OUR BAND Starting in August with 18 bandsmen, Don Noonan, the new director, soon had 56 instrumentalists, a flag corps, and new students waiting for acceptance in the fast-growing organization. Competition began for the band early in August at the Darke County Fair. Many hours of dedication and effort proved the excellence of 31 musicians who participated in solo and ensemble contests at Arcanum High School. Two soloists won No. 1 ratings: one soloist won a No. 2; 3 ensembles received No. 1, and three ensembles received No. 2 ratings. Other invaluable experiences of the band were participation in a band contest at Troy; several occasions with Mr. Their of VanderCook College of Music as guest conductor; practices of sectionals preparing for competition; formation of a stage band, a pep band, a concert band, and a spectacular marching band. The tremendous growth and success of the band brought forth the importance and necessity for new uniforms and more equipment. With the enthusiasm generated by the band members and their director, the MV Band Boosters quickly sprang into action and assisted in fund-raising projects — selling more than 3000 pizzas, candy, raffle tickets, and soliciting money from interested donors. This student-community effort put within easy reach the goal of $15,000 for new uniforms to be available in 1980-81. Summer band camp at Richmond, Indiana, furhter competition in future events, a new 12-member flag corp. and the great effort and enthusiasm of the members and their director call for predictions for a NUMBER ONE rating in the upcoming season. 12
