TRIBESMAN 1973 33572.8 CONTENTS STUDENT LIFE 10 FEATURES 32 ORGANIZATIONS 54 ATHLETICS 104 ADMINISTRATION 140 CLASSES 158 DEDICATION HOWARD SPELL 7 ‘ 653 12 i Every yearlx ok is something of a homecoming. Each opening of an annual is a reminder of past events and activities, a nametag to assist the memory, or a trip to old haunts. Nostalgic, yes— but buoyant as well as profound. ir n fl J| vf • - _7V [ ft fe - V J mmm ■ Memory is kind to us: we remember best the things we enjoy. Such a collection of reminders is, like Homecoming, a time when the student or alumnus joins old friends to reconstruct the times they wish to recall as memory colors or shadows them. 13 t Among the first places the returning alumnus goes is the old dorm room. For the resident student, college begins and ends with the deposit of the first suitcase and the removal of the last trunk. The late night vigils before tests, the card games in the halls, cans of water propped against the doors, heaters that worked too well, and alarm clocks that failed. The tales are so old to listen to but always fresh and exciting to tell. 1 1 | Eit$S as r a 14 15 Returning to this year s freshman orientation will give a different impression from those in past years. The time, the activities, and the purpose were all a departure Irom the traditional. “Bristle Business , speeches, student forum, testing, tours, parties . . . That freshman vear. Most vividly recalled as the year at the bottom of the totem pole, a position that holds its own sort of distinction. Beginnings of each school year bring a new surge of “spirit” to the campus. Such a demonstration was an ironic start for the Year of the Apathy Club, an organization ( not pictured, in keeping with its policy ) that boasted a large, inactive membership- 18 Although most students, apathetic or not, vow that they will never return to another chapel program, many do— as speakers with the same old jokes they hated about captive audiences. MX Memory can shorten and even annihilate those ° n g hours with the flick of a page. The Memory gone, we return to the stage one day °urselves and recount the bad o Y days in thirty minutes or more . . . Coming home to the memories of intertribal rush is a high point for many alumni. The year 1972 brought changes in this too— smaller budgets, but endless originality and imagination with mountains of pastboard to make cheeses, owls, and tree stumps- joint i this ition ) vls, nips. While the number of girls rushing was smaller with rnore declaring themselves independent, there was more squealing on the big night of bids when a hirger percentage of girls got that important scrap of paper, the ticket to numerous memories for each of them. Then mealtime. Three times daily. Representative of the routine of day-to-day living. A time to exchange ideas, to gossip, to criticize and joke. Routine, occasionally broken by ice fights, a crashing tray, or sometimes by meaningful discussion. For some this was a place to express their idealism or cynicism; for others only another part of the day’s schedule. 24 Library The memories of exams. Soon to become as clouded as the information that the mind struggles to retain for just a few more hours. For some, this was the purpose— to get those facts from notebook to test paper. For others the classroom, library, and campus combined to mold a growing, thinking individual, capable of approaching and perhaps actually realizing maturity. 26 These remain. Here at each Homecoming— perhaps on campus, some less changed than others, but always at the homecoming in turning a page. A common tie between returning classes, a friend to visit— sometimes attempting an inconspicuous glance himself at our nametags to bring faces and memories together. 28 29 30 31 I 32 FEATURES Homecoming Queen Miss Gayle Overton Escort: Mr. Jerry McBride Junior Maids Miss Marianna Kennedy and Miss Judy Gore Escort: Mr. Barry Hardtj Maid of Honor Miss Jane Sanders Escort: Mr. Steve Newsome Sophomore Maid Miss Becky Alexander Escort: Mr. Jimmy McDonald Freshman Maid Miss Toni Taylor Escort: Mr. Steve Maxcy 35 Miss Mississippi College Miss Debbie Hodges 36 Beauties Miss Jane Reed Miss Lynn Potter 38 Mr. and Miss M.C. Through- out the season the team showed moments of brilliance, especially the defensive backfield. Offensive work horses Robert Felton and Bill Foley rolled off needed yardage in clutch situations. The passing game was excellent. Ricky Herzog raked in beautiful pass receptions all season long, earning the honor of being named to the first team Kodak Small College All-American squad for his receiving abilities. Senior linebacker Johnny Walker deserves mention for his team leadership role with the Chocs. Campbell, Holleyman , Watkins, Johnson , Archer , Phillips, M. Walker. Third New coaches assumed duties this year at M.C. Coach John Williams took over the head coaching position, Coach Terry McMillan worked with the running backs, and Coach Harold Tedford was in charge of the defensive backfield. With there being only 11 returning lettermen among the 23 starters, inex- perience played a big role in the outcome of the 72 season. Coach Williams looks at the season as a growing experience for his young team. This aid, along with good recruiting, places M.C. in good shape for football in 1973. I 10 i LATE SURGE DEFEATS CHOCS A 12-0 half-time turned into a heartbreaking 15-12 defeat at the hands of the Henderson State Reddies as the Chocs played their first home game. Robert Felton placed the first points on the board with a sweep around left end. Mac Barnes tossed a 13 yard pass to Ricky Herzog to com- plete the M.C. scoring. The second half was all Henderson State as the Chocs watched a possible victory slide through their hands. ■ ivhF Evans slams into opposing runner at line of scrimage. Felton lunges forward for extra yardage. Ill I wrz TURNOVERS MAKE DIFFERENCE After turning the ball over nine times, Nicholls State was trampled by the Choctaws 42-13. Robert Street, Anthony Saway, and Steve Campbell cashed in on these mis- takes by chalking up three TD’s for the defensive unit. Passes to Herzog and Mickey Parker were the other six-pointers. Danny Powell finished the scoring with twelve points, in- cluding 3 field goals and 3 extra points. With momentum in their favor, the Chocs rolled on to win the next game 20-6 over respected Western Carolina. Defense squad awaits action Street closes in for a tackle against Livingston University Coach Williams gives instructions to one of his players. Hill takes a spill after hauling in a pass. HOMECOMING VICTORY State College of Arkansas met a determined group of Chocs in the second half of the Homecoming game which ended 25-14 in favor of the Choctaws. Ross Holleyman man- aged to sneak into the end zone for the only M.C. score in the first half. The second half was a different story. Touchdowns by Felton, Charlie Weems and Hal Fletcher put the Chocs out of reach of the Bears. This Home- coming victory was followed by a 14-6 loss to Ouachita Baptist and a 13-13 deadlock with Samford University. Basketball 1972-73 In the first dozen games of the 72-73 season, the Choctaw cagers racked up eight victories with four de- feats. With no players under 6 ' 3 on the twelve-man roster, Coach James “Stute” Allen is confident he is pro- ducing a winning season. With the inside work of Bill Good, Sammy Blackmon, and Ace Bryant added to the outside strength of Buck French, Larry Lough, Eddie Ladner and Gwen Young, the team is again well-bal- anced. The team took top spot in the Mississippi Col- lege Invitational Tournament which included four schools. At present the team is expected to finish the season quite well with Coach Allen directing the attack for his 20th year. Although Mississippi College ended its 1972 baseball season with a somewhat disappointing 10-20 record, they may boast that in thirty contests they were shut out only three times. Practically all games were characterized by high scoring. At the end of the season, Tom Payne, a four-year letterman, was selected as the Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Payne, the team captain, led the Chocs’ batting power with the most home runs, while Mike Brown added consistent hitting throughout the season. The pitching was handled especially well by Al Hurt and Carr Alexander. With only two seniors leaving the squad, next year appears to be more promising. Carr Alexander and Aubrey Gasken discuss strategy. Charlie Smith awaits pitch. 124 ■ Wayne Monroe takes a water break between innings. 25 Track and Cross Country The Choctaw Cross Country team again produced a practically flawless season. Strong returning runners like champions Doug Blackwell, Lee Dukes, Lamar Strong, and Alan Clark placed M.C. on the top in the state cross country circles. Besides the state championship, the dis- tance men captured first place in the Capital City Run and the Vicksburg Jaycees Battlefield Run, and took second in the Gulf Coast Conference. After a rebuilding season last year the track team begins its season optimis- tically with distance men like Blackwell and Strong and sprinters like Calvin Holmes. The field events seem to be improving, aiding M.C. in possibly attaining the best overall track and field record in some time. Coach Joe Walker is still at the helm with a brilliant future in front of him. 126 £ Q Neil Hilliard, Mar wan Sayegh, Marty Malt by, Wayne Mullens, Royce unlap, Stanley Harper, Coach McMillan. Tennis V Girl s Basketball The season is under way for the womens basketball team this y e ar. Although holding a 2-3 record in their first five appearances, e girls are still confident of a winning season. Returning players Debb ie Moody, Marsha McMurtry, Pam Kister, and Gail Walker join a gang of freshmen to comprise this year’s squad. Eyes are already beginning to turn with excitement to the promising fu- ture of this young ball club. 1st Row: Glenda Carpenter , Karen Thornton , Karen Gardner , Gretchen Smith. 2nd Row: Jan Sojourner , Glenn Schmidt , Gail Walker , Carolyn Rogers , Sybil May. 3rd Row: Gini Applewhite , Carol Tissue, Marsha McMurtry , Pam Kister , Debbie Moody , Brenda WiUowby. 133 138 140 ADMINISTRATION President Now is the time for us— for all of us associated with Mississippi College in any respect. Mississippi College is in its one hundred and forty-seventh year. What people think of the College, what it actually is, and what it is to be are different in the minds of different individuals. For nearly one hundred and fifty years Mississippi Col- lege has represented the hopes, the ambitions, the faith, the striving of many people, that through superior aca- demic instruction in an atmosphere of mature Christianity would come better leaders, and through better leadership come better conditions of living— both spiritual and ma- terial. Throughout all these years as each succeeding fall term began parents have bidden goodbye to their sons and daughters who were to enroll at the College. These young men and women in most instances were breaking home ties for the first time. Each, with a song in his heart and a spirit of adventure in his veins, felt the urge to conquer new worlds. Former students returned to continue work of the year before, to renew friendships and to think more seriously upon plans for the days and years following graduation. As graduation approached some had found a life partner. After graduation and a few months of saving another wedding was solemized and another Mississippi College family was added to the ever increasing roster. Mississippi College is so interwoven with the life of the people of Mississippi that nothing can happen to one that does not affect the other. In every community, in every neighborhood, in every part of our State are sub- stantial homes and families of character that represent the work of Mississippi College and demonstrate its in- fluence. In public office, in learned professions, in pulpits throughout our State, in channels of business, many leaders received their education, their inspiration, their conception of vocational ethics at Mississippi College. Mississippi College is more than a campus, buildings and a football field. Primarily it is a spirit, a spirit that it took nearly one hundred and fifty years to build; a robust and contagious spirit, yet genteel and self-controlled; a spirit that demands the free flow of ideas, freedom of expression and the acceptance of full responsibility for beliefs honestly held; a spirit of unity among all Missis- sippi College men and women that will continue as long as life itself. This spirit is perhaps the most valuable asset that the College has. You and I have inherited this spirit built by generations now gone. Let us breathe deeply of it that we may be true to the finest traditions of Christian democracy. Now is the time for us by our thoughts and deeds to strengthen and build the Choctaw spirit so that we may be true to those who have preceded us and may make our full contribution to the generations yet to follow. Now is the time for us! Dr. Lewis Nobles 142 Board of Trustees Seated: Dr. Lewis Nobles , Mr. George J. Thornton , Mr. Nick Walker , Dr. Boh N. Ramsay , Mr. Lelancl R. Speed.
