Mississinewa students now have a brand new 8.3 million dollar school to attend. The first few weeks were an adjustment period for everyone, due to new surroundings and newly proposed rules; but students adjusted fairly well and classes went on as usual. The new Mississinewa High School has excellent facilities, and for the first time plenty of space. Teachers were amazed at all the new equipment available to them. The Science Opening — 3 Department now has the necessities to perform the experiments that they couldn ' t before. The Language Department has a lab room that establishes communication between students and the teacher. The Fine Arts Department includes a Band Room with individual practice areas, and an Art Room complete with a sketch loft. The new Miss. is not only utiUtarian, but the school has been much acclaimed for its architectural beauty as well. Opening — 5 6 — New facilities When MHS moved this past summer, there were several changes made in the system, but three of these affected nearly everyone. The first of these was the end of the open campus system wh ich brought about the The new facilities need for study halls. The cafeteria was chosen as the scene for the study periods and is also the setting for major change two, closed lunch periods. All full day students are now required to eat lunch at the school whether it be ala carte, type A or brought. The third difference is the facilities themselves. New facilities — 7 The new MHS resource center Mrs. Rosen, the school librar- ian, went from a small undersized library, to a giant Resource Cen- ter practically overnight. She was not alone — to help her were two librarian-clerks: Mrs. Jacks in charge of circulation, and Mrs. Stevenson in charge of media and audio visuals. The beautiful new Resource Center can boast of having approximately forty-two carrels with facilities for individ- ual study. The library proper is a sunken study area with ample number of tables and chairs. The total capacity for the center is one-hundred and eighty people. The library is provided to make studying pleasurable, rather than drudgery. With surroundings like this, who could complain? Chuck Hester takes advantage of a free moment and exchanges thoughts with another student. Mr. Fessenden ' s English class becomes acquainted with the new facihties. ' — Library The dictionary shelves are a popular stop for students doing their spelling words while in the center. Lisa Colyer is one among the students who gave Mrs. Rosen a hand during school hours. The library supplies not only a quiet place for study but also for conversation as jun- ior Marc Royal demonstrates. Library — 9 Registration Waiting seemed to be the name of the game at registration this year as students attempted to col- lect schedules and books for their upcoming classes. Computer foul-ups plagued many students who found them- selves taking three Typing One courses all in the same semester. Counselors fought to right the wrongs set in by the highly sophisticated machines as Aryss Beebe passed out books and Judy Hawkins and Mona Smith dis- tributed free lockers. Jerry Tudor and Frances O ' Mara wait for Mrs. Beebe to fill their book orders. Sandv Demarcus receives her free gift of a brand new locker! Registration — 11 Cafeteria: the eating place and society circle The cafeteria serves the school, not only as a place to get a pretty fair lunch and or breakfast, but also as a place for kids to social- ize and relax a minute. The cafeteria has undergone some pretty important changes. There are now four lines of serv- ice. Two are for the regular fifty cent meal. The other two are for what is known as ala carte. In this line are hamburgers and french fries, plus salads, pud- dings, and sandwiches. That way one gets a little variety every day. The cafeteria took on a new look too. The tables are geometri- cally shaped, and everything is color coordinated. The fact that it also offers a place to visit for awhile, is important to a lot of people; espe- cially since the upper bleachers are no longer available. The teachers also appreciate a chance to sit and talk by them- selves in the new faculty dining area. Now that we ' re in the new building, it is more difficult for teachers and students alike to stop and talk awhile in the halls. The cafeteria relieves the diffi- culty and gives us a chance to do just that. For one, blessed half an hour, one gets lunch and conver- sation for just fifty cents. Long lines plagued the cafeteria at the beginning of the year when only two lines were used. Despite the long wait these girls seem to be able to keep themselves entertained. 12 — Cafeteria ■ft This is much the scene once students get inside the doors. With miltc on trays these students await their generous helping of MHS cafeteria food. JuMe Barker really enjoys her mid- day meal with a carton of milk to wash it down. 14 — Activities When things get boring on the bus are a number of things you can do. Chr Cunningham likes lo lay cards but McWhirt woultj rather make faces. KMM J rZ Activities Tuesdays are a special day for the active student at MHS because they receive the chance to cut class and attend a special activity period that lasts for an hour during the day. Clubs meet and fill the student in on the latest events happening within the different organiza- tions. This section covers these activities. The Indianettes are the pom pon division of the marching band. They not only march and com- pete with the band but they also participate in contests of their own. Our poms place a great deal of emphasis on their discipline which creates a working type atmosphere while they practice. After working both night and day on their contest dance rou- tine these eleven girls took a trip down to camp which was held at Ball State and managed several placings in dance, drill team, and overall performance. The girls then returned home to better prepare themselves for upcoming competitions. With the help of Kelly .Moyer who originally choreographed the routine, the poms attempted to work all the bugs out. With shaft as their theme the Indianettes danced their way into a second place seating at the Marion County Fair, and a disap- pointing seventh place at the Indiana State Fair. The poms also went to the Indiana State Fair with the marching band on Farmers ' Day. Melody. Terri. Lesa. Jane, and Penny flash a prize-winning set of smiles toward the judges ' stand. This year ' s theme for the homecoming dance was Looks Like We Made It. The reigning court for the big event was (below) Linda Patterson. Junior Attendant; Tonya Lowden, Freshman Attendant; Wendy Rodriquez, Queen; Brenda Mor- iarity. Senior Attendant; and Connie Neeley, Sophomore Attendant. After a disappointing loss to Eastbrook High School, the dance was held in the cafeteria. The band playing was Cassady as in past years. The music stop- ped around eleven and the cou- ples left to enjoy the rest of the evening together. The Homecoming ' s activities were topped off with a powder puff football game won by the Junior and Sophomore classes. A parade through the town also highlighted the events of the eve- ning. The annual bonfire was held the night before the actual game in an effort to spirit the team into Memories of homecoming - «l  « =i%«is,J -. Aside from the weekly meet- ings where today ' s problems are answered with Christian insight, the club sponsored a number of activities. One such activity was the Mud Bowl held this year for the first time at the Upland City Park. Pictured below are some of the stunts seen there. Another was the Scream m the Dark, a money raising haunted house. The Snow Day was for those who can appreciate cold weather. This year it was held at Pokagon State Park. Campus Life also sponsored its annual trip to Florida during Spring Break. Phil Bender headed up the Mississinewa Club this Year. Room in the shop area will allow for mechanic studies with actual cars. Science projects can be looked into with greater depth because of the purchase of fine equipment. The list of possible offerings goes on and on and soon will become more reality than dream. Academics — 69 Readin ' ritin ' rithmetic Ever since the beginning of time students have been sub- jected to the three R ' s of edu- cation, readin ' , ritin ' , and rith- metic. This year at MHS has been no different. All college bound seniors can brag of a four year English pro- gram that each of them had to go through. Next year however the pro- gram changes to supply students with a wider variety of courses in a modular system. Rithmetic at MHS can be a combination of several different courses from beginning or pre- algebra to trigonometry. History is an automatic major starting with civics in the fresh- man year. Pile ups like this weren ' t an uncommon sight next to roads. Pictures by Marion Chronicle Tribune Snow and coal halt activity Blizzard is a word not unfamiliar to the Hoosier state and its sur- rounding neighbors. Winds in excess of sixty miles an hour as well as snow pile ups of over twenty feet threatened residents. It took over a week to clear main roads and many secondary roads remained snow covered until the spring thaw. School was out for four days while tired city workers attempted to get the community moving once again. School recessed for quite a few days this year not only because of the snow but also because of the E- . It takes but a moment, but the memory sometimes lasts a lifetime. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friend- ship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, and is nature ' s antidote for trouble. Yet, it cannot be bought, begged, or borrowed or stolen, for it is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Dick Kennard of News- foto Yearbooks is also to be thanked for much assist- ance in the publication of the row WOW. Finally all those staff members at the high school who so graciously allowed their classes to be inter- rupted for a picture or some such thing should receive a grateful acknowledgement of their understanding, especially Mr. Dave Hudel- son who sponsors the year- ,book. ■ This year ' s POW WOW contains some interesting features which include the student index located on page 174 as well as 8 pages of full color in the front sec- tion. The divider pages are printed in 24 pt. type to draw your attention to their content. The endsheets are designed to be autographed. s The cost of the book tame to over $8000 of which the 678 who pur- chased them only paid $7.00 each. The balance was picked up by local busi- nesses in the form of adver- tising. The whole project was put together in private homes by a completely vol- unteer staff. Thanks to all once asain.
