Schluenzen. Her faithful service, unchanging spirit and unfeigned devotion to Christ has characterized her life and ministry on our campus for the past 45 years. In going forth, we carry with us the incessant memory of this one who has led us into a deeper appreciation of Christ and a more intimate knowledge of the Word as we have sat together at the feet of Jesus. lllllll WI PUWIH UP SHHNISS REV. A. B. SIMPSON A' SCORE of years ago a friend placed in my hand a little book which became one of the turning points of my life. It was 66True Peace. It was an old medieval message, and it had but one thought, and it was this, that God was waiting in the depth of my being to talk with me if I would only get still enough to hear Him. I thought that this would be a very easy matter. S0 I BEGAN T0 GET STILL. But I had no sooner commenced than a perfect pandemonium of voices reached my ears, a thousand clamoring notes from without and within, until I could hear nothing but their noise and din. Some of them were my own questions, some of them my own cares. some of them my own prayers. Others were the suggestions of the tempter and the voices of the world's turmoil. Never before did there seem so many things to be done, to be said, to he thought, in every direc- tion I was pulled and pushed and greeted with noisy acclamations and unspeakable unrest. IT SEEMED NECESSARY Fon ME TO LISTEN to some of them, but God said, '6Be still, and know that I am God. Then came the conflict of thoughts for the morrow, and its duties and cares, but God said, '6Be still. As 1 sLovvLY LEARNED T0 OBEY, and shut my ears to every sound, I found that after a while when the other voices ceased, or I ceased to hear them, there was a still small voice in the depth of my spirit. As 1 LISTENED it became to me the POWER OF PRAYER, and the VOICE OF w1sDoM, and the CALL OF DUTY, and I did not need to think so hard, or pray so hard, or trust so hard, but that still, small voice of the Holy Spirit in my heart WAS GOD,S PRAYER IN MY SECRET soUL and conis ANSWER to all my questions, 6 f i grit DDDDID!!Illllllllllilllllll gi DR. SSSEHIUHSQE -1 THREE wonderful and glorious years of prep- aration at the Missionary Training Institute have come and gone. As we face the fut- UFG-some to the mission fields, others to lW0me pastorates, and still others on to further training-we go forth knowing that He hath said, Be still, and know that l am God. lt is with a sense of our utter helplessness that we leave this Mount of Prayer and Bless- TQ, and we know that if success is to be ours We must depend wholly upon the power of the Holy Spirit. That l may know Him is our desire and determination as we go forth to tell the wonderful story to those who know it HOT. 23 CLASS OFFICERS ......, , President . . , Vice President DOUGLAS HERBERT . . , , ,Treasurer BETTY MCELDOWNEY . . . . . This divine art as it is being taught today in our educational institutions, whether Christian or secular, was born within the church, We ought to recap- ture this great instrument and use it to its greatest extent in the House of the Lord, seeking definite results in the winning of the lost and in the edification of the saints. Miss Geraldine Southern has directed the group from its infancy as it has ministered in song, not only to the student body, but also to church groups outside ot Nyack. Each Sun- day, men from all departments and classes join in this effort to win men to a saving knowledge of Christ. Several scores of souls have been saved this year and are being followed up by mail. The Nyack Youth for Christ has prospered and is financed in part by Nyack Christian businessmen. Anywhere within a fifty mile radius of M. T. l. the Fishers of Men are working feverishly to redeem the time. A ministry among the Jews in Newark and among the Spanish speaking peoples of New York City has been especially encouraging. 78 III IIII Spring Semester RALPH E. GODWIN EMERSON ACKERMAN. ,,.. . From our observations, it seems that Christian sports, mirror the Christian's life. An intense drive towards a coveted goal. A clean fight for a priceless prize, and beyond these, the calm still assurance that the battle is worthy. Few pictures could portray the spirit of Sports at Nyack better than the one on this page. The blessed period of stillness that seeks God before the happy boisterousness of battle on the playing field, is not put aside during the period of contest. lt's a joy to watch or play, Games and Sports the Christian way. 9l Seniors Mildred Rich lllc Crane Margaret Garrison Betty Jean Spittler Ruby Brown Ruth Walton Ruth wining Betty McEIdowney Betty Hucy ll I Freshmen Elinor Joell Elaine Laughter Ruth Armstrong Lula Langnecker Joyce Armstrong Marjorie Green Jeanne Murcell Lorraine Hartzell Helen Williamson . pw 92 4 1 4, gi -ra Juniors Jane Combs Jackie Gordon Betty Miner Eileen McEntarfcr Barbara Howland Ruth Hecker Dorothy Brcadcn Lois Chandler Jean Scott Joyce Murray Bettye Gattis , A 1 - ff :JL 5 H f o', s ff! ,I mf I V' 1 LA 'V am' . There are seventy million yet unreached with the gospel! The task is a difficult one. The tropical climate is a major offensive drive against the missionaries. The five hundred twenty three distinct languages and three hundred twenty dialects of the numerous races and tribes are tenacious toes which must be conquered to reach our dark skinned neighbors, the Berbers, the Aboriginese, the Arabs of North Africa, the Negroes in the great Sudan, and the Bantus in South Africa. Of every seventy-five persons in Africa, fifty are pagan and twenty-three are Mohammedans, while only two are Christians. The rays of the true gospel light have only begun to dawn, our plea is still, Lord, send reapers. 122 And when I waited for light, there came darkness. JOB 30:26 AFRICA TODAY the dense darkness of Africa's night is being dispelled as the Sun of Rlghteousness rises in the African sky! The rambling jungles of sorcery and witchcraft are being cut away by the Sword of the Spirit. When we see what the new day is bringing forth, oh, how we regret that Africa's night was so long! While the Church sat idly by, Islam made great advances, but faithful bands of consecrated Christian men and women have helped to mine these 'lively stones'. Graves have been filled by those whose lives have been expended in this industry of soul-winning, but the work is not yet finished. Scores of African villages are waiting to receive the Gospel of Light. How much longer they must wait depends upon you and me! Don't we often think of this land as one of oriental romance and mystery? Enclosed by the wes- tern mountain ranges, China is cradled alone, steeped in darkness with its superstitions, religions, and its own ori- ental customs which have remained with her through the centuries. Thus we find the country of the Great Wall is grounded in practices of religion which are directed by the Devil, Serpent ot the World, against whom we have girded ourselves with the Sword ot God's Word. New China is not accepting ancient religions. They have nothing to replace them unless we take them Christ. The natives killed a buffalo and smeared blood over the coffin using entrails to rub it on. Weeping, they muttered prayers to evil spirits. The box was lowered, rice and meat placed beside the grave. Trunks of trees and leafy branches covered the top. Over this projected a high mound of earth with a long bamboo pole, reaching down to the coffin. I could not sleep, so lay awake and I saw, and it seemed like this: l stood on a grassy sward. At my feet a precipice broke sheer-down into infinite space. I looked, but saw no bottom, only cloud shapes,'black, furiously coiled, and unfathomable depths. People were flowing from all quarters. All were stone blindp heading straight for the precipice. There were shrieks as they fell, and helpless arms clutching at empty air. Some fell without a sound. Then l wondered why no one stopped them. I could not. l was glued to the ground. I strained to call, only a whisper would come. l saw along the edge sentries at intervals, but there were wide, unguarded gaps between, and over these the blind fell, unwarned, and the green grass seemed blood-red, and the gulf yawned like the mouth of hell. A group of people under some trees sat with backs turned toward the gulf making daisy chains. Piercing shrieks cutting the quiet 'air disturbed them. They thought it a vulgar noise. If one started up to help, the others would pull that one down. Why get excited about it? Wait for a definite call. You haven't finished your daisy chains. lt would be selfish to leave us to finish the work. Once a girl stood waving the people back. Her mother called reminding her that her furlough was due and that she had to rest. No one was sent to guard her gap. Over the people fell, like a waterfall of souls. A child caught a tuft of grass that grew at the very brink of the gulf, it clung convulsively and called, but nobody heard. The roots gave way, with a cry the child went over, its little hands holding tight the torn-off bunch of grass. The girl who longed to be in her gap heard the little one cry, and wanted to go, but relatives reproved her, saying that the gap would be taken care of, and they sang a hymn. Through the hymn came another sound like the pain of a million broken hearts wrung out in one full drop, one sob, and a horror of great darkness was upon ME, for I knew what it was-the cry of blood. The Lord thundered, And l sought for a rnan that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap, but l found none. I lFrom Amy W. She steps forward, a pioneer country in the Twentieth Century. Despite her measure of success, however, we find almost 2,000,000 Moslems, Jews and Oriental Christians who do not know Christ as their Saviour. This proves to be a veritable Twentieth Century Ninevah which needs a multitude of obedient Jonahs to turn it to repentance. What can we do to combat these Moslem Gibral- tars as they stand in the path -ot our soul saving mes- sage? lt is our duty to pray, to give, and to go. l46 Brethren my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved. ROM. 10:1 N if Wk ,M Z ,, wa 1 0 'tl ,L EAR EAST DESTINATION, Haifa, gateway to a new Israel, a land of promise and of hope. Today there are one million Jews left on the continent of Europe, before the war there were six million. The Jews still living in Europe are the living dead-a modern drama of despair, The title, 'Promised Land,' is a paradox, but a greater paradox is the indifference of the Christian to their plight. Many of them have forsaken Judaism and have no religion. They do not know that Christ is their Messiah. The Near East is not only a 'bitter sea of tears,' but it is a bloody sea of tears. The events of the Near East point to the soon return of our Lord. We must occupy until He comes. Will you let. the challenge of the Arab and of the Jew go unheeded? Carest thou not that they perish? NEAR EAST Loading the caravan ln Khavaba. THE GIRL was lying face downward, unconscious on the cobblestones. A Christian passer-by helped her home and summoned the Missionary to EIenor's home. After two weeks elapsed, Elenor Matar expressed her desire for healing. She had been a drug addict to offset frequent violent convulsions. Christians prayed fervently that day until mid-afternoon when the Missionary demanded the demon to depart in Jesus' name. The victim shrieked, her body racked with pain. She fell to the floor screaming, Strength has gone out of me. Suddenly she jumped up and tried to praise the Lord. The demon sought desperately to enter a Saint of God who was praying. Clutching her arm the Christian moaned, Oh it feels like a knife through my arm! Twenty minutes of earnest prayer ensued before she was also delivered, Great was our joy for the freedom from the powers of darkness. M9 Wedding at close of conference in Ghusm. The secular and religious leadership has been degenerate, corrupt, and immoral, leaving these people in spiritual confusion and darkness. Many of them are illiterate, diseased, and morally degenerate. They live in continual dread of devils and witch doctors. But we have a glorious message! DEAD are they that have their souls dead and also still live. Eduardo Garcia was Roman Catholic. He fervently practiced the religion of his faith until he was seventeen, when he began to question these doctrines that failed to satisfy his soul. His poisoned, desperate soul sug- gested an exodus in suicide. lt was at this point that God intervened. Eduardo Garcia heard the gospel. Conviction so tenaciously accosted him that he literally shook as he inventoried his sins. As Eduardo con- fessed his sins a marvelous change transpired. He testifies, in place of weariness came rest, for fear- confidence, for confusion-peace, for darkness-light.
