We at MHS are urged by our counselors and teachers to include math in our curriculum. Mrs. Kinser, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Gould, and Mr. Kis- sane try very hard to instruct us in the fundamentals of math from one-plus- one to analysis. Math is necessary for many facets of life; economics, science, engineering . . . and just plain mathin ' around. A student who is pursuing a busi- ness major in high school has classes such as Bookkeeping, Business Law, Business Math, Typing, Shorthand, and Business English to name a few. A large percent of the jobs available in our nation require skills in busi- ness techniques. At Mississinewa we start as freshmen in the study of Current Problems. We continue to delve into the lives of our ancestors through World His- tory. As seniors we undertake the studies of Economics and Govern- ment. Through the study of history we are taught, primarily, to learn from the mistakes of past genera- tions. 1 1 ■■B |H 1 I ■B ■| Bl i i B w 1 k jl Wr. - ' - ' ' i 1 b j m B ;M m i i 1 1 .} -y:.. - i |r , ,- ii HI K 19 wBtttik m 37 Although Industrial Arts is predominantly a boys class, there a few ex- ceptions. We see it everywhere; in magazines, on television, and through special progranns. Fitness seems especially evident in our genera- ation. Society puts a premium on good health now more than ever. Employers are more like- ly to hire the person who appears to have that healthy look . Life insurance rates are usual- ly better and lower for those who are fit. In the past few years GAA has emerged from an ignored group to one that puts out fine female athletes. Under the direction of Miss Nierste the girls participate in many sports such as swimming, hiking, horseback riding, skating, bowling, and the traditional volley- ball and basketball. This year the girls sold wastebaskets and red and white hats to help pay for spiffy new uniforms. I G.A.A. Early in this school year we sadly watched her leave because of her husband ' s transfer to Georgia. We welcome her replacement, Miss Lin- da Banker as our new French teacher. While not all the students in FTA will become teachers it is a good expe- rience for anyone. Probably the most interesting part of FTA is that mem- bers get the chance to student teach at one of the grade schools or possibly in the high school. These people usually take the time out of their school day to do this. This in itself makes the of- fer attractive. After some experience the students are enjoying their teach- ing and are finding out whether they would like a teaching career. 1 The Above Members of FTA Are: (Back) Bev- erly Dailey, John Huston, David Dessing, Don Penit, Mike Lynch, Ken Kendall, Harvey Van- denburg, Jim Crick, Bill Fern, Jim Clark. FW 1 Future Homemakers of America One of the major projects this year for the FHA was sponsoring a very successful Homecoming Dance. The dance, complete with live band, top- ped off the evening of festivities and carried the theme Follies . Suzy Homemaking is not only limited to the fe- males of MHS this year. You may have been sur- prised to see a few pioneering young men pushing football jerseys, calendar books, and pen sets for FHA. Quite a step in the forward direction. We are only left to wonder whose idea it was to have a slumber party for the bold young initiates. L IH 1 1 K H rW f ' m; aH n Ht H JL ML WM i H 1 A. This is, of course, our first foreign exchange student, Henrica Lilius. Henri- ca ' s honneland is Finland. She is staying with Rev. and Mrs. Eugene Rap- son while living in Jonesboro. Henrica is sponsored by the Honor Soci- ety, and is a member of several clubs and organizations such as Student Council, Tri-Hi-Y, Honor Society, and Pep Club. We sincerely hope that our school, our town, and our country have lived up to her expectations, and we wish her a happy stay in the U.S. (Above) Henrica helps sack up popcorn at the Student Council concession stand. Pictured Below Are Thespian Officers: Dawn Wilson, Recorder; Kay Arling- ton, Secretary; Tom Shoemaker, Treasurer; Susie Taylor, Vice-President; Connie Whitaker, President. The Thespians is a national organiza- tion of aspiring young actors and actresses dedicated to the purpose of bringing en- tertainment to the world. They are an honorary and elite group who have work- ed hard to earn their place in Thespians. In order to become a Thespian one is re- quired to work at least one-hundred hours on a theatrical production. They must then be voted in by other members of the group. Each year a banquet is given to in- duct new members. At the end of each year a senior is chosen to be Best Thes- pian Award winner. These winners are determined by the amount of work points that they have accumulated in high school. The voting is done by the other Thespians and the award is given on senior honor night. The Drama Club is a group formed by students of all grades. Together with the Thespians this group performs plays of multiple varieties. One of the first pro- jects of their busy year is a float in the Homecoming parade. After this the club ' s activities are slowed down until the annual variety show. This show is com- posed of the talents of the stu- dents of our school. The theme for the variety show this year was 125 N. Broadway Follies. The first place award was won by Tom Shoemaker who played a piano solo entitled Maple Leaf Rag . Cindy Wright, a ju- nior high student from East School took second place honors with a piano solo of her own ar- rangement. Diane Rademaker captured third place with a vocal solo, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face . The master of cere- monies was Mr. Jack Hall of of WGOM in Marion. Other productions of the drama club are two one-act plays; Four Little Words , a comedy, and Trifles , a drama. There is a lot of work that must be done in order to put a pro- duction together. First is the matter of choosing a play that suits most of the members. Then is the problem of choosing between many talented amateurs to be in the cast. Committees must be chosen for publicity, props, stage, lighting, make-up, costumes, programs, and tickets. The house committee is also cho- sen. The dramatists have six weeks in which to learn their lines, build sets, and organize the over-all business of turning out a successful production. ' k i ia4 1973 TENNIS SEASON Despite the Tennis Team ' s dismal record of 0-8, fine talent was displayed in Varsity racketeers Gary Davis, Jim Campbell, Ron Roseberry and Rex Cooksey. Gary Davis, in an exciting match, was the sole Indian to advance to the second round in the Peru Sectional. The B-Team finished with one win in five starts with such stand-outs as Paul Maine, Mark Stephenson, Randy Heathcote, Doyle Seekens, Joe Ziller, Jeff McWhirt and Brad Martin. With these team members. Coach Haggerty will face next season with hopeful optimism. The major freshman sports have not gone unnoticed. They have compiled a 1-4-1 record in football and 9 wins and 6 losses in basketball. We expect an out- standing performance from them in their continuing high school career.
