THE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE . .. In this war year, one is inclined to grieve over being obliged to endure hardship and privation, particularly if one is called into the armed forces. Yet, the situation, looked at calmly, is not bad. Happy is the nation, or household, whose annals are tire- some, but the price of happiness, on those terms is too high. It is a privi- lege to be living at a time when things are happening, when we never turn on the radio without the possi- bility of a repetition of the occurrence of two years ago when we heard of Pearl Harbor and the end of an era. An old recipe, and a good one, as far as it goes, says that a satisfactory quotient may be obtained as easily by decreasing the divisor, our needs and wishes, as by increasing the dividend, our possessions. Zero goes into the smallest conceivable number millions of times. Expect nothing, and you joseph B. Newman . . . twinkling eyes . , . spontaneous grin , . . silver-gray hair . . . thorough knowledge of many things . . . from Archimedes to Zoology . . . can go into any class . . . and take up where instructor leaves off . . . best friend of joe Mission . . . and Jane Mis- sion, too . . . interested in world and school affairs . . . poetry . . . Shakespeare . . . can quote 'em by the yard . . . is fluent in French , . . Spanish . . . German . . . overseas veteran of Wtirld War I . , . his courtesy . . . fairness . . . scholar- ship . . . administrative ability . . . com- mand admiration . . . from all, will not be disappointedg demand nothing of life, and you will be over- paid many times. Yet, that is the point of View of .1 coward, a slave. Our lives are not so valuable that we should guard them like precious jewels. Wlizlt if we do not attain our desires? I remember a poem, What I wanted as a boy, life has not granted me, but at least it has taught me that I was a fool to want it. Forty or Hfty years from now, looking back over the vicissitudes that mark almost every existence, you will have cause for gratitude that you lived, not in the dull days of peace, but during a time of danger, that you shared in the blood and sweat and tears of your race. Looking back into history, who would not rather live in the strenuous and uneasy periods than in those long ages without incident. PAGE NINE
