l remember waking to the sound of something clanging in my ear . . . stumbling, half awake, methodically dressing myself and then slumping into a desk, not realizing quite how l got there. Then the words, the words l should have listened to more closely, somehow getting from the teacher's mouth to my notebook. Did he say that? I don't remember.

On a quiet day I think of a year gone by . . . recalling a face unknown to me, that was soon to become a friend with whom I QW would share my room, my thoughts, my hopes. These days were days to make new riends . . . to grow in friendship - meeting, laughing, sharing cokes and talk.

Paint on my nose, in my hair. I still can feel the hammer on my thumb. There! lt looks just right. Baloons. Popcorn. What a happy time! Back up the steps. The silence of an empty room. Exhaustion. The landing amidst pillows on the squeaky springs of my bed. Books scattered everywhere. Papers here and there. l'll never remember it all. Go to sleep. No not yet. Turn out the light! Just a minute more. Sleep. Out again! Waving hands in the quickly departing autumn air. The raindrops standing on the bare branches.
