Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Joi-:N 8:32 NDIA A FEW days before India received full independence, a prominent Indian newspaper carried the headlines, 'Missionaries Need Not Quit India.' India was supposed to be FREE! India is not free, however. Jesus said, 'Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.' l have seen the Indian search for Truth. With the United States Army in India, l saw that heathenism is ghastly. l saw the Hindu holy man who had stared at the sun daily until he became totally blind. l saw another who had driven huge spikes through his limbs. l heard the soul- wrenching cry of a deserted child-mother, Tell me, do you think India is free? Missionaries write that today is the day of golden opportunity for the Church of Christ in India. This is our responsibility. They are bound and they cry, 'Give us Jesusl' What will you do? Among its four hundred million human souls, two hundred million have never been touched with the Gospel. These dark-skinned people are continually cry- ing out vainly to their many gods, seeking for heart rest, totally ignorant of God's plan of redemption which is the sole remedy for sin. It is impossible to fully realize lndia's degradation, the suffering of her child widows, her extreme fanati- cism, the moral filth of priests and temples, and the social crime of her caste system. However, through the force of politics, the caste of Untouchables has been recently outlawed. Surely the evangelization of this extremely difficult field presents a tremendous challenge to the Christian church. l3O
