LELAND SPEED LIBRARY MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CLINTON, MISSISSIPPI index Student Life 16 Administration 34 Organizations 52 Features 108 Classes 132 Athletics 166 1 v ย vย A v.V.V.V l 1 V.Yย ' n T.Tl We are part of the world and its problems. We accept the responsibility with each breath taken and each friend made. The involvement that comes from the feelings and the activities and the thoughts that make up our world is something we can no longer escape. We should no longer wish to. Is it to be a new time? Can we erase the pains and disappointments, the naivety and wonder, the mistakes and regrets? Do we want to? The dawn does bring new opportunities, And blinds the pastโ€” but only for a second. 8 Itโ€™s the smile of a friendโ€” Or just their glance. Itโ€™s new peopleโ€” Or the old cast in altered roles. The places remain the same, but each of us takes away that special impression that creates cherished memories. 10 m We go through the routine (and the rain). We endure the work And welcome the relief โ€”the brief glory โ€”the hurried honor โ€”the quiet beauty And go on from there again. cl โ€™j Wi iiu iilf ' Ulllll J hiiI SS8 IkS! iNijii 14 tm The scenes are the same. The players flare into brilliance and just as quickly fizzle. The dialogue varies little. But no matter what we can say and do, What we can aspire to and somehow gain, We come back to those feelings that bind and yet distinguish us. The emotions that make us โ€œMC studentsโ€ together while keeping us unique. k 15 kd โ€ข mmm We return with mixed emotionsโ€” hope, hate, gratefulness, resignation, determination. Outwardly, it looks the sameโ€” except for an added coat of paint here there, and campus street names. Another year ... a new chance. a ' ยฑ1 There are new people- faces reflecting the happiness and anxiety of being a freshman. Two short weeks of assemblies, spirit sticks, registration, carnivals, and a shaving cream fight begin the transformation from freshman to MC student. 20 22 โ– mm Homecomingโ€” the return to the old โ€˜โ€˜Alma Mater.โ€ One day of crepe paper, talent, reunions, antique cars, and football. The theme may be the โ€œGood Ole Daysโ€, but it holds little relevance for us today. We can no longer cling to the past traditions when our worldโ€” and our own common senseโ€” demand change. 23 MwaniHBHnnKiM But itโ€™s difference today that starts to look alike. Outward change doesn ' t guarantee the same inside. No matter how we cry for freedom, it is finally found within, or never at all. 25 V 26 27 Still they go onโ€” the experiences of MC life. Those that we wish to remember, or those better left buried. We canโ€™t hope for all good times, for nothing can be truly good unless it is surrounded by those moments of despair and disappointment. 31 JjI The time will come to leaveโ€” with those same emotions that brought usโ€” to a patched-up world of new people, new ideas and experiences. We will look back on our years here with the good things cherished, but with the strength received through difficulty remaining a part of us. We all can be united in our hopeโ€” and needโ€” to be valued as individuals. It is not too much to ask, or to strive for. 33 ad mini PRESIDENT Dr. Louis Nobles Extended growth and development has charac- terized the past year at Mississippi College under the leadership of its president, Dr. Lewis Nobles. Improvement of the campus has been seen in the beautification of grounds, renovation of facilities, and plans for additional expansion. The ability of Dr. Nobles to provide effective cooperation among the administration, faculty, and students has in- creased educational achievement. Invitational May 6 Ole Miss THE 1971 FOOTBALL SEASON Although the season ended with a 2-8 record, the Choctaws had some individual feats that were outstanding. Early in the season Rick Herzog set a pass reception record by hauling in his 63rd pass. For the remainder of the season he con- tinued his fine performance and stretched his reception record. A 42 yard field goal by Roger Pierce broke a school record set in 1969 by Frank Dyer with his 38 yard kick. Rick Blockerโ€™s kickoff return of 97 yards wiped out the previous record of 95 yards. Bo Chism was named โ€œMississippi Collegeโ€™s Most Outstanding Football Player of 1971โ€ by the Jackson Touchdown Club. Mike Kappelman and Charlie Hayden should be men- tioned for their consistently good blocking as of- fensive linemen. After 13 years with the Mississippi College foot- ball team Coach Hartwell McPhail resigned as head football coach halfway through the season. He led the Chocs to an impressive 59-50-5 record and 8 winning seasons out of 12 while serving as head coach. In his place came acting Head Coach Bernard Blackwell, an outstanding line coach that had worked with McPhail for 15 years. At the close of the season Blackwell was named โ€œMississippiโ€™s Outstanding Sportsman for 1971โ€. With a good group of returning lettermen, new Head Coach John Williams and the M.C. students are looking forward to a better season in 1972. Row Five: Roberts, Alexander, Lindsey, Seiz. Dejected bench reveals the outcome of the opening game. Jimmy Thompson leads interference for a Dennis Wilson sweep. Favorable Stats Not Enough Although the game statistics favored M.C., the Choctaws opened the season by dropping a game 24-6 to Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Reddies were able to score twice before M.C. broke through to the board. The Chocs moved the ball well mostly by a passing attack including the 40 yard scoring strike from Buskirk to Foshee. Tough Luck Causes Loss Two bad breaks turned a 17-6 advantage into a 19-17 deficit for M.C. against Southern State. M.C. opened the game scoring with a 42 yard field goal by Roger Pierce and 22 yard aerial connect- ing Wilson and Chatagnier. The Muleriders man- aged to score once before Rick Blocker returned a kick-off for a TD. Pierceโ€™s two PATโ€™s in the game closed the M.C. scoring. A fumble and a short punt set up the Muleriderโ€™s late scores that pushed them ahead at the close of the game. Benny Doster receives instructions from Coach Blackwell. Break Losing Streak Following defeats at the hands of Ouachita Baptist (28-0), Harding (20-14), and Western Carolina (37-0), the Chocs broke into the win column with a 15-6 victory over Nichols State. A pass from John Buskirk to Rick Blocker opened the scoring for M.C. Before the end of the first half the Colonels tied the score 6-6. A Colonel fumble picked up by Gary Nowell led to another M.C. score. Ray Wright made the final score 15-6 by kicking a 33 yard field goal. After winning this game the Choctaws traveled to the University of Arkansas only to be beaten 30-14. Offensive Errors Costly Five interceptions and two fumbles accounted for the bitter 41-0 loss of the Choctaws homecoming contest to the Samford Bulldogs. Samford controlled the ball almost the entire game as M.C. offered few scoring threats. Following this defeat M.C. fought a tough Living- ston University, but was again set back 20-3. The Chocs played a great defensive game but the third ranked small college in the U.S. overpowered them. M.C.โ€™s score came on a 27 yard field goal by Roger Pierce. Chocs Finish With Win Mississippi College closed the season with a 29-9 vic- tory over Northwood Institute of Cedar Hills, Texas. Steve Sparks scored twice on short runs and Pierce added the extra points. A interception return by Johnny Mills, a Steve Thompson touchdown, and another Pierce field goal rounded out the Choc scoring. The victory closed the season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Ronnie Garner (23) and Johnny Mills (31) wrestle down a Living- ston runner. Coach Nixon talks over strategy with the defensive backfield. m Billy Thompson (24) takes a hand-off from quarterback John Buskirk (14). Assisted by a Steve Spark (32) block, Billy Thompson (24) goes for extra yardage. Carr Alexander (15) booms another towering punt for the Choctaws. Second Row: Tony Case, Harold Jefcoat, Kent Cooper, Gwyn Young, Robbie Walters, Bill Good, John Sch- lichtman, John David Skinner, Eddie Ladner. The 1971-72 Choctaws basketball team was once again characterized by high-scoring exciting games. In the first part of the season, spirit really reigned high on the Mississippi College campus as the Chocs racked up a 98-93 victory over Millsaps and edged out Belhaven 79-74 in two very tense games. Transfers Bill Good at 6โ€™ 9โ€ and John Schlitchman at 6โ€™ 8โ€ and freshman John Skinner also at 6โ€™ 8โ€ gave the team more height than usual. Giving the team stability were returning lettermen Eddie Arender, Steve Rives, Ronnie Sumrall, Marc Dukes, Harold Jefcoat, and David Hollingsworth. With the help of these factors the squad improved on the 6-19 outcome of the previous year. In Coach Allenโ€™s 19th year with the Chocs, the offensive attack was exceptionally balanced having both an inside and outside scoring threat. The 1972-73 team should be more experienced and should furnish M.C. with an even more productive season. 177 1 Ladner guns over the defending Lynx. Unguarded Arender sinks an easy basket. 181 1971 BASKETBALL The โ€™71 baseball Choctaws, coached by James Coleman, managed to finish the season with a 10-1 1 record. Because of the consistant hitting of Ronnie Grantham, Slick Henry, Tom Payne, and Bob Disney, the Chocs were only shut out once. High scores were prevalent, as in the 32-3 victory over Belhaven and a 15-11 loss to the same school. One of the most excit- ing games was the 6-5 victory over highly re- garded USM. Despite a mediocre season, a growing amount of interest was shown in the Mississippi College baseball team. Coach James Coleman Ronnie Grantham demon- strates good form in laying down a bunt. 182 W After smashing a double, Gerald Sartin throws on a jacket to keep his pitching arm warm. Under the direction of Coach Joe Walker, the track and cross country teams were at their peak in the 1971-72 season. Undefeated in dual meets the cross country runners were victorious in the Capital City Run. The M. C. distance men brought cross country into the spotlight by capturing the state co-championship, sharing the title with Mis- sissippi State. Individual efforts by upperclassmen Doug Blackwell and Lamar Strong broke records and brought honors to M. C. Such powerful fresh- men runners as Lee Dukes and Jack Wood give us a reason to look forward to assured success in the 1972-73 season. 188 John Branning and Willie Price step into the blocks for the next race. In all three sports the girls per- formed brilliantly and posted winning seasons. The vol- leyball team defeated Northwestern Junior College, Hinds County Junior College, Perkinston Junior College, and won their division in the University of Southern Missis- sippi Tournament. The volleyballers had opportunities to play some out-of-state opponents such as Memphis State, Jackson (Tenn.) State, Southwestern at Memphis, and University of Tennessee at Martin. The basketball team did very well also but was set back by the โ€™71 national championship team of MSCW in the M.C. Invitational tourney. Following an exceptionally successful season in โ€™71 the tennis team is looking forward to the competi- tion in ' 72. H fv xjxjx INTRAMURALS , 198 CHEERLEADERS AFTER THOUGHTS 203 206 Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and re- member what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story ... Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Nei- ther be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. โ€”from DESIDERATA, in old Saint Paulโ€™s Church, Baltimore, 1692 207 EDITORS NOTE An annual is a yearโ€™s representation of life on a campus. In the past few years annual editors all over the country have tried to make annuals a medium for change. In the 1972 TRIBESMAN we have attempted to recreate the change that has occurred on campus this year. The year started off with womenโ€™s lib- eration: jeans permission on campus and the first woman SBA president. A dim spot in the otherwise successful new student administration was the cut- back in freshman orientation. Off campus events also affected the lives of students as the eigh- teen-year-old gained the vote and the Waller administration put a new empha- sis on youth. We have fought and gained the right to be involved. With involve- ment comes responsibilities which we must accept and fulfill to the best of our abilities. To take on the responsibility of being an editor, a person must be a little crazy and have a lot of faith in a competent staff. I canโ€™t express my appreciation to those staff members who worked the week before the final deadline and made it possible for us to finish on time. Ney Gore, Larry Simmons, Stokes Neal, Charlie Ray, Richard Ritchie, and Bill Strange were invaluable in their help when we needed pictures at the last minute. Jane Dunn has been the best I could ask for in a business manager. The 1972 TRIBESMAN is different be- cause it reflects the personalities of those people that worked on it. Our memories of it will range from the day I stood bawling into a borrowed hand- kerchief to when we joyously sent that last package on its way to Nashville. Our desire is that this book will not only bring back memories to you but that it will also remind you in later years of the ideals you believed in and the goals you strove for as a college student.
