Defensive tackles Steve Burns and Bob Whitaker along with Dave Fau- chald sack the Palos Verdes quarterback for a big loss. Scott Sanders views the game from an awkward position as Bob Whit- aker and Dave Fauchald pursue in the offensive backfield. f The l97l Miraleste Football team linished their best season since opening four years ago, compiling an ll-l win-loss record. Also included were post season victories and the CIF playoffs. The season started off as the Marauders demolished Rolling Hills and Palos Verdes, winning the King of the Hill Award. Following these defensive dis- plays, the Marauders faced Morningside- the result was another victory leading them to Glendale. The Dynos fell next, giving Miraleste a perfect record to enter an always tough league season. But this year the story was not the same, and the Marauders easily handled Daniel Murphy and El Segundo, preparing for a showdown with Lennox. The Marauders were victorious, after having the Lancers tie the score with only 52 seconds remaining. Confidence prevailed, as on the first play after, quarterback Steve Doran hit Kevin Butler for a 40 yard pass play. Larry Hoover imme- diately followed with a 20 yard touchdown pass again to Butler to give the Marauders a clutch win. Homecoming was the site of the next victory, as Lawndale bowed also, followed by Saint Monica. After their perfect regular sea- son play, they entered the post season CIF playoffs. The first CIF victory in football came as the Marauders upended South Pasadena in a night game. They boasted a strong de- fense, combined with a potent offense, and readied for their next opponent, North Riverside. The story was the same, as the Marauders ended up on top, allowing only a field goal. The Marauders now travelled to Cerritos College where they faced St. John Bosco. The story was different, as the Marauders led until the final seconds of the half. They never regained the lead, and lost to the finals-bound team, 2l-l2. All CIF awards were given to Steve Burns, Tom Papadakis, and Dave Tenn. Dave Tenn was also named Pioneer League Back-Player of the year, and named as Honorable mention- All American, Coach Lucas was named to coach the East team in the East-West Shrine game, to end the season on a good note.
