This year has been a series of surprises. First, President Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974, Gerald Ford succeeded as president and Nelson Rockefeller was appointed vice president. Congressional elections favored the Democrats while the Republicans preached honesty. Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger raised everyone's hope for world peace, but the wishes did not come true. Kissinger's missions in the Middle East went nowhere. Meanwhile, South Vietnam slowly lost territory to the Viet Cong. Congress tried to help consumers with price cuts, tax rebates, and suggestions of new economic policies. New sports swept the country. Skateboards rolled and clattered down sidewalks. Hang gliders provided soaring excitement for the daring. Surfing and skiing remained as popular as ever.
