Volleyers Spike Gut Growing pains were suffered by volleyball coach John Murio and his beleaguered sextet. Volleyball was a first year sport at Mission in 1975 and their inexperience showed against nationally ranked Laguna Beach in their April Fools Day opener at the gym. The Diablos were thrashed three times by identical 15-2 scores in that match. Opening game nerves plus the fact that MV was obviously overmatched contributed to the debacle. For years Coach Joe Reid had the unenviable task of taking a predominantly Freshman team into the Crestview League whose member schools only went down to tenth graders. ln 1975 Coach Reid was finally playing the games on even terms and had the results to show for it. The fresh-soph moundmen had one of their top seasons, at last were able to take on competition their own age in the newly formed South Coast League.
