B g Sh I only ght grades oo is HER SCHOOLS COST THE TAXPAYERS OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR IN 1834 the first school was financed by donations from the citizens. These subscription schools were replaced in 1852 by a tax supported system. Since then the system has grown to nine schools with an enrollment of 5,201 students. For the school year 1949-50 the operating cost was 331,084,427.63 or 5260.15 for each high school student.
