That Eerle F ecllng The stream went glldlng gently by me As rt slld along wlndlng ln and out lt seemed to be the most qulet most peaceful stream ln the world It dldn t babble lt dldn t tlnkle II Just went along wlthout the sllghtest murmur The only reason I knew If was movlng at all was because occaslonally a llttle plece of grass or a branch would go slowly 182115 by In places the trees that overhung were so close together that the sunllght was blocked and the tream seemed greenlsh In some places the lrght flltered through and dappled the green wlth brownlsh spots Where the sun could shlne on larger areas I could see the sandy bottom whlch gave the water a brownlsh yellow appearance There wasn t the sllghtest rlpple to catch the hlghllghts made by the sun ln fact the whole surface was glasslly smooth It was a sucky hot day so I was slttlng under one of the oaks on the bank try1ng to be refreshed by the shade What I really wanted was a swlm but I dldn t want to break that glassy surface II was Just too smooth And I d probably make a lot of nolse lfI swam I d break that qulet It was terrlbly qulet The whole world seemed to be hstenlng for somethlng waltlng suspensefully for somethlng or someone to make a nolse It only a rnrd would s1ng a fly 1:11144 the leaves shlver ID a breeze that would come from somewhere to cool everythlng off then thls awful spell would be broken and I could swlm Ah swlm If only a dog would bark a chlld laugh ln the dlstancc or a plane pass overhead for I had to cool o I took one look around me at the rows ol corn blue sky unbroken by clouds the oak trees the un dergrowth the mossy stones and flnally the stream That smooth unbroken stream wlth lts stealthy flow creeplng along sllently was my trlal my tempta tlon the Dev1l ltself Suddenly an lnsplratlon came to me Throw ln a pebble flrst break the spell and then you ll be able to splash all you want So I selzed a pebble and ll plopped as II hlt the water and sank slowly to the sand It was then that dlsquletlng feellng came to me lhave done Eh1S before I had broken the qulet before and seen the pebble slnklng to the sand before I had seen the rlpples spreadlng from the plopplng place to the shore before And yet I had never spent the summer ln the country before I had never spent a summer ln the country ln England be fore and whlle IH England thls was the flrst tlme that I had seen that stream And that qulet one would never forget a qulet llke that and I had never not heard any nolse before There had always been SOMETHING Hadn t there?
