The Yearbook Staff hopes with all sincerity that you will enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed putting it out for you, the student body, faculty, and friends of Mission High School. Many hard worked hours, both in and out of school, have gone into the production of this journal. It has been a lot of work, but a lot of fun, as Well. I personally doubt if any one member of the staff will ever forget such things as our joumalism-yearbook picnic at Fairfax. To the seniors, this is your last Yearbook, the one book you will treasure for the rest of your lives. We hope that we have been able to include in it everything that you Wanted. We also hope that years from now, as you pause over these memorable pages of your MISSION 1960, it will bring back many memories of your alma mater, Mission High School. Now, I would like to start my many rounds of thanks. First, I would like to thank our printer and photographers. Without them, this yearbook would not be. Then, comes my wonderful staff for all of their complete cooperation, with a special thanks to my fall Co-Editor and Layout Manager, George Gooding, and Art Editor, Judy Larson, who also designed the cover of this journal. My grateful appreciation to the art staff for their many contributions. Even, to you, the students, go many thanks, for without a student body, again, there would be no yearbook. Last, but certainly not least, go my heartfelt thanks to Mrs. joan Bidwell, my advisor, who spent many long hours helping me. Also, to Mr. Louis Pacini, who later became our advisor, and Mrs. Dorothy Goodrich, the Art Advisor, thanks. Many years of success to you, Mission High School, the school witn the heart, and to all those who may pass through your mighty portals. I hope you will enjoy the MODERN BLACK AND WHITE MISSION 1960. Ellyn Wisherop Editor That was on April 1, 1936, a lucky day for me, stated Mrs. Allen. She substituted here occasion- ally and had hopes of teaching Mission students someday. As Mrs. Allen cultivates her hobbies Qsome trav- eling, studying, and growing African violets j now that she has retired from active teaching, many stu- DEDICATION It was last january that Mis- sion High School realized that it was losing an inspiration, part of its heart, to the world of retire- ment. MRS. MARGUERITE AL- LEN decided to retire from the teaching profession that she loves so much. Out of her 68 terms, all told, of teaching smiling faces, 24 years of faithful service were dedicated to Mission. Her first public school teach- ing experience in San Francisco began in Galileo High School where she taught for five years before she was appointed to her position at Mission High School. dents wish to pay her honor for being a loyal and faithful teacher in the fields of Gallagher Marsh, Thomas and Gregg shorthand, and family relations. To pay our tribute, We the students of Mission High School wish to dedicate this Spring 1960 Year- book to you - MRS. MARGUERITE ALLEN. Page 6 ADMINISTRA 7l0N DR. E. KEMP FREDERICK, PRINCIPAL This smiling person is the man who bears the brunt of Mission High School on his shoulders. When first looking at him, he certainly does not look like the five-day father to almost three thousand stu- dents. As you follow the head of the administrative triangle through an average day, you see his many changed expressions of the responsibilities and the pleasures of a guardian who is trying to guide his small percentage of future citizens to a greater America. isp:-areas-1 'WW f92 i3 I' , . 2E5?Q, .- S? .... .... ,. Together, Bob Barnett, President and Maxcine Belvin, Vice-President, have made a perfect team working to promote more activities and spirit, while leading the students toward a better Mission High School. The busy writers, Iuanita Tolyano, Recording Secretary, and Rita Montgomery, Corresponding Secretary, worked in harmony pro- ducing excellent correspondence with other schools and perfect student body minutes. Scholastically speaking, Bill Hystad, Scholastic Commission- er, did a great job of calculating grades. Our Financial Secretaries and Boys' Athletic Manager encour- aged many sales during the football season. Thanks are due to Pete Botto, Barbara Falconer, and Jack Barney. To end a terrific football season, which had lots of thrills and chills, was jerry Vetrano, Head Yell Leader, who led .is with good school spirit. All were under the advice of Mr. joseph Marchi, Activities Hifi? ' efag' Coordinator. ei'i' A i . ,ga 5 ,ii,' QT f 'f la: ,gg-tl I . ,I E If S yyp X X Q. vel . Although no score was rung up, Mission's Bears received their first taste of defeat. Galileo chewed up a little more yardage than the Bears and went on to win ..... Mission's Mighty Bears wound up the 1959 Prep Football Season with a not so mighty record of only one victory in eight games. Although Mission always played a hard game, giving all it had, it was missing that certain something it takes to win a ball game. That certain something? Who knows? We had the boys to win a ball game, Ken Sanderfer, All-City Tackle, and All-North State first string was one. Phil Caricciolo, made Second string All-City at Guard, along with eight other Bears who made All-City Honorable Mention. We had the Coaches: Dutch Elston, rated one of the best in the Bay Area was Head Coach, and he was ablely helped by Assistant Coaches Paul Olivier and Paul jalarvoi School support? We had that too. Mis- sion won one game and lost seven, putting them in last place. They were not outdone, by any means. Outstanding for the Mission cagers was All-City Ken Spargo, one of the top players in the league this year and Mission's best. Yes, we lost seven games and ended up in last place. But, as the old saying goes, It's not how you win the game, it's how you played the game. The Bears' strong center, Orlando Camp, rebounds raggedly against the Poly five. Coach Leith tells the boys, and if you win the game, I'11 give you a bag of potato chips. Tim Clark shoots for two against the Eagles. T. Bears got an egg CEagl+. eggsj dropped on them dur- ing this game. Chuck Vetrano and Ken Spargo get set to rebound against the Indians of Lowell. They were staffed with many talented ball play- ers and good coaching. The league was a tough one, and predominant Sacred Heart was the team to beat. Outstanding for Mission's Horsehiders were: john Courtade, Larry Herald, Ed Butticci, and sophomore Gary Radcliff. We won some and lost many. However, the outcome of the games showed our Bears fought to win each game. Desire and spirit were to be found on this club, but errors cost them. That's baseball. Q3 new That's Eddie Butticci. Real- ly, these are a couple of starters. Old Tom V happens to lead the J. V.'s in team bat- ting. The J. V.'s were a group with many tal- ented ball players. But, they were incon- sistent in the win column. They lost games they should have won. They were not bad ball playersg they were exception- ally good. Dave Payton, Dawson, Velas- quez brothers, and many others contributed their talents. We are sure with experience, and one or two full seasons to go, Mission's var- sity horsehiders of the future will prove outstanding as a team in the AAA. This is baseball!! During the past year the staff worked hard and earnestly to produce the greatest paper in the city. With the introduction of the new IBM Executive electric typewriter, which meant the students set their own type, the staff was able to produce six papers each term finstead of the previous fivej, larger type Ceasier on the eyesj, and a longer issue 117 inch- es instead of 15 inchesj. Thanks to the hard work of Mr. William McCluskey and his sales classes, financially the paper was a success too. With the departure of the advisor, Mrs. joan Bidwell Con a maternity leavej, the WEST WING was turned over to the capa- ble hands of Mr. Louis Pacini. Who will be holding the whip come fall, the staff will find out in September. 5' ' .
