Fifty years ago Dotson McGinnis Nelson began his long career at Mississippi College as a freshman. After graduating from MC in 1910, and taking his doctorate at the University of Indiana, he returned to his Alma Mater to teach for 15 years. In 1931, Dr. Nelson became President, and since that time Mis- sissippi College has become one of the outstanding educational institutions in our nation. Some of his innumerable accomplishments include the conversion of the men’s school of 400 students into a co-educational institution of over 2,000 men and women; acquisition of property for greater expansion; addition of 12 buildings on the campus proper, and five more in the beginning stage; enlargement of the faculty and staff from 25 to more than 100; increase- ment of the endowment from $632,000 to nearly $1,- 500,000; addition of thirteen departments to the original thirteen; number of books in the library has increased from 14,000 to over 50,000; and inaugura- tion of graduate work. More students are graduating from MC year after year than were in the entire stu- dent body 25 years ago. In this his twenty-fifth year as President, we salute “The Great White Chief of the Choctaws.”
