Qfldifdvldzwfarmvzrrlanlly 'ff CONQUERING - AND STILL T0 CONQUER Fellow-Classmates, the Faculty, and Friends: Once again we commemorate a wartime graduation--this being the fourth one. As grad- uating pupils of the class of forty-five, we may think we have reached our final destination 'Ne have not--we have only begun.. Within a year this class will, without doubt, be scattered to all corners of the world. Some will be engaged in the service of their country, some in the business world, and others as homemakers. To neny this occasion may seem a joyous festival, but to me it is a sad parting. opportunity of all meeting together again. go with us. We, as a class, will probably never have the But wherever we may go, may success and honor As we go out into this new world, we will find many seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Our minds and hands must be burnished and skilled. Much will be expected of us, therefore, we must go forth with an increased determination to conquer. We are to be the leaders of tomorrow. Can we accept the challenge of that leadership? We must. In order to establish peace and preserve our democracy, we must be able to cope with all problems which confront us. Not only must we meet them, but we must solve them. To do this, we must all put forth a greater will to progress and to succeed. From all we have seen of this war, we can well acknowledge the fact that man is fast reaching the ultimate in harnessing the great forces of destruction. We has not, as yet, approached the ultimate in constructive effort, however. While the forces of destruction if X 7 X Z 4 , ., X p. 4' f Z 1 I ' are temporarily in their infancy, we under-estimate the positive forces at work in the world X 'N f .751 1 On the positive side is education, which in itself, is an important counterforce to destruc- gf? J tion. By its power-, we may prevent a recurrence of the tragic situation in which we now X - ' find ourselves. Education must be made into an effective creative instrument for the pur- Q ' pose of building a better society. We are aware, though, that education has failed to keep' V fag f step with the temzto of modern society because of the more frequent cloi stored attitude which y - has become increasingly dynamic. Q f v n-if AZ K One instance of this failure is exemplified by the fact that we have not developed i ' the talent of managing the growing industrial and governmental institutions. When we look Z. 6 to colleges for persons trained in administrative leadership, only a sn-,all percentage needed 6 are present. Such training is very essential and very necessary. More boys and girls must EZZWZE' 5 X f f be trained to direct and aid social ron-ress. TC- 4525735225 lhfslgumj 'f ytdwfgiy P 0 . Nifty! Kgaf' 52 , 24 2- lf' Fhilure to find sufficient leadership ability has handicapped the administration cf' :V the war. To reach the common objective of victory, all of our resources, Tvoth human and f y- natural, must be utilized. This requires expert and trained administrators. The lack of I Q these has forced both government and business to accept inferior workers. A27 iiiifhiiitfiif ' 2 .iw .it fi 424 4 ,,'i4iQi.sWa:il: ieswwwy X fl' Mr f'. W f dfwwhse f At this- point I will again state my question: Can we accept the challenge of being I .X the leaders of tomorrow? Perhaps the problem comes down to one of the ignorance of the ff educated man. One may be highly trained in one aspect and yet have a curious blindness about things outside his sphere of learnin . Even within the field in which he has studied 7 W ..,n.w.4yf .swims-nr . g .wx -f .ylu intensively, he may. be at a disadvantage in dealing with simplesituations. This is what W mg we must overcome. This is what we may conquer. We must face this new world with highly nf' QWESE ', alert minds, not overcrowded with one idea. We must be able to fill in the gaps which are X W' threatening to break apart the unity of ourdemocracy. We are entering an era in which international relationships will be so important that failure to understand the problems 'W X' and meet them capably may plunge us into another war. This must not happen. It is up to 1,1 each and everyone of us to prevent it. Our policy must produce tolerance, mutual under- fp, QZWEELZE standing, and a sense of responsibility for the general welfare.
