CLASS PROPHECY Well, it's just a few minutes past twelve o'clock. January I, I969. Yes, a new year has begun! How nice it is to think back over all the years I have been traveling and all the people I have met. But, as I think back, I begin to wonder what has happened to all the friends and classmates l went to school with. To find out, I will pay a visit to my sister KAYE SMITH, now married to Ray Record with five little Records of her own. She and Ray make thier home in Michigantown. I arrived in Michigantown. the next day about ll:30 P.M. Kaye and Ray met me at the airfield. They drove me to their home. The next day I did nothing but question Kaye, and she told me that most of the kids were still around Michiangtown although a few had left. That evening we sat down to watch tele- vision. The most delightful program, Private Secretary, came on. The surprise was in the casting. Our own SHIRLEY AVERY playing the part of the secretary! Just before the show was over the television went on the blink. Kaye hurried to the phone and called the re- pairman. My first impression as he walked in the door was of iust a good looking middle aged man. But then I had to laugh, it was RICHARD COHEE. We began talking, and he told me he wasn't married yet but was waiting for VIRGINIA LEE CANTER to set the date. He had waited only ten years already. he said Gin was now an elemenatry teacher right here in Michigantown. I decided. the next morning, to go see Ginny. I walked over to the school. It was still the same old one'we had in '54. I found Gin talking to a rather elderly lady. It turned out to be MRS. MIRIAM SENGER, now supervisor of the English Depts. of all schools. School let out at ll:0O that day, so Gin and I went out for a bite to eat. Uptown she took me to a very quaint Tea Shop. The inside was done beautifully The waiter told me thatCARL HARRIS,the owner, had done it all himself. I never thought this of Carl. Gin then decided to take me out and show me the contryside. First, we stop- ped at a small filling station at the edge of town. Yes, lust as I thought! GORDON MAISH came out to see what we needed. We then left for Beard. I was really surprised to see how this place had grown. They told me REX CRUM had built this town. It seems he had grown tired of small towns so he built a city of his own. I wanted to see Rex, and when behind me I heard someone say, Hi vere , I knew I'd get to see him. We then left Beard and headed around to Avery. I remembered this town'well, but it sure had changed! Gin asked me if I would like to meet the Mayor. Naturally I considered this an hon- or. While waiting to get into the mayor's office, a slim attractive girl walked through the office checking a list of figures. It was Nancy Fearnow. It used to be NANCY WILSON. We finally got in to see the mayor. And sitting there with his feet on the desk and eating an ice cream barwas MAX SHEETS. Was this a surprise! Max told me our old classmate, JOE MASON, now held one of the highest positions in the world, window washer of the Empire State Building. On our way back to M'town we were talking and didn't notice the car in front of us. We bumped into the back of it. Gin and I got out to see what damage was done. The driver of the other car didn't seem to be mad when he got out of his car. I had to look twice, it was KENNY EADS! He asked us to take a short ride with him. He is still a bachelor, I learned. He always said he'd never get married As we drove along we passed a huge farm. It belonged to Gordon and Donna Walker, the former DONNA FAYE PERREL. It seemed that Donna did all the farming because her husband had a business of his own. As we went on, we passed an immense dairy farm. This be- longed to PHYLLIS and Howard Peter. It was getting late so we went back to M'town. Gin had to meet her new chemistry teacher, BILL KIRKPATRICK. Kenny dropped me at the new Schlossers' plant in town. I notice that BILL HARVEY is the manager. He sure came up in that Business. The kids were watching a game on television between Beard and Wanderville. The sports announcer was very captivating and familiar- yes, it was RELDO RIDENOUR! He was introducing his guest for the evening, MR. RULE, a retired coach. The next day I went out to see LAURA JEAN PERREL She owned a big night club on the outskirts of town. I arrived iust as rehersal was starting. NEIL PERREL. now Amer- ica' sNo. I Singer, was singing his song. After rehersal I drove Neil back to the Motel where he was staying. The sign out front said FRIENDLY PETES. DON PETERSON met us at the gate. He is now married and has all six of his kids working for him. On my drive back to town, I noticed the driver in the car next to mine. It was DONNIE EVANS. He stopped and talked to me for a second. He was home on vacation from New York. where he works with Joe Mason. 'lt seems that Donnie washes out the window brushes while Joe washes the windows. That evening we had company. SARAH NEWELL and her husband, Ralph Webb, dropped in. They run a small sewing schoolwhich does quite well. Well, it' slate so I had better go to bed. I have'to go back to California tomorrow. I am leaving on a plane for Paris in a few days. I hope I willcget to return in the very near future and see how things have changed. During the ri e home, the pilot came forward to see how things were. To my surprise it was DAVID NEWHART. His flying around Michigantown in is car sure was good practice for his career. KAREN SMITH -
