zffisfofztl gif Mission High School, as a result of more tha11 fifty years of existence, has gained a place 1 in the lore of San Francisco. Construction was begun on the first Mis- sion building in the year 1897. The original structure, the cornerstone of which was laid by San Francisco Mayor James Phelan, was a three story brick affair, accommodating seven hun- dred students. Thus Mission appeared on the San Francisco scene. The solidly built building, though it withstood the 1906 earthquake and fire, was de- stroyed in 1922 by a disastrous fire. However, this city had not seen the last of Mission High School. In 1927, work was begun upon a new multi-million dollar edifice, which, upon its completion was to reinstitute the tradition of Mission High School. In the era which followed the rebuilding, Mission made great strides in enrollment, student achievement and general renown. Mission athletic teams gained state-wide fame. Graduates distinguished themselves in different fields. Thus, through many and varied efforts in the categories of academic, athletic, student and graduate achievement, Mission has become an important integral part of San Francisco. -dN srumm e icafion In recognition of outstanding service to Mis- sion High School, the journal staff dedicates THE MISSION, 1954 to Mr. Bernard Wiesiii- ger, coordinator of student body activities. During the past year at Mission, Mr. VVie- singer has contributed a great deal of time and energy toward-making the year a successful one in the field of student activities. His fine work on such projects as the carni- val, student body elections, the Healdsburg trip, rallies, the new constitution, assemblies, the Rooter's Club ad inhnitum, prompts the staff to nominate him as the man who has done the most for Mission high school during the 1955-54 school year. Nr. Wiesingers tenure at Mission has been marked with many achievements, among which were the excellent newspapers and yearbooks produced while he held the posi- tion of Journalism instructor. 1
