GOD IS LOVE To These Who Have Given So Much Dr. Sarah Rouse “There’s something so special about her. All I can say is that her life has touched mine and somehow her sweet Christian testimony has drawn me closer to the One she loves so dearly. I’ll never be able to repay her for sharing her beautiful life with me.” Graduate of 1974 “The exciting experience of teaching at Mississippi College constantly confirms my belief that my being here is the will of God for my life. The opportunity to help maintain the high academic and Christian standards, which form the basic purposes of the college, is a challenge to me, and is an ever-present reminder of my responsibilities and privileges as a member of the Mississippi College faculty. Cooperation, trust, friendliness and the excellent rapport between the administration and faculty, administration and students, and faculty and students have helped to create a campus atmosphere in which teaching is a genuine pleasure.” Dr. Sarah Rouse 16 i We Dedicate the 1974 Tribesman ly he Is, an of he on us tse Mrs. Sue Lipsey “Teaching at Mississippi College means working with congenial friends, cooperating students, and graduates who go all over the world with zeal, compassion, and loving-kindness. Both in their stay and returning, they enrich us with their knowledge, their joy and interest in their work, their accomplishments. They are a stabilizing influence. Mrs. Sue Lipsey “Even though Mrs. Lipsey and I will probably never see each other again, she will always be the fondest memory I have for MC. I know that because of her, my life has been enriched with knowledge and a new love for life that she has. To me, Mrs. Lipsey will always be the lady and professor that she is now. The respect and admiration that many have for her will be dedication enough for a lady that has enriched so many with her own life.” Graduate 1974 17 We Pay Special Tribute To Our Dean Of Students DR. CHARLES SCOTT The Tribesman staff, along with all on campus, wish to express sincere thanks to a great Dean of Students, Dr. Charles W. Scott. Dr. Scott is retiring from his position as Dean, but will retain a full professorship in education. We are grateful to Dr. Scott for his tremendous influence as a Christian teacher and leader. We feel privileged to have such a man on campus. The experience he has gained during his 25 years of service to MC has never failed to help and inspire those who needed it. The Choctaws ended the 1973 football season with a 6-4 record. Just a look at the record does not reveal the actual play of the season. Fans who traveled to the games and came to Robinson Field saw it as a season of great playing. Although the Choctaws were soundly defeated a few times, several bitter defeats by less than three points each turned a possible winning season into a losing one. This first year in the Gulf South Athletic Conference saw Choctaw wingback, Robert Hill, set a GSC record for most passes caught in a season. With 54 catches for 754 yards and 6 touchdowns, Hill put himself and Mississippi College in the annals of Gulf South history. The season opened with the Choctaws traveling to Arkedelphia, Arkansas to face Henderson State. The Chocs carried a 7-0 lead into the fourth quarter. The Reddies exploded in the fourth with 2 TD’s and a field goal to defeat the Choctaws 17-7. Gladney made the sole MC touchdown with a 50-yard interception run. The next 2 games ended in defeats to Southern State of Arkansas and Delta State. The MC team held a 20-0 lead at halftime and let it slip out of their hands by 2 points for a final score 28-26. Booger Red throws Lion for a FSU loss. 96 The next week the Choctaws met the Statesmen of Delta State College in a thoroughly exciting game. Delta State led 14-10 at halftime and after a grueling second half, the C hoctaws had come within 1 point of the Statesmen to give DSC a 14-13 win. The Choctaws traveled to Florence State on Oct. 6 where the team snapped its losing streak to spoil the FSU Homecoming Festivities; they downed the Lions 26-7. This was the 2nd GSC game for the tribe. That afternoon, players, Hill, Wallis, Nixon and Holleyman, ran for the MC touchdowns. October 13 was a homecoming of sorts. Not the annual homecoming, but a homecoming for Head Football Coach, John Williams, when the MC team traveled to Biloxi to meet Nicholls State of Louisiana. With Biloxi native, Mike Wallis calling the signals, the Chocs pounded the Colonels 21-7 for a second Gulf South victory. The next week the Choctaws came home to a defeat by the Livingston State University Tigers. The Tigers proved to be one of the roughest teams of the grid season, holding MC to a mere field goal by Danny Powell while scoring 24 points. Next week was homecoming and an overflow crowd saw the Chocs shut out the University of Arkansas 21-0. Touchdowns by Holleyman, Hill, and Parker and three kicks by Powell climaxed the annual homecoming activities. The final weekend in November saw the Chocs go against their fourth Arkansas team of the season. The Choctaws traveled to Conway, Arkansas, to battle the Bears of State College of Arkansas. The Bears led in scoring through the game, but it was another of those slim losses with the final score MC 24 and State College 27. The next week was a repeat of the Delta State game with Ouachita University went back to Arkansas with a 14-13 win over the Chocs. The last game of the season proved to be the most exciting. With five seconds remaining in the game, Barnes fired to Hill for the score. Pandemonium broke out and the 73 season ended with a record of playing of which they could be proud. Mississippi College’s premiere year in the Gulf South Conference proved to be very exciting. Also making a premiere was Dr. Doug Hines who joined the MC coaching staff as head basketball coach in the fall semester. Dr. Hines took the cagers and taught them a new kind of ballgame — a type that had not been played at MC in many years. The season opened dimly with a defeat to the University of Arkansas-Monticello. The Tribe showed promise with excellent players such as James Hearn who led the scoring for MC with 16 points. The Choctaws then went against Belhaven and William Carey for two consecutive wins. Willie Price and James Hearn were high scorers for the Chocs with 28 and 26 points respectively. The next five games were good for only one win when the Chocs got revenge for the season opener by defeating Arkansas-Monticello 54-47. Sammy Blackmon and Buck French emerged to joip the list of top scorers. The first Gulf South Conference contest was against the University of Tennessee-Martin. The MC victory launched the Chocs into the GSC as winners. The second game of the Gulf South series was a win over Delta State. This was followed by victories over other conference teams that included Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana University. By this time MC was in a multiple tie for the conference leadership. A loss to Northwestern State, Louisiana knocked the Chocs from first but they held on to a close second in conference play with wins over Delta State, Troy State, and Jacksonville State. I think M( r-j, rfavnt EMI L jy L U ? ' ■ ! CtV , l r, m iiai Student Body Association Scott Cook, President MY YEAR AS SBA PRESIDENT It seems such a short time ago that the induction ceremonies occurred in which I accepted the responsibilities of the presidency of the Student Body Association of our college. Yet, the many events of the intervening months have filled that time span with significance. Of the year as a whole, let me say generally that the routine duties assigned to your SBA officers by the constitution and by tradition have run well, thanks to very wonderful cooperation of the members of our Executive Council. To those routine responsibilities we have added this year some new services to facilitate student life; our “Thoughts For the Week” board, a new news board to announce and emphasize coming events effectively, and the upgrading of our sound equipment. Though the meetings of our Student Senate may normally be regarded as one of the routine activities of your SBA, the functioning of the Senate this year has been outstanding in its regularity, responsibility, and achieve- ment; and the greater credit for this outstanding year of our Student Senate is attributable to our SBA Vice President, Roy Fountain, who has given remarkable leadership to that group. In the year-long conduct of SBA affairs, your officers have been almost inexpressibly grateful to two members of the administrative staff of the college for their tremendous help: Dr. Scott, Dean of Students, who has given priceless guidance in every instance in which we have called upon him, and Jan Hederman, Director of Student Activities, whose truly beautiful spirit of understanding and helpfulness made our responsibilities easier and happier. But, more than anything else characterizing this session’s SBA activities has been the very wonderful spirit of understanding, effort, and cooperation that has permeated those activities and has added a very real glow of happiness to the year. In a more personal way, what has been my own reaction to this year of having the privilege of being your SBA president? Let me say simply, sincerely, and with humble gratitude: this year has been the greatest challenge of my life thus far, and I have never for an hour ceased to remember that only my best in thought, planning, and effort would be worthy of the student body of Mississippi College and its confidence in choosing me for leadership. From the very beginning of my official responsibilities, I gave much time, thought, and prayer to trying to determine my chief hopes for our student body of the 1973-1974 session. Some of those hopes have been these: 1) a smooth and happy operation of the routine duties of the SBA with the widest possible participation of our student body; 2) the best lyceum series ever; 3) a strong sense of Christian friendship and understanding throughout our student body; 4) a student-body-wide realization that, even though Mississippi College is a Christian school, we as students not take for granted that individual spiritual development would occur automatically, but that spiritual maturity must come through conscientious, intelligent, individual desire and effort. Even more personally, let me say that for me the year has been one of continuing self-examination, a realization of my own need for greater spiritual growth, for deeper and wider understanding of people, and for a growing appreciation and respect for every individual in our college. The challenge has led me to the discovery of some inadequacies and needs, to a weeding out of some weaknesses, and to the cultivation of some new strengths. Quite naturally, there have been times of “headache” along the way, but those times have been completely offset by the deep joy and gratification of working with my wonderful fellow students in a service capacity. To capsule the year for myself and the student body, I can say that, though there have been inevitable shortcomings and times of under-achievement, the year as a whole has been a good and happy one. To whom and what may the really good things of this year be attributed? I say with the deepest sincerity and gratitude that five words from a religious folk song of our day give the answer: “To God Be The Glory!” Scott Cook, SBA President. 122 Tom Pearson, Attorney George Estes, Chief Justice Lawana Mims, Secretary Treasurer 123 Senate: Row 1: Jeanne Smith, Leigh Bostick, Walter Ferrell, Shannon Shelton, Steve Graves, Alice Gong, Mark Bullock. In March, they had an annual campout with the boys from their Big Brother program at the Children’s Village. In April they attended a convention for the LA-MS-TN District of Circle K. The club’s major activity was their money-raising drive for Multiple Sclerosis. They had an education booth in the Student Center to pass out pamphlets. With roadblocks and other means, the club raised $700 to contribute to this worthy cause. 155 Intertribal Council Connie Rice’s dance illustrated KT’s rush party theme — “Love — Kissimee Style. Intertribal had an extremely busy rush season. Coke parties, rush parties, Preference Day, and Squeal Night kept the girls working hard. But everything went off smoothly and happily, with much fun included for all. Well, our motto is “To be lovely within so as to be lovely without;” that explains a lot of it. It’s a group of girls helping each other to be lovely people, and all that involves — worshipping God together, serving others together, having fun together and just helping each other find her true self. As Margery Williams expressed it in a little book that has become so dear to us, “because once you are real, you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” 162 NT Seniors: Judy Fortenberry, Lucy Parks, Pat Hannaford, Mary Jane Welch, Mary Lee Jones, Gail Blanchard, Donna Brown, Sharon Shumate, Gail Reese, (standing) Judy Gore, Becky Touchstone, Viki Burnett. Their close fellowship and happy services show what it really means to follow the Golden Rule. Swannanoa girls try to develop grace, poise, and personality, but they also believe in involvement and concern for others. The friendliness of the ST girls is the link that holds the tribe together.” ■ 165 Even from the beginning of the school term, MC’s clubs have been busy with various activities. During the first few weeks, events centered around the freshman class. Fine people like Mary Watson entertained them at coffeehouses. A coke party was held at Dr. and Mrs. Nobles’s home especially for them. Freshmen began to work together, painting signs and joining in the Choctaw spirit! And when Intertribal rush began! Well, the girls began to look like teddy bears, mice, owls, and elephants. Those lucky freshmen with cars soo n learned where and where not to park their vehicles. All in all, it was a thrilling fall for the freshmen, thanks to the clubs on campus. 166 168 The freshmen weren’t the only ones having fun! Such things as Squeal Night kept the upper- classmen girls busy but happy. Other events rolled around that took everyone’s planning, such as High School Day. It doesn’t take much to keep MC students satisfied. Little things like turtles or twins just brighten every- one’s days! So, the year passes quickly. The schedule is still filled with activ- ities — no slacking up here! P.E. classes must be met, and backdrops for plays still have to be painted, but life even then isn’t too bad. How could it be when such great programs are staged in Nelson! The Parade of Favorites, sponsored by the Tribesman near Christmas, was so exciting. Six-year- old David Hickman’s performance of “The Little Drummer Boy” was heart- warming. Then the big event of Intribal’s fall came — Christmas parties! Whether it was a hayride or a formal, the fellow- ship and fun was super-fantastic! To start off the new second semester, Andrae Crouch and the Disciples gave a concert that had standing-room only. Rarely has MC enjoyed such an exper- ience as this performance. With such a year as this, MC’s organizations can feel that it has been profitable and just plain wonderful! 170 “Working at Mississippi College affords a double pleasure, for the students and fellow employees rank among the finest people in the world. I find it ideal.” An Administrator. ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, AND STAFF 173 The Finest President Anywhere Dr. Lewis Nobles YOU AND YOUR TRIBESMAN I would hope most sincerely that a copy of the 1974 Tribesman will become a cherished possession of every student who attended Mississippi College during the 1973- 74 session. The central focus of a college yearbook is student life. Students alive with their widely varying interests, activities and relationships are portrayed in the college setting in such ways as will assist each of you throughout the coming years to recall vividly with pleasant memory these days of collegiate life. I am grateful that in preceding years Tribesman staffs have diligently sought to produce annuals of such quality that students have been able to look forward to perusing them with pride in the years that are yet to come and be glad for their children and grand- children to do the same. I know that the same is true with respect to this 1974 issue of the Tribesman — and so may it be with future years of the Tribesman as they depict a vigorous, growing Mississippi College, with an optimistic future always opening up before it and for those who choose to make MC the college of their choice. Strange Professor William E. Strange, longtime teacher of mathematics at MC died September 1, 1973, while attending a football game at the Oxford campus of the University of Mississippi. One unsung area of his service was his work with the Board of Ministerial Education. For a number of years he had served as secretary-treasurer for that Board, operating its student housing, counseling on money matters with young ministers and disbursing scholarship money as it was available. “Mr. Strange taught me to think critically and brought subtle humor into the classroom. His concern for others will have a lasting influence on those who knew him.” Math Student Miss Jennifer Reynolds Senior Jennie Reynolds died October 28, 1973, as a result of an automobile accident. She was a music education major and planned a lifetime of service in the ministry of music. Jennie was a member of the Marching Band and the Nenamoosha Social Tribe. The following was written in memorial to Jennie by Mrs. Douglas Little: “Jennie was the beauty and grace of the perfect rose and oh so much more - love for her fellow man, be he friend or casual acquaintance - talent of so wide a span, one wondered how she possessed so many and so much - energy never ceasing as she became involved more and more along so many divergent paths - love of life - for no one ever enjoyed and loved life to the fullest any more than she - laughter - for happiness and loving care were her very nature - student eternal and a well-disciplined one in seeking all the beautiful foundations of knowledge for living gentle and concerned with and for all about her - perfection in her attainments - a lady in her very being and ways a child of God as exemplified by her every way everyday.” ] “It wasn’t the days in Jennie’s life that counted, but it was all that life she packed into her days. Jennie loved without expecting to be loved, gave without expecting anything in return, and served without expecting to be served.” Fellow Classmate 208 Id Dedication Dr. J.W. Lee Dr. J.W. Lee, nationally recognized leader in education, died unexpectedly at his home in Jackson on November 4, 1973. His tenure at MC was interrupted by one year of service with the A and 1 Board in 1960- 61. He then returned to campus as Chairman of the Division of Education and Psychology, serving in this capacity until 1967 when he was named Dean of the Graduate School. During the past year he had resumed the position as Chairman of the Division. “J.W.’s life has been most meaningful to me. As a brother, he was everything that I could expect in one. J.W. and I worked closely together in the Graduate Office for four years here at MC and I respected him as my superior. Among other things he helped me gain the self-confidence which I didn’t have. I have missed him dearly, but the precious memories of his life will live on in me forever.” Ruth Cody, Sister of Dr. Lee. Mrs. Iva Ball Jackson Mrs. Iva Ball Jackson, Associate Professor of Business Education, died January 5, 1974 after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Jackson was named an outstanding educator in 1971; and in 1973 received the award for Most Outstanding Senior College teacher of business given by the Mississippi Business Education Association. “Mrs. Jackson - a woman totally dedicated to her profession and students. She desired to instill in her students the love for the field she so admirably represented.” Senior Business Education Major MICHAEL COTHRAN On February 15, 1974, Michael Cothran, senior music major, was killed in a car accident. Michael was President of the Cantata Choir and also active in the BSU. “Michael’s sweet Christian spirit and life touched all who came in contact with him. He had one goal in life — to give the Lord all he had. And Michael did just that. We’ll miss him, but he wasn’t taken in vain. It’s amazing what God can do with one short life.” Fellow Classmate 209 Landry Hueston Adkins Clinton Latin Club. Without His guidance the 1974 TRIBESMAN would have been a dismal failure. He gave our staff patience in times of trouble, hope in times of despair, inspiration in times of need, strength in times of weariness, and laughter when all else failed. This yearbook is in tribute of the Lord Jesus Christ. The theme, “Love is Immor- tal” describes His character perfectly .... for God is love. Most Sincerely Yours, Laurie Kirkland Editor, 1974 TRIBESMAN Special thanks to: Mr. Gene Rester for his help with photography in Features, Organizations, and Administration Mr. Stokes Neal for interpreting the opening section through photography. Mr. Dave Calder for his help with every section that involved photography Miss Gail Scruggs for being there whenever we needed her Mr. Johnny Taylor for coming everytimc we called on him All those who had a part in helping us capture 1974 in this issue of , the TRIBES- MAN DATE DUE PRINTCO IN U.S. A.
