Freshmen Blaze New Trolls John White cleans up as the Frosh herd Costa Mesa. As usual, the Freshmen football team did an outstanding job of representing MVHS on their level. Highlighting another great season was the 28-0 thrashing of cross district rival El Toro. The line, anchored by 202 pound Barry Baker provided protection for the speedy frosh backfield. The frosh jayvees also cannot be forgotten. Five members of the 1972 JV team were varsity stalwarts this past season. Caffa. ln what was for most of them, their second year of high school competition, the sophomore football team played like a well oiled unit. After a slow start losing their first two games, the tenth grade Diablos swept past their next six opponents. Included in this onslaught was a 38-22 rout of their former friends on arch rival EI Toro. Paced by Greg Jones, Mike Sweazy, Joe Blum, and Mitch Cheselka, this group of sophomores will give Mission a Varsity to be proud of. Early in the season, the Diablo Water Polo men found themselves in water above their heads, rarely surfacing long enough to take a breath of victory. Back to back losses to top rivals Laguna Beach and University sealed their fate out of the playoffs. With Kevin Whitelaw in goal and Cary Okazaki, Mike Bush, and Terry Murphy in tank, the Diablos were among the class of the 2A circuit.
