These days were days to make new riends . . . to grow in friendship - meeting, laughing, sharing cokes and talk. l remember waking to the sound of something clanging in my ear . . . stumbling, half awake, methodically dressing myself and then slumping into a desk, not realizing quite how l got there. Then the words, the words l should have listened to more closely, somehow getting from the teacher's mouth to my notebook. Did he say that? I don't remember. Paint on my nose, in my hair. I still can feel the hammer on my thumb. There! lt looks just right. Baloons. Popcorn. What a happy time! Back up the steps. The silence of an empty room. Exhaustion. The landing amidst pillows on the squeaky springs of my bed. Books scattered everywhere. Papers here and there. l'll never remember it all. Go to sleep. No not yet. Turn out the light! Just a minute more. Sleep. Out again! Waving hands in the quickly departing autumn air. The raindrops standing on the bare branches. Are my feet still there? A drizzle. Slush. Hot chocolate and friends are the warmest things on a winter clay. We talk of things to come. New studies-classes-people- plays. Are you going? My classmates transformed into characters from Shakespeare, Milton, Marlowe through the magic of the theatre. I sit enjoying every line, every lyric. A laugh rises from my throat, my hands applaud-How good to be entertained. The solitude of quiet and night when studies, meetings, laughter stops. When moonlight dances across the floor, when l have time to think, to plan, to worry, darkness scmehow magnifies my fears and frustrations. But no matter how defected how depressed I may feel, there is One who watches with His care. I am not alone. I3 Crocus. Pushing up with the determination born of springtime. Parties, banquets. They all seem to come with spring. The days grow warmer, longer. My time with friends shorter. So much to be clone, to do. Dicl I make it? Well, just barely An A there. That is good.
