East Side health and safety vehi- cles, decorated cars bearing the 1978-79 King, Jim Detling and Queen, Karen Beanblossom, and the 1979- 80 King and Queen candi- dates princes, princesses, junior princess, Marla Butch and prince, Brian Rehmert. Later at the football field, the crowning of 1979-80 Queen, Melissa Cox, King, Bernie Weiss climaxed an unforget- table homecoming celebra- tion. 5 QUEEN: MELISSA COX KING: BERNIE WEISS 2nd RUNNER-UP: LUANN STAMMEN 1st RUNNER-UP: CINDY PEARSON DARRELL BREYMIER DALE SIEFRING Rachele Armstrong Hank Moore Doris Stammen Paul Armstrong Cheryl Rehmert Billy Emrick ROYALTIES Sherrie Bradley Eric Hiatt Marla Butch Brian Rehmert Marla Hurley Mike Whitsel 7 LEFT TO RIGHT Dale Siefring Cindy Pearson Bryan Rehmert Bernie Weiss Melissa Cox Marla Butch Luann Stamman Darrell Breymier Sophomore Junior Representative Representative Lori Kramer Diane Wolford Bryon Weiss Dalr Breymier 10 OUR BAND Starting in August with 18 bandsmen, Don Noonan, the new director, soon had 56 instrumentalists, a flag corps, and new students waiting for acceptance in the fast-growing organization. Competition began for the band early in August at the Darke County Fair. Many hours of dedication and effort proved the excellence of 31 musicians who participated in solo and ensemble contests at Arcanum High School. Two soloists won No. 1 ratings: one soloist won a No. 2; 3 ensembles received No. 1, and three ensembles received No. 2 ratings. Other invaluable experiences of the band were participation in a band contest at Troy; several occasions with Mr. Their of VanderCook College of Music as guest conductor; practices of sectionals preparing for competition; formation of a stage band, a pep band, a concert band, and a spectacular marching band. The tremendous growth and success of the band brought forth the importance and necessity for new uniforms and more equipment. With the enthusiasm generated by the band members and their director, the MV Band Boosters quickly sprang into action and assisted in fund-raising projects — selling more than 3000 pizzas, candy, raffle tickets, and soliciting money from interested donors. This student-community effort put within easy reach the goal of $15,000 for new uniforms to be available in 1980-81. Summer band camp at Richmond, Indiana, furhter competition in future events, a new 12-member flag corp. and the great effort and enthusiasm of the members and their director call for predictions for a NUMBER ONE rating in the upcoming season. 12 s - P 0° £•' £ „ I- Bk c,o 0 Vk «V ,o«s$ Most Popular Melissa Cox Bernie Weiss Most Attractive Cindy Pearson Darrell Bryrmer Most Spirited Luann Stammen Dale Siefring Most Athletic Pat Gutierrez Hank Moore Best Dressed Rachete Armstrong Craig Smith Class Clowns Patty Weiss Marty Johnson Most Talented Marilyn Bateman Evan Wojcieschowsky Most Likely to Succeed Jennifer Schmitz Chuck Stickelman 18 BOE Banquet Members of the Business Office Education Advisory Board, school administrators, faculty, BOE students and their parents and guests attended the annual BOE Awards Banquet Members of the junior and senior classes plan- ned the banquet meal, decorated the tables, made the mural (a large rainbow with a pot of golden office skills at the end), and presented the entire program In addition to engraved charms presented to those who were recognized for outstanding achievement, and certificates of participation to those who were in the regional contests, first year students received member- ship charms and the second year students received desk pen sets Red roses and gifts were presented to Mrs Halley, senior IOE teacher, who retired from teaching this year. 19 THE INDUCTION CERE- MONY is perhaps one of the most exciting activities of the school year. Students become tense and appre- hensive as the time draws near. “Will I be chosen? “My grades are okay, but will they remember when I forged mom’s name on my absence excuse??? Yes, and how about the time I got caught cheating on my exams? Teachers who select the candidates for NHS practice the old maxim well — To err is human; to forgive, divine. Students are tapped for their scholarship, leadership, character, and service to the school and the community. MRS. DIXIE MARSHALL is the NHS sponsor. 21 F.F.A. The competition involves answering questions of academic nature. Each team is asked questions alternately with a time limit of ten seconds. Points are awarded for each question answered. In the first round of competition, MV won easily over St. Henry in a 20-minute match. Sponsored by the band boosters, the basket- ball game proved to be both exciting and profit- able Money taken in at the game was used to purchase the new band uniforms that the band members so proudly wear now MISSED IT! That's all right. Kim What a game!!! Dirty ret! In a tropical garden of rainbow colors, ruled over by a Tiki god, juniors and seniors danced to the music of ABACUS. Sponsored by Miss Hopewell and Mr. Courtney, many long hours were spent in creating the hedges, the bam- boo hut, the bridges and the cave entrance Upon crossing the bridge and entering the cave that led to the garden, the real world was left far behind to the delight of the guests. Punch served in champagne glasses and hor d'oeuvres were enjoyed by the guests who were seated at candlelit tables Seniors Luann Stammen and Darrell Brey- mier were honored by the junior class to reign as queen and king over the 1980 prom. Guests were again entertained after the prom by the Rotary and Elks Clubs where they danced to the music of another band. Then came the dawn of a new day. The dreamy-eyed youths left their fantasy land and an unforget- table evening to enjoy a breakfast served by the Union City Elks Club. 1980 PROM QUEEN — Luann Stammen and KING — Dar- rell Breymler A TIME FOR US 32 L-R: Karen Beanblossom. 1979 queen, Luann Stammen and Darrell Breymier. 1980 queen and king, and Perry Doppler, 1979 king 33 34 Honors and Awards Melissa Cox, Student Council President, presided over the dinner meeting held in the high school caf- eteria. HELEN!! 57 THE COOKS’ PRAYER Lord of all pots and pans and things since I've not time to be A saint by doing lovely things or watching late with Thee Or dreaming in the dawn of light or storming Heaven's gates Make me a saint by getting meals and washing up the plates. Although I must have Martha's hands, I do have Mary's mind. And when I wipe up tracks and scuffs Thy sandals, Lord, I find. I think of how they trod the earth Each time I scrub the floor Accept this meditation, Lord, I haven’t time for more. Warm our caf6 with Thy love And light it with Thy peace Forgive me all my worrying, And make my grumbling cease. Thou who didst love to give men food in room or by the sea Accept this service that I do, I do it unto THEE. Planning began in the 9th grade with fund- raising projects and continued through the 10th grade with maga- zine sales. This year found the juniors work- ing the concessions at the basketball games After three years of anticipation, and the excitement of planning the prom and seeing their dreams unfold, the unforgettable night came For most of the class and their guests there was a feeling of reluctance to see the night end.
