mississippi College spirits high with the exaltant chants and yells that boosted our team to victory. America, The Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates The dreams of a law school at Mississippi College have been in existence for the last twenty to twenty-five years. Almost twenty- five years ago Dr. D.M. Nelson addressed the Mississippi Baptist Convention and predicted that MC would eventually boast of a qualified law school. Since 1930, the Jackson School of Law has served in meeting the needs for legal education in the central portion of the State. Over the years students have studied under a distinguished faculty. Mississippi College again began looking at the possibility of a School of Law in 1969. Studies were made, by the College and by others independent of the College, with each reaching the same conclusion— the need for a law school in the area of the State Capitol of Jackson was the logical institution to operate such a school. Now, with the purchase by Mississippi College of the Jackson School of Law with its tradition of excellence and support of the legal profession, the dreams of many have come true. The road to success of this new adventure will be paved by the prayers and support of alumni and friends of both institutions. i k LAW SCHOOL OFFICE 138 .. Mississippi College is meeting a need. Mississippi College, and indeed the church in whose name it serves, came in to being in response to human needs. There is a pressing need for ethical and effective lawyers; and these lawyers should be men and women who believe in the justice of human law and in the supreme virtue of God’s law. “A Bible and a newspaper in every house, a good school in every district . . . are the principal support of virtue, morality and civil liberty.” Benjamin Franklin f i j i i i 139 a FACULTY Ron Alexander Asst.
